    As a survivor of attempted suicide (at least in part over a lost relationship), this movie impacted (and continues to impact) me profoundly.
    After the dust settled and I found myself still among the living, loved ones began to confront me about just how much I meant to them, what I'd brought to their lives, how selfish and thoughtless my act was.
    Alexandria: Why are you killing everybody?
    Roy: It's my story.
    Alexandria: Mine too.
    In the moments when I attempted to end it all, my life was MY story. And I'll END it if I want to! But, by and large, people don't live in a vacuum. We're woven inextricably into the tapestry of human existence - even when we're oblivious to it. My life is part of THEIR story.
    I cry every single time I watch this gorgeous, quirky, funny, charming, gut-wrenching, extraordinary film.
    Alexandria: Let him live. Please let him live.

      When she cries I sob. Every time. Like ugly, fetal position, snot running down the side of my face sob while the carcasses of tissue boxes surround me in a primitive stone henge-esque manner of pathetic. But I'm happy to hear it has a resonance among survivors as well. Thank you for sharing.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU this is one of my favorite movies and its crazy to me how its been reviewed by critics or the fact that at the very least it wasnt even nominated for any major awards for the production/set design, costumes, or the cinematography. great vid

      @moviemonarch1617  Před 7 lety +11

      You're so very welcome. I love this film too. It's a visual feast every time I watch it, and has such amazing heart.
      As for why it was never nominated for any major awards, I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say it had something to do with it's finish date and release date.
      I mean, the film was finished in 2006 but wasn't released until 2008. And the application process for an award like the Oscars is pretty strict. So, if no one at the Academy saw it in 2006 (which is incredibly likely), it would've been denied a nomination in 2008. Which makes sense. It would be like giving 'Casablanca' a best picture nomination in 2017.
      So as much as I hate the current academy, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it wasn't entirely their fault/oversight. 'The Fall' was just too independent before being indie became cool.

    I watched this movie just last night and I was awestricken. The conversations between Roy and Alexandria were so believable, and their chemistry! The pacing was actually very good, never once i skipped a scene. It was the slow kind of storytelling which you don't want to end. The characters didn't need much development because that's how Alexandria imagined them and for a kid the stories are seen differently, colourful and based on actions and reactions. And the characters were given things to do and just remain 2D at heart. Which helped to create the fantasy qualities of the movie.
    Thanks for the wonderful review

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 5 lety +9

      "The conversations between Roy and Alexandria were so believable." That's because the actress playing Alexandria wasn't really acting...
      If you check out the behind the scenes footage, you'll see Tarsem Sighn had Lee Pace pretend to be a paraplegic for the longest time. She was so shocked when found him walking she almost cried. But since she also had a hard time memorizing her lines and paying attention, Sighn just worked with it and tried to make the cameras as unobtrusive as humanly possible. So all her confused reactions to Roy asking "are you trying to save me?" when she's giving him the eucharist are real. They're totally unscripted.
      "The pacing was actually very good, never once i skipped a scene."
      That's fine. Movie watching is a subjective experience and if you felt each scene was perfect HUZZAH! I'm happy for you. Truly. But after multiple viewings of this film, I had to admit (and this is just one example mind you) that given the amount of time we spend with each character's death I would've liked to have felt something stronger than mild amusement at Otta Benga falling back on the arrows like an overstuffed pin cushion. I realize the primary purpose of their deaths is to demonstrate Roy's internal desire for self harm, but great scenes can often serve multiple purposes. And I would be lying if I said I experienced even a fraction of what Alexandria felt when Roy killed character's with her friend's faces. Bc truthfully I felt nothing. No horror when the mystic died or sadness when the Indian fell. I just giggled at Otta Benga and pondered over the probability of each arrow penetrating the skin just deep enough so as to be level with one another when he toppled over. I know it's a kids imagination but this is seriously what I thought about when I saw it. That's how little I cared about the other characters. And maybe, just maybe, that's a flaw.
      So thank you for thinking my review was wonderful.

