  • Hello my friends!
    If you are new here - i'm not mechanist, i've never worked with milling machine, it is my first project in metal so take this video as report from building process not as how to do this. Thank you.
    In todays episode i'm gonna joint two pieces of stainless steel, but first i'm gonna cut the bed.
    This pieces will be the sole of the plane from previous videos.

      Stavros, these planes are looking incredible and I can’t wait to see how they turn out! I would like to offer one small piece of advice that might help you get those pieces of stainless steel to join up a little easier. Usually after any kind of milling operation there will be a burr left on the edge that was just cut, similar to when you sharpen a cutting tool. That burr can get trapped between two surfaces and keep them from mating up perfectly. I’m guessing that’s what caused the bulging along those edges after you forced them together in the vice, there was no where else for that material to go. A good practice is to use a file or a deburring tool to just clean up every edge to make sure that nothing is still hanging on there to get stuck between two surfaces. I find a paper towel or tissue paper helps to wipe the workpiece because even the slightest burr will easily catch on them and it’s easy to see so I can touch it up some more. I hope that makes sense and that it helps. Obviously, feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Take care!

    Stavros, your work is extremely accurate, and the planes you make are a thing of beauty. It's easy to see you really enjoy your craft here on this channel and the results prove that.
    Thanks for taking the time and effort to post these videos, I enjoy every one, especially the old wooden molding & bench planes. 👍👍

    I held the plane in my hands only once in my life, 60 years ago, I was 3 years old and cut myself badly, so I remembered. However, I was happy to watch all the videos on the channel, I have been signed up for a long time. You can always look at fire, water, the starry sky and how real professionals work.

    A milling machine-oh yes! Now you can make more tools and jigs for making more tools. Now you don’t need expensive files to make plane floats.

    Niesamowita jest precyzja tej maszyny! No i operatora też, pewnie trzeba mieć głowę nie od parady żeby to wszystko poustawiać i uzyskać taki efekt końcowy. Gratuluję rozwoju rzemiosła 👍👍👍

    I so want one of these. I dream of how to make and improve planes. You are a massive inspiration! You obviously have a device that is pulling my thoughts out of my brain and are stealing my ideas!!!😂. I don’t have a mill or a lathe yet but they are on the list. I am on my seats edge waiting for these to be completed and already knowing they will be amazing. It’s like knowing the next movie in the series is going to be awesome and having already read the book! I caught you playing with the metal shavings very much like you bragging about the wood shavings in previous videos. You are one of the few who deserves to brag. Excellent skills.

    Just a friendly comment, im going back and forth throughout the year to my doctor for the past 2 years due to occupational astma, wood bucher 🤘 anyway all is good but the main reason im leaving a comment if because they had told me their biggest influx on people due to breathing issues that develop into COPD is the lubricans for machining metals! - stay healthly!

    That's some impressive stainless machining, for someone that is new to machining. Make sure to check your carbide inserts, those circles from the face-mill make it look like you may have one or more chipped / dull inserts. Great work!

      @StavrosGakos  Před 6 měsíci +1

    No powiem zaimponowałeś mi takie spasowanie i dokładność bez doświadczenia na frezarce typu zośka 😮
    Możesz spróbować skontaktować się z Adamem Maszynotwór ona ma spore doświadczenie z tymi maszynami może coś doradzi czy podpowie co w niej poprawić.
    Ja bym dodał jakieś osłony przed wiórami bo jednak robisz większość w drewnie a te małe cholerstwo potrafi wejść wszędzie.

    its interesting to see how far you went from making planes with just hand tools to milling machinery. Up until now I had no idea what kind of plane you are making, now I would guess a low angle with adjustable mouth. Looking forward to the finished piece.

    Love the video. I can even seeing myself attempting it as a local maker space has a knee mill. And I have questions. It appears to me this is the sole of the plane and the tongue and grove is at the mouth. Was this a cool exercise for the sake of a cool video, or is the tongue and groove important to either the forming of the mouth or some how in use? My wild guess is that making the mouth is easier done on two pieces put together later. I’m really excited to see how all this comes together.

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey Todd, i've miss this comment, sorry. This is only way to make so tight mouth - two pieces of the sole. T&g also keep the sole in flatness under the blade and the wedges preassure 🤟
