I feel like the fact that this is inaccessible through normal means is an intentional part of the story. To get to this Pink Forest, you have to go beyond the fabric of reality, dig deep into the rom and "pillage the carcass" of it. ( 1:07 ) The fact that this dialogue exists here, seems like the creator knew that you would have to rip open the rom in order to access any of it. Does it not seem fitting, then, that you would witness things that were never meant to be seen? An abyss within the abyss, that grows ever deeper... Thank you Annoying Elf for documenting this!

Actually it would be referring to the alternate text box of that same ending saying: "My lungs hurt. Please take them out." Since the other one actually said: "My throat is all closed up. Won't you cut it open for me?"
Y'know, I think that dialogue in the Flaming Forest/Black Forest is actually referring to the Peach demon that we see here. "Its shadow towered in the light, horns larger than its head, sounds that weren't from this time. What a staggering sight."
That description is something straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft novel, and seeing Demon Peach (The Forest King) really fits the description of a Lovecraftian entity.

The more i look back at this 3 years later, the more i realize this unfinished level makes the _finished_ parts of the game look like a simple walk in the park.
So presumably, the beginning is the first forest. Evade Ghost Peach and you enter the dark, but get caught, you head to the cellar. From the cellar, you can access the death, where you find Mario's ghost, and the rage, where a beast burns down the forest. From the rage, you can access the heart- the unnamed level represented by journal entry from 1992. From the dark, you access the memory, where you play as Peach- and from the memory, the mistake, where you build a house.
I just had a slight 'eureka!' moment about this hack (someone else may have already shared this idea....my apologies if this is a repost). The 'pink forest' may actually be deliberately hidden. If we think about it, one of the common themes throughout this hack is dismemberment/disembowlment. In order to get to this level, along with some of the other secrets, the ROM has to be decompiled - i.e., you have to 'dismember/disembowel' the game just to get to them. That's actually pretty brilliant, if that's the intention.
brickfighter 14 I feel the same way, I grew up with Super Mario World, Love The Game, But for some reason I always felt there was something dark & Eerie about It, & there was something more to It.. But Jus never found It.. The Game Has a Good Design, There's Jus so much you can do with It!
I grew up with SMW and dont find these that scary. Yeah, theyre unsettling but the jump noise is what takes me out of it. Edit: I will say that ‘the is pretty scary because you have to piece together alot of the “story”. Too many games just shove story down your throat like youre a toddler.
I really think the anagram tells the original story of this hack. Mario and Peach decided to move into this forest for a nice vacation. However, because of the bloodshed and casualities Mario caused during his rescue of Peach, a large amount of vengeful spirits is produced, and gathered in the forest. Over time, Mario is gradually being influenced by their emotion. When Peach made a small mistake one day, Mario became enraged, killed Peach, and thrown her body down the cliff (as Peach is forced to walk off the cliff. The vengeful spirits influenced Mario to do this because Peach, although unintentially, is the reason why they suffered in the first place). After realising what he had done, Mario killed himself in remorse (hence the corpse in the cabin). The crawl, cellar and death in the anagram shows how Peach and Mario have died, and the dark is the feeling of Mario after his action, and his eventual suicide. The beginning is the start of the game event, as it is Mario's journey through the hell that was formed by his memory, caused by a mistake commited under a blind rage. The blood and corpses shown in the beginning are actually belongs to the koopa army and some original residents who was killed by Mario during his rescue, and thus became the vengeful spirit (along with Peach after her death at Mario's hand). The disembodied voice is from these spirits (mostly Peach), who continued to haunt Mario even after his death.
@@junetta_aep_breaccglas I've seen that theory before, and it was actually a better explanation than mine, because it explains the part where Peach fell through the bridge. But what I was confused is that according to Peach's personality, just that is not enough for her to be THAT furious at Mario (to haunt him eternally in his dream), plus it could be simply an accident. If that theory is correct, I think the spirit in the forest influenced the spirit of Peach, so she is as vengeful as them as well.
Midori Yakumo I think the implication is that Peach is mad at Mario because he built the bridge the collapsed under her and lead to her drowning. It showed Mario building the cabin, so I wouldn’t think it would be a stretch to say he built a rope bridge or two

If one were to take the theory that Mario is wandering in some form of Hell, and add the "ROT" part into all that: Maybe the hack's basically telling Mario to rot in Hell, presumably for the crimes that he'd committed.

I think it could be dialouge from the first "birth" of this forest entity. Then it symbolizes its "rebirth" of it being in the demonic Peach form. It was born once, now it was born again, but neither time was it natural.

Hey I was able to make another discovery on the hack! It should be on my channel, but I ran the track that shows up at the "Again?" screen under a visualizer and its not static, but a message! It reads "Start anew where the light vanishes" I'll have to look into this further.

@@rivet6403 Hey I'm late on this but STAR is going to be a very common string in a lot of hacks because patches tend to insert what's called a RATS tag into the rom. This is to prevent the patch from being overwritten by other patches in the future. RATS tags contain the word STAR as an indicator that they are in fact a tag so naturally you'll see a lot of STAR in most roms. Hope I could help clear that up!
Nice, was none of this posted in the original thread for the hack om SMWcentral? I remember giving it a read, and the creators giving hints to fully explore the hack, but I don't remember anyone mentioning these things.
The pink forest isnt canonical, the devs outright stated it was scrapped because it was way too upfront and just straight up told you the forest king is a demon possesing peach (and also that it either has a gore and masochism fetish, or that the possession induced it in peach) . Essentially, they thought that the pink forest stole away all of the mystery, so they removed it.
I doubt that's actually the case. Lots of stuff in the game can only be seen and pieced together by using Lunar Magic to remove sprite layers, so it makes sense that this something that can only been seen by manipulating the game given that the creators already expected you to do that to get lore anyway.
I don't know how to change the Rom's header properly. I got close once but Lunar Magic said something along the lines of me not being allowed to see the levels.
Sbes for anyone wondering, you can lock your hacks from being edited. It’s an easter egg feature of Lunar Magic. To get around this you have to use RLM, Recover Lunar Magic, to fix it.

You can get there if you use some camera pan tricks. There’s a drop just like after the corrupted forest, but you drop onto mario from the cabin.

Maybe this was supposed to either be the end or be part of what took the player to the end
...so this is what the tiny doors in the black room led to...
The pink forest isnt canonical, the devs outright stated it was scrapped because it was way too upfront and just straight up told you the forest king is a demon possesing peach (and also that it either has a gore and masochism fetish, or that the possession induced it in peach) . Essentially, they thought that the pink forest stole away all of the mystery, so they removed it.

looked back at the smwc forum posts and outside of "you weren't meant to find it" and "it's unfinished" I can't find any mention of what you said
I doubt that's actually the case. Lots of stuff in the game can only be seen and pieced together by using Lunar Magic to remove sprite layers, so it makes sense that this something that can only been seen by manipulating the game given that the creators already expected you to do that to get lore anyway.
i think It IS finished but it was supposed to be an Easter egg for clever people that know how to screw around with the rom :)

You have to switch the level value in Lunar Magic until you find the right one.
I don't know how to change the Rom's header properly. I got close once but Lunar Magic said something along the lines of me not being allowed to see the levels.
Sbes for anyone wondering, you can lock your hacks from being edited. It’s an easter egg feature of Lunar Magic. To get around this you have to use RLM, Recover Lunar Magic, to fix it.

it's been a while, but if i remember correctly, you have to change the rom's header from coronation day back to the super mario world one