    • @annalieff-saxby568
      @annalieff-saxby568 Před 3 lety

      The characters are already formed in Alexandria's mind: Otta Benga is the ice delivery man, the Indian and the Mystic are fruit-pickers, Darwin is the hospital orderly, Luigi is the one-legged stuntman who visits Roy (that's why he gets shot in the foot).

    I love that the story is Roy's but the visuals are from Alexandria's imagination. The example is that he probably meant first nation when he said Indian but she imagined a man from India. Also I read that no cgi was used, all affects were done on camera. This movie is my favorite too!

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 5 lety +4

      "I love that the story is Roy's but the visuals are from Alexandria's imagination."
      I know. That's what I meant when I said, 'With Roy supplying the story and Alexandria providing the imagination we (the audience) are privy to some of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen...'
      But if you like the Indian versus Native American switcheroo, look closely when the bandits are about to be executed in the desert. You'll see one of the guards is sharpening his sword on a giant chunk of ice. Alexandria turned a 'whetstone' into a literal 'wet stone'!!
      Details like this make me giddy.
      And you're correct! No CGI was used in the making of this film because Tarsem Singh started his career by shooting music videos and commercials. So he knows all the tricks of the trade for getting the best lighting, color saturation levels, and locations for the shots themselves. This movie really is a visual love story to India and its monuments. No effects necessary when the director has that kind of conviction to make it beautiful.

      @Lola Montez all the visuals were from people Alexandria knew so it stands to reason that it's her imagination. She worked with immigrants so who is to know what she did or didn't know. I'm going off of the visual clues that are very obvious in the film. And when I talk about First Nations I'm going to use their preferred term because I'm not ignorant and it's no longer 1920 even if that term isn't used in the movie.

    I’ll tell you my story (related to this movie) I was tired of my country, very tired of the things were happening around me (nothing serios - now I see) but I was 23 and everything used to suck to me... I decided to move on, alone, by myself, with no company, no helpers, no goodbyes ... I packed my little bag and took a train... I arrived to a different country (I knew it before, of course) but never to live in.
    Well... the third week I was living there, discovering the paces around me and thinking what I was gonna do with my life... I met someone... a Romanian guy, I liked him immediately, he was like a poem that a poet is waiting for... I saw him, his eyes, his hand and I fell in love in 5 seconds, I never imagined what was happening... since I didn’t believe in love at first sight or anything like that, he was just what my soul needed at the time but I stayed in silence, I didn’t jump ... I thought he was going to think I was crazy because certainly I’ve never felt that before... then he touched my hand, he kissed my hand and asked me: “come with me to the movies” and I was like in shock because we never talked before, I told him “you look like Miguel Bose” (when he was 25) he didn’t know him and looked for him... two days after... he took me to a beautiful, amazing movie theatre 🎭... and we sat in there... he hugged me (without being anything, just a conversation before the day we met) and the beginning of the screen was ... THE FALL!!!! that day... when this movie ends ( March 14,2008) we walked outside of the movie and... we talked about destiny... we fell in love that day... we loved each other like crazy, like stupid... like (I have no words) from that moment and on... our lives were full of movies, we had coffee every morning, we didn’t eat, we loved each other and we watched movies (we did that for 12 months) I was skinny, he was skinny because we forgot to eat, we didn’t remember than food existed... we used to do the same thing over and over again... coffee, talks, love and movies.... books, museums, movies, coffee, talks, movies, museums, talks, love, coffee... we watched Lars Von Triers films, Kubrick’s, Bergman, Subiela, all the Cannes winners films... we lived for the movies, that was everything for us, and I learned so much from him, he learned my language, I learned his.... he broke me up one day (2 years after I met him) I thought I was going to die, I loved him more than I loved myself, I loved him with every bone and vein of my being, he was my dream... then understood that I needed to live without him... I learned to live without him (2010)... he tried to talk to me some months after he broke up with me... I didn’t want to, I was hurt... he died... since he is gone I have never had a day without thinking of him when I wake up and when I go to sleep... I miss every second of my life... he died when he was 26... every time I see this film I remember his beautiful hands and the way he loved me.... 💕🎭

    I remember catching this film on CBC late one night sometime around 2008-2009, and it reminded me of Malcolm Mclaren's BA commercial which greatly moved me as a child. IT is a truly underappreciated and misunderstood film, and for me fulfilled the cinematic potential of magic realism much better than any other movie I'd seen before or since. Had this come out in 1995, we'd be hailing it as a great Little Princess type classic. I also think it's part of the last great wave of pre social media era cinema when indie directors weren't so burdened by savvy self-awareness and so beholden to a checklist of critical expectations.You can just discover and enjoy it for what it was. In a way, seeing it at the time, it must have felt like a very old type of movie experience that an audience of the time was ready to move past. Too bad, It's a real gem of a movie.

