Oh my goodness, this piece turned out so SO BEAUTIFUL!
One thing that Iâd like to caution you about! As a 65 year old mother of 2 and grandmother of 5. Please PLEASE donât go to peoples home by yourself that you donât know!! Iâve heard on the news one to many horror stories of people being tricked into a home and terrible things happening to them! Be safe and always be extremely cautious!! I donât want anything happening to our furniture flipping teacher!! â€ïž
That was h same thing I thought. Iâm a 64 year old grandmother!
@@shirley1091 weâve been around the block a time or two! This worldâs crazy now!
Not a grandmother, but old enough to be, but totally agree! Life is different today.
Agree with you 100%! That was a dangerous move.
My thoughts exactly. You're such a beautiful person and I can tell you have a trusting soul. Please always go with someone. Never alone. We don't want anything to happen to you.
I was impressed by the way you showed us that things do go wrong with flipping, itâs so easy to get discouraged, but you calmly worked through it, it a beautiful piece and you aced it again as always!!
Gotta show it all! Itâs not always easy and I want people to know that even I struggle sometimes too! Thanks for supporting & watching!
Nice job, One thing I would have done is sand the top edge to remove the dings, I can see them even after all you did. Keep up the great saving work.
I have an antique vanity my grandfather I never met gave my uncle to specifically give to me from him. Itâs precious to my heart and my first and only gift from him. I never met him but i cherish his gift dearly and its wood is peeling and there are some chips in the wood. I want to restore it myself. If I canât then I will hire someone else but Iâd like to at least give it a try
Thank you for this video â€
I apologize for being a downer here but I would like give you a little constructive advice. I refinish furniture for a living, including Antiques. If you had tinted the primer the same tint as your paint, or close to the color, you could have helped that stain blocker save you from applying an additional coat of paint. I also see you using way too many small/short brush strokes with the paint and sealer. I hope you can understand I had to learn by trial and error as well. Love your work though and I admire what you are bringing to CZcams. God Bless
There are so many different techniques and each painter tends to have their own habits and ways of doing things. Maybe she did not tint the primer because Bin is shellac based while the paint is ceramic based? Whatever the reason, Iâm not sure how constructive your advise is.
Your input was great. Appreciate your help
Well I don't know if u helped her but u DEFINITELY helped me! Thanks, gr8 advice
good advice!
it's quite surprising (to me) how many people believe that primer CAN'T be tinted!
This is good advice ! I didnât think about it and now I know! Thank you.
AMAZING! It turned out so well. I did a navy desk for my dad. He needed a desk that he could put his wheelchair under. I found an antique table that was probably used in an entryway. I ended up staining the top and doing the rest in the color "In the Navy" by Dixie Belle. He loves it and I kept looking at it and saying, I did that!
Just ordered that color canât wait to try it on my momâs old desk.
I started watching your channel obsessively about a month ago and now I own a sander, brushes, paint and started working on some chairs I had in the garage. Thank you for all the inspiration and knowledge you share.
What a beautiful flip! Love that you pay attention to the small details. Shows how much of a professional you are. Thanks.
I found this so satisfying (especially on the side) as Iâve often wondered about the beautiful pieces that have a story of abuse. Thank you for your complete explanations and especially your âhackâ ideas! Normally I love it when you expose the wood in more places but this one needed a hug of primer and paint all over.đ Today I learned the benefits of using ceramic based paint and that it takes many hours of work to restore these gorgeous pieces. ThanksâŁïž
Love watching you. I am a teacher of 28 years. Still working. Good for you. Once a teacher you are a teacher of everything. Thank you for teaching me how to refinish furniture. I just purchased a piece to refinish for my new home.
Beautiful piece, Lauren!! Love the navy and wood stained bottom combo. I agree, definitely wouldâve gone with gold, especially with that gorgeous navy and wood combo. BUT, itâs what the client wanted. One of my first commissioned pieces ended up taking 3Xs longer on what shouldâve been pretty straight forward bc I ran into unexpected issues. Lesson learned on setting a fixed price before getting the piece and really knowing what I was dealing with. Love your videos!đ
Iâm just getting into flipping furniture and find your videos very educational and inspiring. I have collected several furniture pieces but havenât yet restored them. I consider you to be the best source of information and inspiration because you put alot of thought into your project and show respect for each of furniture piece when you decide to restore or update them. Thank you!!!
You're a good teacher and I've always learned something from your videos. Thanks for the tips and how to restore or fix veneer. I've got a small chest that's in need of a fix like this and anxious to use your knowledge. Great teacher and I look forward to all the videos in the future. Beautiful project! Have a blessed day đč
Thanks for explaining the veneer. I just bought a dresser and some of the veneer has peeled. I didnât know whether to glue the lifting pieces, but peeling off anything loose and using the Bondo made more sense. I feel confident now in giving mine a try. Beautiful work!
