1. Origins: The Kanheri Caves were excavated and inhabited by Buddhist monks during different periods, starting around the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. They served as a major center for Buddhist learning, meditation, and religious activities.
2. Hinayana and Mahayana Buddhism: The caves were initially associated with Hinayana or Theravada Buddhism, which emphasizes the teachings of the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. Later, during the 3rd century CE, they came under the influence of Mahayana Buddhism, which incorporates additional teachings and a greater focus on compassion.
3. Monastic Complex: The complex consists of a series of rock-cut caves, totaling over a hundred in number, and they vary in size and design. These caves served as viharas (monasteries) for the monks to reside in and chaityas (prayer halls) for communal worship.
4. Architecture and Art: The Kanheri Caves showcase excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and ancient Buddhist art. The caves feature intricate carvings, sculptures, and inscriptions on the walls and ceilings, depicting various Buddhist deities, stories from the life of Buddha, and Jataka tales (stories of Buddha's previous lives).
5. Water Management: The site also exhibits an advanced system of water management, with numerous cisterns, channels, and reservoirs carved into the rock to collect and store rainwater for the monastic community.
6. Trade and Connectivity: Kanheri Caves had a vital role in facilitating trade and cultural exchange between the ancient kingdoms of India and foreign regions like Persia and Rome. The caves were located on an ancient trade route, and visiting merchants and pilgrims would have left their mark on the site.
7. Decline: The prominence of Kanheri Caves gradually diminished after the decline of Buddhism in India and the growth of other religious practices. By the 10th century CE, the caves were largely abandoned, and their significance declined over time.
Today, the Kanheri Caves are a popular tourist destination, attracting history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and people seeking spiritual insights. The caves offer a serene environment, surrounded by nature, and are a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of ancient India and the influence of Buddhism in the region.

I have visited Borivili National park in May 1986. RECENTLY even Leopards have been sighted in this area. I have heard of Kanheri Cves but never had a chance to visit them. Mumbai city and Suburbs also have Heavy Rainfall during South West Monsoon. SUDDENLY there will be very heavy rainfall and then there may be some clear weather for some time. Waterfalls inside Kanheri Caves are indeed awesome. in Chennai we have rains during North East Monsoon. Fully loved and enjoyed this Digital travel with you. Ajay Take care.

Since you are showing viewers many facets of Maharashtra it would be worthwhile showing them the famous Karla Caves also. Situated about 2 or 3 kms from Malavli station on CR. This station is next to Lonavla when coming from Mumbai to Pune. Only local trains will stop here, not other trains. Buddhist Era prayer hall and interesting caves. Also try to show the Baneswar temple near Pune. Only a bus journey from Pune city.

Deeply nestled among the tranquil surroundings of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali in Mumbai, are more than 100 Buddhist caves popularly known as the Kanheri Caves. Kanheri, known as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri in ancient inscription, literally means black mountain (Krishna means black and giri is mountain) and is mostly named after its black basaltic stone. Spanning from the 1st century BC to 11th century AD, an era that saw the rise and decline of Buddhism, these caves present an insight into its evolution and also have the distinction of having the largest number of cave excavations from a single hill.
The earliest cave constructions coincide with the arrival of Buddhism in Anathara, Sopara.
Most of these caves are simple single or multiple-cell viharas, or monasteries, devoid of any decorations and meant for simple living, studying and meditating.
Chaityagraha serves the purpose of worship halls.
A colossal Buddha and Chaityagraha in Cave 3, a large Avalokiteshvara (Bodhisattva who represents compassion) in Cave 2, a painted ceiling in Cave 34 and an evolved water management system (indicated by the presence of water cisterns in almost every cave and huge water tanks) are a few of the highlights at the Kanheri Caves.