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 5 lety +1

      Well good news is 'the Fall' is slowly increasing in critical esteem. Last I checked it got a 2% bump up on Rotten Tomatoes. Granted it's not much but it has the potential to be a cult classic (if it's not already). And though I can't speak for the rest of the world I can speak (a little) for the 90s film audience in the US and say: I don't think it would have been a hit even then.
      Hollywood film industry really relied on prestige in the 90s to capture audience attention, and 'the Fall' had none of that. Its director was only known for 'the Cell' at the time of its release, Lee Pace was relatively unknown, and Catinca Untaru (though perfectly cast) was no Christina Ricci. But most importantly 'the Fall' didn't have a big studio backing or distributing it.
      And trust me, it matters.
      Hayao Miyazaki would not be a household name if it weren't for Disney doing its dub and distribution. Anyone who says otherwise has clearly never seen 'Warriors of the Wind'. I digress...
      Anyway, Tarsem Singh was bankrolling most of the production himself. With that said, there probably wasn't much left in the tank to give it a great ad campaign and massive global release. In fact only got a very limited one. Major cities only, making it hard for the average movie goer to see it without traveling vast distances. Then came the critics...who weren't all kind. The fairest shake I've ever seen it get was from Roger Ebert, but even his clout wasn't enough to lift it up for people to see it. As a result it didn't get that much needed word of mouth out. And (this kills me) it was just before CZcams critics began to take off.
      Still, I'm hopeful. Maybe it'll never get 'the Princess Bride' cult status but I'd settle for 'Pans Labyrinth' notoriety. We just have to keep talking about it until the Criterion Collection picks it up for better DVD sells.

    Thank you for seeing the migrant worker Association which very few people today would understand unless they had read Steinbeck or seen it themselves being old enough to remember when children did work in the fields or their parents made them go work for their Uncle every summer vacation instead of getting time off like other kids you had to be out there at 5 in the morning and you didn't stop till the sun went down. What really irritated me is I felt like we'd really really worked hard and for all that work barely earned anything. Payment was made on the amount of quality Apple's you could pick not quantity your bag was checked each apples apples were quickly gone through by someone who is an extremely experienced checker so that they could weigh what was the correctly pick type it cetera. if they caught you picking something up off the ground you were in big trouble now this was back in the 70s. My dad even had his do it until the season was over just before heading out to school we didn't have to do it through the rest of the day but we had to put a couple hours in to help him my uncle just before heading out for school Russian shower up and head out to class when we were in high school we were supposed to set up so we didn't have first. Classes that way we could come into school a little later. a lot of children did not get to go to school like we do today & not just migrant workers. My father grew up in a family which owned Orchards they went out and worked just as hard as the people that came and picked for them I know because my dad made us work in the Summers even though he no longer worked in the Orchards he made us know what it was like. And I gained a great respect for what they went through most kids did not get to stay in school especially the boys every year because there were enough people in the family to get the work done my father was able to stay in school and graduate just as he turned 17 his best friend graduating with him that year was 21. Tiny who was over 6 feet had to take every other year off so his brother could go to school also and the father had someone home to help him in the orchard. This did effect families if you had only daughters the same situation. But my grandfather was a different ilk and he believed his children needed the education more than he needed help in the Orchards he made sure the kids went to school first and they could do chores before or after school. He hired help even though it took money out of his family's kakek and made things just a bit harder he wanted to make sure his children were educated and didn't drop out of high school.
    However there was no money for extra things when my father needed a baseball glove my grandfather turned to him and said well those three Hogs down there that I sold need to be skinned and butchered you can have the money that I was going to charge for that and collect the delivery fee if you take them down to the men who purchased them. My dad hated butchering animals with a passion he found it sickening but he needed that glove really bad so he went ahead and did it. I know it was the only time he ever butchered anything. My uncle when in the orchard business unlike my father who couldn't take the cold and had to couldn't work outside like that in the so he had bad lungs but my uncle helped many migrants that had work for him become citizens through the legal process of application and visas Etc so their whole family and children were able to stay and become American citizen. They impress me with their ability to swiftly cuz of their experience pick a lot faster than us kids who only did it part-time.