I actually love this. Thank you for posting this as this is exactly what I needed. I brought a depression era vanity and armoire back from my late mother's home that belonged to her parents and it is in about as tough shape, perhaps a little worse, than this piece was. I knew I was going to need to do some wood filling, sanding, and ultimately paint but wasn't sure which products to work with, and I was ideally going to replace the hardware as it's a burnished black, but most of the hardware in my home is silver -- but now seeing the rub and buff, this is what I'll go with to restore the hardware too and keep it all original. Your piece turned out fantastic and I hope in time mine will as well!
As always itâs beautiful. I use a lot of restore a finish I love how it brings dull wood back to life.
Yes! Thank you! I love that product! Thanks for watching!
I just did a mcm set that is this same color combo. I used fusion in ash. It looked dark gray in the can but came out deep navy like yours. I used fusions hemp and beeswax on the whole thing to seal it instead of a traditional top coat. That wax was AMAZING on the wood I will say for your info because I think it will save you time and you can use it all over on dark colors đ.
I hate sanding more on a wood base after I painted a dark color close to it. I had to do the same as you too. I like how you tried a new brand and color. Great job!!
Such a wonderful piece and you did a great job with it, Lauren! You mentioned it was commission piece. I typically am not a fan of gold, but I think gold hardware would've really popped against the navy. It makes sense that your client wanted to change the hardware color in order to stick with a color already used in other pieces within their living space. Uniformity makes sense. Either way, the unloved, forgotten piece now looks stunning and will once again be a part of someone else's life. That's a definite win for you, your client and this awesome dresser!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed and I totally agree about the hardware! Thanks for watching!
You also showed that not every crappy looking piece is doomed to the dump. This turned out beautifully and I love the hardware on it.
I learned so much in this video, particularly regarding the veneer and the feed & finish. I'll definitely use that inside the drawers from now on. I love how you take your time and explain things. BTW- I'd definitely go with gold.
A great piece for $10. You did a beautiful job painting and restoring this piece!! I think I would have liked the hardware to be a matte gold. Gorgeous.
Thank you very much! I appreciate your support & kind words!
I know you have heard this before. But,just as you tinted the top coat with the main color, you could also tint your primer.
wow. loved the details and the hard work on this piece. You did amazing.
Really love how you explain all the products and steps. âŁđŻ Thanks for sharing!
Lauren, is there a reason you donât paint the bottom âedgeâ of the drawers? Just wondering.
You are an artist and so smart. Paying your student debt and doing what you love full time. Congrats! Love all your instructive videos and appreciate all your steps in making a beautiful outcome. Great tips. Thank you and continued success.đ
I personally like the cool of the silver with a dark navy but I agree, it depends on what your client's current color/metal theme is in their home. I am not completely sold on rub and buff yet, have only worked with ebony and found adherence issues with it but for spot fixes it is awesome. I had chosen oil rubbed bronze fixtures in the bathroom and had to tone down some of the "copperish bronze' accents on the pieces, worked well. Thank you for the explanation for the bondo choice, I need to pick some up tomorrow for a trim piece repair.
Thank you for such a great video from start to finish. You really do a great job showing everything you went through to get the perfect finish. Awesome job!
Our pleasure! Glad you thought so (:
You took a shabby falling apart piece and transformed it!!! WOW!! Well done!! We just inherited some very nice MCM pieces, but they are too pretty to paint or restore, so I keep hoping one day I will find a more shabby one that I can at least paint the body. I LOVE how this turned out! Magic!
I'm a few minutes and already intrigued, new subie †I already know it's going to be amazing đ
.... and that is exactly why I like your CZcams site----- because you give easy instructions including all information -- like the fact that this stuff has a strong odor and high VOC --- a very important fact for people with elderly or children at home -- thank you...
Beautiful work! Thank you for all of the tips!
What a steal. Great color choice definitely the silver pulls. Great job you two đ
I like the hardware, they go with the piece well. Like you I would have made the hardware gold. It turned out beautiful. I was a little worried the paint was too teal in the beginning myself. But 4 coats later and it's fabulously deep deep blue. Good job!
You did a fantastic job. Love the colour!
Wow you've come a long way since I've started watching you a year ago it's amazing how much you've learned and now can teach other people and I thank you for that this peace turned out very lovely and of course I would have went with gold handles I've always been more of a gold person than a silver person, thanks again for sharing and teaching us Lauren!
Great job and I loved how you fixed something that went wrong as most projects never go perfectly.
Great piece and you did a professional job. Thanks for sharing. In MY house the hardware would need to be gold
I love the way it turned out! Wouldn't change a thing!
turned out amazing!! well done !
