This makes no sense. The pink hover board in the movie was made by Mattel for little kids. This douche bag looks like he would be in a commercial for a Pit Bull or one of the other gang member's boards. Jesus, Universal, get your own film's branding right. You released this to create nostalgia with your core audience but, from the looks of every comment thread where this video is posted, you have effectively pissed them off.

+Jeremy Sandlin I'm a huge BTTF fan. I immediately noticed that the commercial looks to be aimed at teens and yet is selling the little-girl-branded hoverboard.
And yet, it did not tick me off. I liked the commercial, despite the issue.
And I suspect there are many other fans like me who've seen the commercial, noticed the issue, and still enjoyed it. But, sadly, enjoying something is less likely to motivate people to comment on the internet than not enjoying something. So, you can't really look at internet comments and say with any confidence that the video has effectively hacked off the BttF core audience.
+Nic Weymouth You make a good point. I agree that comments online can be generally skewed negative. I also agree that not all BTTF fans will be completely turned off by this ad. I can only speak to the reasons why I personally dislike this ad, and there are some very specific reasons. The primary reason I dislike this ad is because I find it incredibly lazy.
One of the things that I love about the films is the amount of detail that is packed into almost every frame and the kind of continuity that only a truly passionate film maker can bring to a project. It's the kind of film that I can still learn something new about even after watching it for 30 years now. There are so many clever references packed into the front page of the newspaper from BTTF2 alone that you would never see unless you were to freeze fame and actually read the rest of the paper. It didn't need to be there but it is and it's amazing. I would describe this as incredible craftsmanship. This ad however, basically spits in the face of that craftsmanship.
Normally, I wouldn't comment or say anything. Everyone has a right to be creative and put their own spin on established concepts. But, this is different. This was posted by the film's distributer which means it directly reflects the BTTF brand. And they got it so wrong. I have worked at an ad agency long enough to have a fairly good idea what the conversation may have looked like that produced this video. "Universal needs to push 30th anniversary Back to the Future blu-ray sales." "Let's do a hoverboard commercial, something nostalgic, something shareable, no brainer." "Great, we need it in two weeks for it to tie into our other marketing efforts" "Two weeks? Sure, we can put it together... I know a guy in LA that has replicas of the hat, shoes, hoverboard. We'll need to take the Mattel logo off though because we don't have licensing rights."
Then, they shot a 90's, teen, X Games skateboard commercial on their roof with the props and called it good. Lazy. And all they really needed to do to fix this was use a Pit Bull prop instead of the Mattel Hoverboard.

But, really, it's not about it being wrong, things in sci-fi franchises wind up being wrong at some level all the time and the fans kind of enjoy finding those things: it's about the fact that either no thought was put into this, or the thought that WAS put into this was "the audience is stupid and they won't care."

I did thumbs up one of them,.. I also would have liked to see the pit bull as if it was a new product,. the hover boards in the movie seemed to have been a common thing and around a while,.. but the pit bull seemed to just have launched.

It didn't have the Mattel company logo. The hot pink color scheme was meant for kids, the cooler designs were the paint designs for older people.

My theory is this was a prototype ad from a small company that was sold to Mattel, who then later added a handlebar and rebranded it for kids.

this should have been a commercial for a kids scooter. in BTTF2 this was a girl's scooter with a handlebar, and would have never been marketed as it is in this "ad". universal fails.

Maybe in the idealised future 2015 of the Back To The Future series, little girls can ride pink hover-boards and dream about owning a more powerful pit bull board; while skater dudes can ride pink hover-boards made by Mattel and be totally okay with it, because it's not about the colour it's about the skating and they don't want the added power of a pit bull, they want to do tricks and get air from their own skills not some jet pack. Maybe in the film version of 2015 people don't find it horrifying that a guy could advertise a product that's brightly coloured or even ~shock horror~ pink. Maybe it matches his sick shirt. Maybe the colour and the brand of the board don't detract from how cool it is to levitate above the ground. But maybe assuming that in the year 2015 guys would stop caring about whether a product was "manly" enough for them to use it, was actually the most unrealistic thing about the film version of 2015. (This commercial being a part of that film version).
They do know that the pink Mattel Hover Board in the movie was for children, right? The ones Biff and his gang had were presumably the teenage/adult ones.

Now, in case anyone wants the backstory of the entire Back to the Future trilogy rereleasing on the 21st of October this year, here it is; After I went to see Shaun the Sheep Movie, a thought came to mind; As you all know, the year we now live in is 2015, and I thought it was a great year for Universal to rerelease the BttF trilogy! So I e-mailed Cineplex to see if they'll actually do it, and they said yes! To my surprise, I didn't think it would be such a catch of action, but it'll be October 21st on Wednesday, and to my knowledge, it'll only be in theaters in Canada. And if Universal actually is making a Jaws 19, I'll be surprised. That, and it showing at a Holomax theater, made specifically for Jaws 19.
In short, I'm responsible for all of this.