    The key observation here that the child has a deeper psychology isn’t just a clever twist to think about the movie. It’s accurate if you watch the film it’s pretty obvious that the girl has deeper depressing and traumatic thoughts and reference. I think they intended viewers to think about how she interpreted events from a point of trauma and hardship etc. The interesting thing about it was that not seeing depth in something that could easily be overlooked for it’s style said more about the heart of the audience. My thinking is that with complicated imagery, people want to project a version of complication they couldn’t possibly create and they’re not totally sure what it is. It’s just something other than what they’re looking at. They expect it to reflect some broad idea of possibility that differs from the direction that’s delved into. Doesn’t mean there’s no depth. Why not just go with it and look into that and enjoy it for what it is. Style over substance is one thing, but putting in substance and it still not being enough substance makes you wonder if it’s even possible. Go figure we haven’t really had anything like it since.

    Thank you so much for this! I watched the movie last night and the entire time I had a sense of "I ALMOST like this, but not quite".. but your assessment here helped me turn that corner. I think my main problem was a lot of the back story was hard for me to follow. We glean information about what happened to Roy through short conversations that mostly just allude to what happened. I was confused the whole way who was who and what had happened before the movie's start. For that reason, I had a hard time connecting emotionally .. but I did absolutely love the girl. What a bold risk Tarsem took, and I think it paid off, making her feel very real. Those scenes between them, while occasionally being distractedly improv, were indeed VERY like talking to a 5-year old.. I know, because I have two of them right now! Any way, loved your review.. I'm going to watch the movie again tonight!

      Wow! And thank you for letting me know that what I'm doing helps. Normally, I feel like I'm talking to the converted but vindication is always nice. So, again, thank you for that.
      As for multiple viewings, I highly encourage them. This film (I think) gets better and better the more times I see it, just because there are so many gems that I missed on the first.
      For instance: right before Alexandria pops out of the bag to save the bandits, notice how one of the guards is sharpening his blade on a block of ice. As if Alexandria took the word whetstone and literally translated it as "wet stone" in her imagination. Or how Darwin's monkey is named Wallace after Alfred Wallace, the father of biogeography, who helped shape Darwin's theories on evolution. It's these tiny details that make me giddy to see it again even though I've probably seen it (at least) twenty times by now.
      As for Alexandria's age...it was even harder for Tarsem because it took so long for him to film and edit this thing. So the actress actually bounces around in age and size depending on the scenes, but for the most part it's not too terribly noticeable. Except when they point out that her permanent teeth were beginning to grow in.
      Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed it and that I could help.

      Debatable topics, eh? You came to the right place. I have a quintillion. However, because I really despise lengthy paragraphs (and I have a tendency to ramble), I'm going to bullet point this as much as possible.
      1. How do you define film noir?
      2. Plot vs. character development. Which is more important to a visual story?
      3. Talent vs. Looks in the acting arena.
      4. Is there a comic book bubble in Hollywood?
      5. The transition of big A-list actors going from the big screen to the small screen. Is it a matter of more original stories, more stable work, or is there something more at play?
      6. The influence of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and CZcams Red. Evolution of the digital age or death knell of the cinema theater?
      7. Movies: art or business? (most movies are considered financial failures if they don't bring in twice what they took to make them...which is most of them. If this is a business, the model is severely flawed. If movies are more art then someone has to explain and justify 'Transformers' being green lit for the next 10 yrs.)
      8. Reboots, sequels, prequels, and gender benders.
      9. CGI vs. practical effects.
      10. Why is the story of King Arthur such a hard film to make?
      11. Whitewashing.
      12. Live action vs. animation.
      13. When should (if ever) a studio capitulate to audience demand? Example: shipping, continuation of a franchise long after it's hay day, "Ben Affleck is Batman? No!", etc.
      14. The lack of original scripts being pushed through mainstream Hollywood.
      15. Is the United States too insular in the films it shows?
      If you have any questions about any of what I've just written let me know. I'm sort of a film nerd. And thank you for your lovely comment. I've been meaning to do more reviews, but I got incredibly lazy.

