  • I bought that old luthier thumb plane in 2019. It's time to bring it back to life and send it to one person who doesn't expect it ;)
I fited an old laminated plane blade to the body, and i make the wedge. It was a lot of work because the pin was a little bit skewed..
As the material for wooden parts i used jasmine wood.
It cames from my friends garden, it was a big shrub with 50mm trunks.
The wood looks almost like boxwood but it is not so hard.
I can't find any info about it but the hardness seems to be similar to sweet cherry or better.
For the finish i used blo, few coats of shellac orange and one coat of tru oil.
Don't take it as a perfect restoration, i just want to allows it work again :)
I hope you will like it!
    Thank you!

Kupiłem ten stary strug lutniczy w 2019 roku.
Dopasowałem do korpusu stary, laminowany nóż i wykonałem klin.
Do wykończenia użyłem pokostu lnianego, kilku warstw szelaku i jednej warstwy oleju tru oil..

Z biegiem lat człowiek mimowolnie zaczyna czerpać satysfakcję z przywracania do życia starych klamotów. 👍🏼

I stopped at 1:07 to admire your plane cabinet. You’re going to need another cabinet! Great and inspiring work as always. I loved the curves at the end of the wedge! One suggestion, which I always make to other CZcamsrs, you need a mat or rug to stand on. Standing on concrete takes its toll on your back and joints.

The sole of the planer must also be curved in both axes and mirror polished ...

I think you needed to soak it longer in the vinegar, there was still too much rust there. Probably over a day. Citric acid works faster and doesn’t smell as much.

Absolutely great work! My eyes are not so good. Was that a .10mm feeler gauge you used when checking the fit? If so, is that a good overall tolerance to use in most hand tool work? Thanks!

For a thumb plane that's really huge!
I was a little worried when you made the width of the blade a close fit in the plane, since you have no lateral adjustment possibility, but with a strong camber on the blade, lateral adjustment isn't needed anyway.
