Honestly, you can probably take the word female out and it still holds true.
No need to split into gender, there's very very few people in the new school that have this combination of an ear for beats, complete flow mastery and variety, crazy pen, air-tight pockets, perfect voice for rap...fucking mind-blowing. Even the ad-libs are perfect, the bars that are left unsaid cause she knows the listener can complete the blanks in their heads. It's just pure, unfiltered hip-hop excellence.

I'm late to the game on Little Simz, but this track/her material is so refreshing as far as "new school" MC's go. She's doing her own thing while keeping the soul of hip hop alive. Mad respect.

The track is J5. A much better group. Most of her stuff samples actual good stuff so I'd advise checking it out if you think this is good.

The bassline and backing is, but lay the lyrics on something sharper and it becomes pretty rough.
I remember listening to Jurassic 5's "Blacktop beat", which uses the same sample as this song, and feeling frustrated they didn't rap on it. Little simz just made my life a little more complete !

Putting a fresh voice to that vintage Busta flow. Laiddddd back quarter note / half note triplet syncopations straight glued to that bassline. I am so late to the party on Little Simz but absolutely stoked about everything I've heard. One of the most exciting rappers I've heard in a minute.
As for folks saying she's one of the best "female" rappers, I say she rhymes circles around most of the run of the mill rap out there these days.

"Name one time when I didn’t deliver" - the only reasonable response is "there hasn't been one time" because Simz always brings top notch lyrics and flows. And at this point, based on her five studio albums - from "A Curious Tale..." to "No Thank You" - I certainly regard her as one of the top 25 MCs of all-time.

The late great Cleveland Eaton on the sampled bass line, he was the bass player for Ramsey Lewis during the Solar Wind album recording when they recorded there version of "Summer Breeze" where that dope double bass sample derives. Why Little Simz and her music aren't a worldwide hit is a mistery too me! It's inventive, it transcends genres. This is the music you should rub in people's faces who say that modern music is crap!