    Hi there, not sure if you're still checking these comments as this is an old vid but just thought I'd leave a thank you :) Something I have noticed is that a lot of people assume it's Walt's placebo that knocks Roy out which doesn't make a whole lot of sense for it to have an effect that strong on him. But if you re-watch the scene closely he takes the 3 morphine tablets along with the placebo which is why he passes out like that! I only stumbled across the movie by accident a couple of weeks ago as Peter Jackson mentioned it in an interview when explaining how he ended up casting Lee Pace as Thranduil. I figured I'd give the film a shot and was immensely impressed, I had NO IDEA that there were so many negative reviews out there, and so much blatant misunderstanding of what actually happened in the film, until I started looking further into it. I've watched The Fall 6 times now in the past couple of weeks, and would buy the blu ray version if I had a blu ray player,. haha, I love it! Thanks again for the positive review, again I was shocked so many didn't like and didn't understand it. Thanks again from Aotearoa/NZ. :)

      Wow thank you! Yes, I still check the comments on this video. Not as often as I would like, but I try to help out as many people as I can find the Fall on DVD as it is VERY difficult to locate in the United States without paying through the nose.
      Anyway I love this film and I'm so pleased others such as yourself have found it. It's a true gem, and I honestly didn't know he took the morphine with the placebos! Well looks like I'm going to have to watch it again lol. Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot.

    • @Vexarax
      @Vexarax Před 3 lety

      @@moviemonarch1617 - Regarding the morphine: this isn't necessarily a good thing but I sadly come from a family of addicts and am an alcoholic myself though recovering fortunately. That one part bugged me after my first watch because I was thinking "I know this is only a movie but a placebo won't knock anyone out that badly especially an addict as was implied later in the film". You _know_ what it feels like when you've got something in your system and he would have started freaking out very quickly upon not getting that familiar 'hit feeling' as you start changing inside. So that's why I went back and watched it again so closely and paused on his hands a few times and yep he's holding the morphine bottle and takes all 3 at once. He'd saved them for that purpose. 3 morphine tablets _will_ knock you out very quickly which is why he's suddenly fighting to stay conscious immediately afterwards and doesn't register that the other tablets are only sugar! Morphine is a hell of a strong drug which is why they make it so hard to get now.
      And yeah regarding acquiring the film, I acquired a digital blu-ray version with the extras (deleted scenes, and the two behind the scenes documentaries) online at no cost and you can also stream it for free (which is no different than watching a lot of the copyrighted content on CZcams!) but I know people get iffy about that sort of thing and one wouldn't promote it as a CZcams creator. I want to support Tarsem and the creators of The Fall and if an official version becomes available to purchase in NZ I definitely will buy it! But for now I'll stick with my beautiful free version ^_^
      Thanks for the reply and sorry to ramble, I am still just so shocked that this film didn't get the recognition it deserves. It's a masterpiece on so many levels!!

      OMG! Thank you so much. And are you ready? Because you just unleashed 'the crazy' by asking me for suggestions. Some of these you may have seen, others are foreign (so I hope subtitles aren't an issue), and my tastes are eclectic and weird so...yeah...

      Time Bandits
      Coolie High
      Man of All Seasons

      the Red Baron (2008)
      Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
      The Blob
      Barry Lyndon
      Funny Games (1997) --if you haven't seen this be warned it is very violent but I think it's worth it because of the ending.
      Rushmore
      M
      The Man Who Laughs
      The Defiant Ones
      A Patch of Blue
      Trumbo

      Waking Life
      Danton

      Jealous Lover (it's one story in a 1953 movie called the Story of Three Loves but IMO it's the best)

      Decoy Bride
      Dangerous Beauty
      Sounder
      Bringing up Baby
      Arsenic and Old Lace
      Superman/Shazam: the Return of Black Adam (worth it because of the Spectre and Jonah Hex shorts are AMAZING!!)

