i love the terrarium analysis! personally don’t mind annie being underdeveloped or penelope solving the curse on her own. frankly i really appreciate how the message “girls don’t need to be saved” isn’t so agenda-feeling as most disney films make it a point to remind audiences that’s the new narrative. i do wish we still had more of penelope with johnny- theyre so darling and while i applaud him taking care of himself alone because he’s inspired by penelope, they had such cute screen time it would’ve made it nice to see more of that. But most of all….THAT BEDROOM

It's one of my favourite romantic films for the reasons you mentioned, It's more realistic than romanticised if that makes sense

I LOVED Penelope as a kid, and even now it still holds up in my eyes.
So, for context, I was born with a noticeable facial difference called Golden Har syndrome. Thus, affecting the right side of my face. Neither of my parents have it, and it was a surprise to them when I came out. It wasn't as dramatic as the movie, but like, it was still pretty tense XD
Romantic movies with characters who have facial differences/disabilities aren't common. If they are, the disabled character doesn't have much of a personality beyond being, well, nice. Their loved interest is usually the main character and is the one changed by the one with the difference. Like you said, that's not the case here. Max changed because HE wanted to do so. Sure, Penelope helped in that process, but it was Max who made the change.
Seeing a character with an obvious facial difference find independence and love was so, so important to me. Romance is often seen as a silly genre. Not as serious as other types. But it's important. Seeing characters like yourself fall in love with people who accept them is important.
    (Spoliers ahead)
Unfortunately, I do dislike the fact that the nose turns into human one when she finally accepts herself. I feel like it takes one large step backward after so many steps in the right direction. HOWEVER, they do something really interesting with the transformation that I really like. The transformation isn't played off as this wonderful, magical thing. It's not played off as a reward for accepting herself. (Well, it kinda is I suppose, but not as clearly.) Instead, Penelope misses her nose. After finally accepting herself, finding herself worthy the way that she is, suddenly it's taken away from her. Suddenly she doesn't have it anymore. She's sad about it, and that's where I feel like they kinda save the plot line about the nose shifting into a human one. I still wish she kept it in the movie, but exploring this idea of her missing the nose is nice too.
I watched this a few years earlier, right around the time I was getting this thing called a Trachyostomy tube removed. It's basically a breathing tube that I made for almost a long time. Maybe since I was either 16 or 17 (I'm 19 upon the time of writing it). I got it a week or so after I was born. Which is why, when people asked, I just said that I was born with the tube. It certainly felt like I had. For me, my trach was the equivalent of Penelope's nose. While my facial difference Wil never truely go away, the trach was going too, and I felt a sense of sadness because of it. It was a big part of my life after all. It was almost like losing a limb. (To this day, I still feel some phantom f feelings around my neck where it was strapped around it.) Seeing her feeling similar about her nose was nice. I had never seen that before in movies with characters who had disabilities. Where a character misses being who they used to be.
Anyway, long rant over. I genuingly wish this movie became more popular. It's a good, solid film with an adult female lead who has a noticeable facial difference. In a world where characters with disabilities with men, kids or some mixture of the two, it was Nice. It was really, really nice.

I enjoyed the long rant and didn't think it was a rant at all. Rather I thought it was a coherent telling of experience that sheds a unique light on this film, and one of the biggest criticisms lobbed at it: Penelope's disappearing pig nose. Honestly, I thought your take was informative and should be shared with the rest of the class. More people like you should be on CZcams doing what I do.
Also people who think romance is a silly genre can take a long walk on a short pier.

Agreed, this wasn’t a rant at all, but a beautiful and moving description of your connection with this film. Thank you for sharing! And I hadn’t thought about her missing her nose in that way before, so thank you for sharing that too❤️

I ADORE this film! Very Pushing Daisies level of whimsical camp but still able to be grounded in reality for those more heartfelt moments. It’s a delight! 11/10 pure gem imo ♥️

I saw the title, and Kristina reachie and clicked on it thinking it might be good as she’s a great actress....but when I saw James macavoy xD I knew this was going to be a great film to watch. Their chemistry is adorable and believable, the gap in the middle of them separately figuring out their lives did make sense. And if they were together it would’ve had that “strained relationship” trope so I get why the cut it xD I wouldn’t have missed a few extra minutes of them being an adorable couple
😂 also near the end I said to myself “ok 20 minutes left when do they get together....12 minutes left...” 😂😂

I am currently watching the film for IDK the number of times and I always wondered why the father never had the capability of breaking the curse. He never seems to see the nose as a problem and, for the most part, accepts her as she is. Even in flashbacks he genuinely seemed to care about her... not the girl with the pig nose. At first, I thought, "Oh it has to be romantic love" but the fact that she was able to love herself is what broke it then that got me confused. Is the moral that the great super duper grandfather didn't love himself enough to be with the one he loved so that's what brought this curse to be so she had to learn herself all along to then find love in someone who isn't rich?

    • @moviemonarch1617
      @moviemonarch1617  Před 3 lety +15

I don't know if I have all the answers, but I can give you my interpretations.
So, the way I see the father conundrum is Franklin did have the power to break the curse, but failed to do so when he didn't put an end to Jessica's, frankly, batshit ways. By passively letting Jessica lock Penelope away from the public, home school her, while bribing men to take her as a bride, he in essence showed Penelope, and the curse, that he agrees with Jessica. That there is something inherently wrong with Penelope. That she deserves this substandard treatment, hence why the curse never broke.
And it wasn't that the super duper great grandfather didn't love himself enough to be with the chambermaid it's more that Clara died. This is a lex talionis moment for the witch. She wanted the Wilherns to suffer like her daughter did. To feel that rejection of love Clara was entitled to but never received from the Wilherns. So, really, it's a lesson in forced empathy and introspection. That self worth should never be something other people give you but you bestow upon yourself. Does that make sense?

I always thought it needed to be someone from outside the direct bloodline, but thinking on it now, Penelope accepting herself breaks it and she's obviously in the family's bloodline .
Maybe males from the bloodline specifically were exempt? Like, the guy who got cursed could have understood the curse and chosen to love his own daughter (except he had all sons so it never came to that).
My theory was that the dad always did love her as she was, given how Penelope's mum was the one pushing for all the crazy stuff.
I like the theory that his passivity in his wife's actions counted as not truly loving/accepting her though.

This is my favorite movie! What a great analysis. I would’ve loved to see that scene you created between Annie and Penelope to give their friendship more depth. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how much I relate to Penelope because of her nose (which you could replace with any of your own insecurities), her family life and her love life. Whenever I’m feeling down, I watch this movie again and it gives me a lot of hope 💕

Okay I watched this movie four times and this movie has problems...
    1. James McAvoy's character didn't have any development they only put him in this movie because he's beautiful and obviously attractive.
    2. Her Mom is terrible making her daughter believe she's ugly because of her nose.
    3. Her dad barely says anything.
    4. Characters who didn't matter got screen time over Max who deserved it.
    5. The relationship between Max and Penelope is not really developed it was hard to get behind them at the end of the movie.
    6. The second half of the movie really drags the movie down with that plot twist that didn't make sense and before i say this having confidence is a big deal in life but why have the audience believe she was insecure but the whole time she wasn't that really upset me cause the storyline was for her to kiss someone only for that not to be true.
    7. Penelope was a good main character but when she left her house she didn't do anything interesting.
    8. Second half is bad only the first half is good.. I would give this movie 5/10 second half makes it hard to watch
