  • Why do we need flu shots every year? Dig into the science of flu viruses and what makes them different from other diseases.
    --
    All year long, researchers at hospitals around the world collect samples from flu patients and send them to top virology experts with one goal: to design the vaccine for the next flu season. But why do we need a new one every year? Vaccines for diseases like mumps and rubella offer a lifetime of protection with two shots early in life; what’s so special about the flu? Melvin Sanicas explains.

      It is ironic to see how blind some people are to the lives saved, while antibiotics are great and have saved many lives, they are far more flawed than vaccines because they are to my knowledge rarely built to target specific illness, this allows for the adaptation of viruses to become resistant while vaccines specifically target the illnesses it was designed for. Yet in spite of this people panic more from that which has and, *very possibly* in the future will save more lives than antibiotics, especially if superbugs do result in higher death rates to disease. @TED-Ed Perhaps a comparison between the two in history would make for an interesting video?

    Slight correction in regards to how the flu exit an infected cell. They do not “burst” open a cell. Instead, they incorporate themselves within the bilayer of the host cell membrane. From there, they exit the cell by a process called “budding”. This allows the virus to possess the necessary proteins on its capsid (Hemagglutinin & Neurominidase) that are used to infect new cells. It’s essentially like a wolf in sheep skin. It’s hypothesized that neurominidase is a protein used for glucose absorption into the cell. So when the virus exploits such a protein, the cell welcomes it into its membrane believing the virus is glucose. And because everyone expresses slightly altered forms of these proteins, the virus is ever so slightly different from the original one that infected the cell it originated from. A process known as antigenic drift. This process of budding is what drugs like Relenza and Amantidine target to prevent further replication. It prevents the virus from budding thus reducing the viral load. However, a similar phenomenon known as antigenic shift also occurs seldomly. This is where the virus genetic variation becomes substantially altered and can contain new genes that allow the virus to cross species. These particular strains are important because their virulence and pathogenicity are greatly increased and allow it spread much more rapidly.

    I honestly don't know how we are a super power with a population that is this scientifically illiterate.

    • @MetallicReg
      @MetallicReg Před 6 lety +13

      The title of a "superpower" is really up to a debate and quite subjective.
      Do you pound most of the money you have laying around that is not actively keeping you alive into the military? Yes.
      Does it help your people? No.
      A superpower is in my book a place where civilization and the development of the well being of the citizens is a number one priority reaching a standard that would be an example for others. This includes health, education and financial stability. So the US is rather a hobby military enthusiast, than a superpower.

    • @bobbyferg9173
      @bobbyferg9173 Před 6 lety +4

      MetallicReg So your definition of a superpower country likely includes many city state countries that can fit into the US thousands of times.
      Most yah the US might not have the highest average standard of living, but it is certainly more influential and impactful to the rest of the world than most countries.

    • @MetallicReg
      @MetallicReg Před 6 lety

      Not really, because city-state countries can't pose as a role model for federal states by being dependant on a neighbor (they all are and most of them have a connected legislation to some of their neighbors - they can be considered semi-autonomous regions with tax benefits for living there).
      The US is not "a country" either - it is a uniquely loose federation. I would not consider it a classical federal republic because its states have a high sovereignty in most questions besides finance and defense. They don't even bail each other out if some need more funds of any sorts to meet a federal standard. So no - the US basically consists of many separate states like the EU does (again only defense and finance are closer) - and no I am not considering ideological belonging, just political circumstances.
      And most of those states don't meet the level of a modern civilisatory example for developing regions. You can't place the argument of size either - your average population density is very low - so all the deserts don't really change the population sectors.
      Again "influence" by control of trade deals backed up by military force is not what I would consider a superpower. This type of influence is not self-sustaining.

    • @bobbyferg9173
      @bobbyferg9173 Před 6 lety +3

      MetallicReg I don’t really care about the technicalities as to whether the US is a country or not (pretty sure there is barely anyone who even would take that seriously anyways) not even sure why you brought it up in the first place. And by these new standards was the US ever a superpower? Or the USSR? Has a Superpower country even existed then. Because it sounds like a no according to what you define as a superpower.

    • @MetallicReg
      @MetallicReg Před 6 lety

      Well while the world consisted of ruins the US was indeed a superpower. It was an example of peaceful cooperation between states which was an inspiration for the EU (the execution is half backed).
      I brought up the question about the homogeneity of the federation because you started to rely on the size to explain your problems.
      The USSR was extremely effective to revolutionize the regions and spread high standards of education - therefore being an example for any other developing area for a long time. However, once the party went overboard it ended like the other socialistic dictatorships (the US just accelerated the process).
      A superpower is a civilisatory high ground area - a la Roman Empire was. Once the others keep up and you miss your time to renovate - well you lose your title _in the best case_ .

      the thimerosal (ethyl-mercury) and various other adjuvants ie aluminum that go along with influenza inoculations are considered neurotoxins and pose a bigger threat than the flu itself for most people. I’m not “anti-vax” by the way, just like someone who wants mercury and heavy metals out of their fish before eating it isn’t considered “anti-fish”. Just be wary of the other ingredients that come along with the live attenuated virus, or in the case of C-19, the S protein which is coated in polyethylene glycol.
