- As a high schooler in the public-housing projects of Richmond, Virginia’s East End, Monte Cosby felt his future was limited-until mountain bikes offered him a different route forward. In the years since the bike has served as the bridge between two different worlds and a vehicle to overcome the struggles along the way.

About Patagonia:
At Patagonia, we appreciate that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. We’re using the resources we have-our business, our investments, our voice and our imaginations-to do something about it.
We are so proud to be part of Monte's story! 🙌

I cried the good cry 🥹. Seeing my part of town in this kinda forum is so surreal. Thanks to The Forge for seeing BIG potential in small places 🔎
Our city’s poorest hoods are in very close proximity to our James River Park System that cuts right through the middle of town. I lived 2 blocks from the river for 30 years & didn’t know all these outdoor sports existed for us. This is all so sorely needed. 🙏🏽
I absolutely LOVED this. The outdoors and the sports associated with outdoors are foreign to the average Black person because of lack of exposure. I learned to swim at 36, did my first solo camping trip and started mountain biking at 44 and now Onewheeling at 45, Because im exposing myself to new things. So i love that monte is being that exposure to other people who look like us ❤

Monte, I am so proud of you young King. Keep motivating, thriving, and inspiring us All. Love you 😍 🥺😘
Killer story! Love to see more of what Monte does in the outdoor industry!
Monte’s story transcends race just like biking transcends race. What a story for all of us. We all deal with “stuff”, and biking refines us. Even though our transformation stories may not be as dramatic as his, we are all a brotherhood whose lives are enhanced and improved through cycling. What a beautiful video.
Hear hear
This is beautiful - love for cycling is boundless and to see Monte find his way through the discipline of bicicyles...... im bawling.
Righteous. I'd ride with Monte any day.
Being a black military bratt growing up in Germany l started cycling at age 8 driving at nine. In the 70s we would strike oit on bike and travel to other countries diring the summers. There are Autobahn s and next to that are bike trails and next to that are walking trailsall through out Germany. Hunting fishing hiking all vame with the many different young men I hung around. I am 64 years young and still bike, kayak, camp.
🎉
Fantastic vid. Ride on, Monte, ride on!
A purely awesome and awakening documentary... Thanks Patagonia. And thanks Monte for sharing your story. Keep riding, my friend. You've a fan in CO!
Good on you Monte. Biking changed my life. I appreciate your effort to show others because its a great time/experience. Cheers bro
This is an amazing story!. Matt Kuhn has done amazing things with the kids in Richmond and Monte is proof of this. Monte you have learned so much and I so proud of the journey you have taken - you will be such a great inspiration for other youth in RVA and wherever you are. Keep your dream of helping others see the rest of the world.
Awesome documentary, Monte is a cool dude. Keep riding my friend 👊
This was an awesome story! I wish nothing but the best for Monte. I can speak from experience that it's hard to do what he's doing, and he's 100% correct in everything he said. OMG, I can't write how I feel after hearing Monte. He said everything I've always felt and wanted to say. He convicted me and reminded me of some of my biggest mistakes. I used to BMX when was young, but I sold out to the peer pressure of not falling in line with "black people" sports. Don't get me wrong, I love basketball, but that was never me. One long story and a lot of shattered pieces later, I'm back in the woods on a mountain bike. I'm back to working on my car. Thank you so much for this story. You have know idea how encouraging this was for me.
Bro, glad to hear you're back doing what you love. Haters love to be loud and obnoxious, but ignore them and do what sparks joy!
Good on you, man.
Good on you, man.
Beautiful all the way around. Keep shining Monte!
Ride on Monte! Nice work!
I am a 54 year old white msn from NYC who had allll the opportunity. It is so moving to hear how just peddling a few miles away from one’s neighborhood makes a difference. It really really does. No matter who you are… getting out there and just exerting for a while and soaking in where we have taken ourselves….
Truly beautiful story! Mountain biking is a life changing experience!! All the best to you Monte there no limits to life!
This is a great documentary on what getting outdoors and in nature can do for someone. Now if the rest of the social media obsessed generation could learn that we'd get somewhere.
Jesus Christ?
YEAH RIGHT. LOG OFF FIRST. AND STEP OUTSIDE THE FRONT DOOR. AND WALK.
Thanks JC.

Social media isn't a generational problem, it's a societal problem.
Thanks Patagonia and Monte for making me choke up during breakfast on a Monday morning. What you’re doing is powerful, Monte! Never relent!
This is one of the best Patagonia films EVER. So inspiring!
So proud of you! Don't stop!
I really got into cycling in high school and college back in 1984. It was motivating to be around good cyclists at Chico State and I became a better rider way back then. ✌
LOVE this story! You're doing great things Monte! Hit us up if you ever want to be a mountain bike guide! We need more bright, talented young individuals like you to help get more kids on bikes.
i luv this kid
Great story!!! Who produced and filmed this?!? I want to check out more of their work!!!
Such a sweet kid and family. Awesome work on this. Just goes to show what finding a hobby or a passion can do for someone. Life's tough, we all need an escape that makes us happy.
This is so awesome!!!
This is awesome!
The morning feeling of the fresh breeze and the smell of the nature when spending time in there its unpayable ❤️
This was so inspiring! Thank you!!!!
Мне 32. Смотрю тебя из России. Удивительно, как простое механическое средство передвижения делает людей по всему миру единомышленниками. Душевное видео, спасибо тебе брат🙏
🎉
Well done Monte!
Beautiful 👏🏽🙏🏽
Way to go, Monte!!!
Monte is a legend
Keep pushing lil cuz, I love you❗️🫶🏿😘
Great video. Keep riding my young brother.
Heck YEAH!🔥❤️👍
Nice story! Cycling does help indeed...
DONT YOU NEVER STOP KEEP LIVING YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST ENJOY EVER MIN OF IT
I hope in the future there's more programs that can make things like cycling more accessible for low income people. Cycling is a great activity that has improved my life in numerous ways but it is prohibitively expensive for far too many people. I help coach the local NICA team in Abingdon Virginia and we have some great ambitious riders that are sometimes held back by their equipment. I've also noticed being an outdoor enthusiast my whole life how much its like 95% white people in outdoor spaces, not only are a lot of outdoor activities expensive to get into but I think there's a multifaceted stigma of POC in outdoor spaces, idk how to fix it but I really hope to see more diversity in outdoor spaces as time goes on because nature should be for everyone to enjoy and i think everyone can find healing and peace among the trees.

I'm always wondering why there's no black riders in Tour de France. In the meantime, black runners are so successful in both short and long runs on the track. We need more black pro riders. BTW, I'd recommend wearing knee/elbow pads when MTBing. Knees are delicate, prone to injury.
Which jacket is Monte wearing ?
I see u nephew ❤🫡