Thank you! Cheers!
I found that most paint shops will gladly darken your primer to almost match your paint. It's worth the wait and down the road any chips or nicks on the piece won't stand out white. Nice work though, enjoyed watching your vid!
I was just looking through your channel the other day for tips and advice on dealing with veneer! It honestly makes me the most nervous to tackle, especially as a newbie, because Iâm terrified of ruining the piece. Thank you đđŒ
Awww, in my opinion you can't really ever ruin a piece that bad to where it can't be fixed. Try and you may fail a few times but learning is what's important! Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching!
You can't ruin anything unless you cut it. You can always sand it back.
Walnut wood hardware would look amazing on this piece. Great job as always!
Nice, that turned out amazing. Love the silver handles.
Wow, girl that was amazing! I agree with the gold... I was not feeling the silver... but you did a fabulous job! The base was absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lauren you are a sanding artist! Beautiful job to both you and Neimanâșïž
Just what I needed to see because I have a piece with peeling veneer. Now I know how to handle that problem. Also want to paint it navy. I love the walnut finish on the legs.
Loved the final result. I am big on original period hardware, but a wood pull in this same style would have been beautiful too or even edge to edge brushed brass in the same style as these would have been a modern spin to this Mid Century beauty. Nice job!
Leather pulls matching the legs. Would still not clash with the silver in her other pieces at home đ
What an excellent job. The dresser is gorgeous, very striking.
So beautiful! Your hard work paid off!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Turned out gorgeous! I love the hardware, their shape & style, fit exactly with the piece but yes I would have chosen a brass. I think in brass they would have picked up the tones and shape of the base. But fantastic job!!!
Love the drawer slide tip. Thanks! I have some Feed and Wax on hand. Will use it on my next piece.
I like to watch you redo pieces. This one was specially interesting as it was just like the first peice of bedroom peices we had. The exception was the side draws had doors on them. But is was interestering, I thought mine would look like that if I still had it. I like how you gave it new life.
Perfect piece for painting:)! It is beautiful:).
Looks amazing!!
Your very good at what you do keep up the good work Im learning so much about furnitue restoration .
Awesome, thank you! So glad you're enjoying and learning at the same time!
Nice job, Lauren! Beautiful!
I think silver and or gold looks good with blue. You did a wonderful job as alwaysâŠItâs beautiful!đđđ
Great job working through the challenges! Beautiful piece. I think navy looks great with gold but understand if the buyer has silver, makes sense to be more cohesive.
I love what you did with this pieceđ
I'm not sure how you can, but you get better and better. That is beautiful!
You do such great work, I think the client chose the right hardware color.
Thank you for so many informative and clear to understand videos. You have taught me so much and I really appreciate that. I have a vintage vanity that needs TLC and updating. Would I stand a better chance to separate the 2 sides into end tables or do you find there is a market for the vanity in one piece?
I love it just the way it came out. beautiful.
This is gorgeous! And I definitely wouldâve probably did gold but my husband said I do too much gold đ but honestly you did such a great job the silver honestly looks good with it!
Iâve used just the regular bondo the grey one and it works soo good I done think I will ever use anything else because of how it just forms to it
I agree about safety first! And you show it. Walk the walk. Not do as I say not as I do. â€ïž
Thanks for yet another awesome video! I have a couple of questions. First, with the damage that this dresser had, would it have been possible to use some type of clear shellac to block out the water stains, bondo, etc, then stain it (as opposed to painting) without those things popping through? Second, did you choose to use the wax on the drawers, rather than the restore product, simply because it provided a more durable finish? They looked absolutely gorgeous after that application and I couldn't believe what a difference it made! I'm just wondering if the same look could have been achieved by using the other product. Thanks again for all of the support and inspiration!
I'm so happy you saved that gorgeous piece! Magic hands! I would also go for gold.
I love the color. Gold color handles. Awesome job!
I like the silver with the blue. Love mid century. Great job
I love the music and the quality of the video is Amazing đ€©
Oh my lanta! Finally, someone explains what bleed through is. Thank you!
There are several types of bleed through..wood tannins from certain wood species; certain clear finishes create bleed through as they break down; and then there is embedded nicotine from long term abuse from smokers. All of which need to be blocked from bleeding into your paint layer.
Wow, what a project! I loved all the new graphics at the beginning. What did you do with the mirror?
Doing things the client's way is the best for your reputation! Gold would be my go-to as well, however I do like the combo you used here.
I love what you did to the bottom!
I like the silver, but I think I would have put some kind of drawer pulls on the little drawers, too. It turned out very well!!