      Legend (2015)
      Eddie the Eagle
      The Man Who Never Was
      Titanic (1953)

      Robot & Frank
      The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

      Movie Monarch This list is Fire 🔥!!! Love “the crazy” thank you so much!
      I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least give some good recommendations to you. Have you ever seen the movie Stay (2005) or Anthropoid (2016) ?
      I feel like you would love those.
      Stay is very eclectic and strange and it’s so weird because the whole movie is made for those who pay attention to detail. The main actors are Ryan Gosling, Ewan Mcgregor, Naomi Watts, and Bob Hoskins.
      Anthropoid was a 2016 War epic with Jamie Dornan and Colin’s Murphy about one of the most overlooked missions in World War II that I have ever seen and they do an amazing job capturing it.

      It's very beautiful. I love how every time I watch it, I find something new. Like the 'wet stone' that the guards sharpen their blades on--Alexandria imagines a giant block of ice. It's literally a wet stone! I don't know, I just think details like that are awesome.

  • @audejacobs7037
    @audejacobs7037 Před 6 lety

    hello , can you tell me what is your opinion about who is the prantagonist and who is a main character between roy and Alexandria?

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 5 lety +5

      Sure.
      So protagonist comes from the ancient Greek word ‘protagonistes’ which means "principle character". So in the strictest of terms here: a protagonist is the main character. They are synonymous.
      Alexandria is the protagonist because everything is filmed from her perspective. Nothing happens without her being there. Even when Roy is telling the story, it's being shown to us through Alexandria's imagination. That is, it’s her interpretation of his words.
      For example: we don't see a Native American when Roy's describing an Indian we a Hindu man. Specifically, the one Alexandria works with. When one of Odious's guards is sharpening his blade to execute the bandits, notice he's not using a wet stone as Roy knows it to be as Alexandria thinks it is: which is giant block of ice. A literal wet stone.
      Which isn't to say Roy's not important to the story (because he is), but he definitely needed her more than she needed him. Because without Alexandria's attachment to him, it is unlikely that Roy ever would have gotten past his own hurt and anger to see his self worth. By getting Roy to change his mind about suicide Alexandria saves him when no one else could. Without her he’d be dead. Without Roy...Alexandria would still be Alexandria. So because of this and the framing of the story it is my opinion that she is the main character.

    I finally just got through watching this film, question, WHY is this great movie with the amazing Lee Pace so hard to find?? Got a used copy for around $40 and that was the cheapest you could find it, my mom was sweet enough to get it for me for my birthday. Just don't understand why it went out of production and no streaming services carry it yet, tis a mystery. A lovely movie❤️

      Honestly I'm thinking of starting a side hustle because I've had enormous success in tracking this movie down for others, but the struggle is real. And the only theory I have for why that is, is just that: a theory.

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 3 lety +1

      @@TheStrawberryCloud Aw thank you. It's not always easy to find copies but it helps to know where to look and who to ask. And that comes from having a lifelong love of underground films and hatred of Amazon. When you don't shop the world's number one retailer it forces you to open your eyes to other sellers. As for my theory it's this: The Fall was incredibly independent. Tarsem Sighn poured a lot of his own money into getting it made. Which means there probably wasn't a lot left over for marketing let alone distribution. And if there is no demand the supply of DVDs will be small. And streaming services are labyrinths of bureaucratic BS. Contracts for who can stream what and for how long in certain territories, like the United States, can be incredibly difficult to overcome. Especially if those properties have used movie clips or songs held by other companies.

      @@moviemonarch1617 Thank you so much for sharing all this info, didn't know he poured his own money into this film, makes it all the more special. Yeah, definitely agree about Amazon, and trying not to always lean on these giants, they wanted over $100 for it on there anyway, crazy. Glad was able to get an official copy of it:)
