      Coal Mine Gaming
You should believe who ever is makes more sense and has an argument with merit behind it..
Theyre design has flaws that no ammount of engineering wizardry is going to solve.
      Copper floors arent cheap.
      Electromagnetic impulse controls arent cheap.
Lithium ion batteries strong enough and lomg lasting enough to make something like this work is a sci fi wet dream.
Figuring out how all this plays into balancing just isnt going to happen.
      Plain and simple.
On the otherhand you have more tried and true concepts like the hovercraft and low flight aircraft that have the potential to work fine if scaled down.
With working models of hovering motorcycles that can go around 40 miles an hour.
And jet proppelled surf boards that are surprisingly stable, it would seem then the mire practical route is further study of fluid dynamics and figuring out the right design for an air board.
Does compressed air solve balancing issues?
Most likely No because its always going to be a flying panel with functionally no leverage besides its source of propulsion.
This problem would only be worse for a magnet system since you cant predict anything its just like sitting on a frictionless surface and expecting to have control.
At least with air power your shifting weight can shift the direction of propulsion to correspond to it.
It is ,also more practical than copper layered skate parks that oxidize the moment they sit in the environment.
And by far more energy efficient than electro magnets the very application of which, requires that one increase the electrical resistance to ludicrous amounts before ever reaching any tangibe fliating effect.

They are a design flaw, and they cannot be fixed by any types of plastic surgery? Am I close?

Term Go ahead. Call me a clown if it makes you feel better. But unfortunately, there is no getting around the need for the expensive metal base. And due to the limitations of magnetic fields, it's not going to hover much higher either, they might bring it up to .02!
So, even at the furthest of development, this could be at best a theme park attraction. A lame, gimmicky, sideshow attraction. It's not the hoverboard the people want.. But there could be other applications for this tech.

That got me thinking, are there hoverboards big enough for 40-year-old adults to ride on? And what are the weight limits on those things? There should be one wide enough and heavy duty enough for Santa Claus himself to ride around on to give his reindeer arrest for the big night and when he’s making local appearances! Where here in Sacramento California could I find a hover board?

Every century following, there were new discoveries leading to the electric motor and AC power electrical grid. This propelled mankind into a modern era. I’m sure in 200-300 years we will all have magical antigravity technology. The 1900’s and 2000’s will look like exactly how we look at 1600 & 1700’s now.