Turned out great đ. Thank you.
loved this makeover
Glad to see that there's a Wood Bondo. I'll have to try it. Damage a lot of the times keeps me from buying pieces. This will definitely be a game changer. Does this primer come in gray? I use gray under dark colors. It always takes no less than 2 coats and sometimes 3. If I paint a dark color, I usually add a little of my paint color. It helps a lot. One thing I can't stand is streaks in a top coat. Doesn't it kinda make you ill when you get a piece completed and have to redo something? It does me !! What a great change !! I would've put gold hardware but like you said, you have to do what the customer wants. I love this MCM piece. Thanks Lauren and Neiman for another great video !!
Bondo is a game changer for sure! This primer doesn't come in gray but can be a bit tinted to be gray. I never thought of seeing about putting a bit of my paint in the primer to tint it that color. I may have to try that! Glad you liked the final result! Thanks for watching!
If you canât get a grey primer for under dark colours, use clear shellac. Itâs an excellent stain blocker, primer, and nasty smell encapsulater. Way better than primer.
I think silver drawer pulls are the perfect color. Enjoy your videos a lot!
Looks great, and I like the silver on the original hardware. If your client ever wants to go back to gold, she has the original hardware and can just strip it back to the old finish. Very impressed with how Restore a Finish worked on the legs. I think I will try that on an old dresser that needs restoration, not paint.
Great idea! Restore-a-finish is a great product! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! Nicely restored piece! Please help me! I have a veneer dining table and itâs already chipping away in a few places! What can I use to seal it before itâs too late and all peeled?
i discovered that if you use a smaller dab of the hardener, it still hardens up really well and it doesn't dry as quickly. It helps that it remains malleable a little longer and it's a little more forgiving :)
I've been trying to find you! I normally watch you on CZcams but there's been nothing new on there. Glad to see a new video.
we took a little break for the holidays but have been back since the beginning of January. Weâve posted 6 videos. be sure to subscribe & put the notifications on so you get notified when we pst a new one đđŒ
You have inspired me to get some Bondo and repair a piece of furniture that our puppy chewed!
I like how the piece turned out I did see the nails come through you did a good đjob with all the repairs you had to do to make this peace turn out so well !!!! I do like the color of the hardware but I like silver better than gold that's just my opinion everybody likes different colors you always do a great job sending love from Oklahoma
Personally I would have gone with gold original hardware, but understand the need for a cohesive look with her current pieces. I LOVE the paint choice with the walnut base. I give it a thumbs up.
I love the shade of blue đđ with the dark walnut legs. Beautifully done!
The hardware choice for this versatile piece will determine the style -if the client wants pewter then you need to go pewter. By not changing the style of hardware you maximized the style possibilities. Iâd have gone with a more ornate design to pop from the clean lines of the piece but I could also see it with more modern style hardware.
I really love the migration away from painting furniture with either ebony, some shade of white or a neutral like sage or taupe -blue is so cheerful and vibrant his blue in particular is unique and lovely! Very nice job.
Ps maybe bc my dad was such a stickler for detail but I think youâd take your quality up a notch by finishing the bottom edge of the dresser and the bottom edge of the drawers. Both had spotty areas of primer and/or paint. Higher quality means you can charge more too⊠đ
Look forward to seeing more of your projects/videos and I might have to try that blue Chippy Paint myself! đ
I often spray the hardware and then add the rub n buff to age it, I like the European Gold tone. But I agree, have to somewhat match the client's furniture. I would use the original pulls.
The wood filler Bondo product I did not know about until today I think I will try it, thank you Lauren. I am interested to know if the wood filler Bondo can be made to accept stain and match an existing stained wood or not.
I enjoy your work wow! Beautiful
I can't help wonder about what your skin is absorbing without gloves on.
Hahaa totally called out the price at the end! Lol. I was really surprised by the price of the tools you had to get, I tut it would have been more than 50 bucks. But great to know.
I would have changed the handles too, would have kept it silver maybe a little brighter silver. But, it's your client request so I get it. As for keeping the brown on the base, I would have personally just kept everything dark blue or navy. That's just me. Your details and safety precautions were on point. GREAT JOB!!
Beautiful Peice!! I heard you mention that it is cold outside or else you would be using your paint sprayer - do you prefer spraying vs brush painting? Do you find the finish comes out better when you use a sprayer?
You did a good job. It looks good!
Thank you!
I have a dresser and chest that looks like this. A daunting task! You at least showed it is possible but I'm not sure I'm up for it! . Good video
Looks Great ! Where did you get those specific clamps ?
Great restoration, I agree about the gold hardware!
I love your videos and I am learning so much! Can you add saying what grit sanding paper you use at certain times? I am confused on that. What grit are you using at 14:14 to sand down the bondo on everything?
đ well done, You did it wonderfully and skillfully.
