  • With a lot of our tractors on our farm being the John Deere sound guard models, I take a look at the 2 transmission options of the quad range transmission and the 15 speed transmission.

    Thanks for taking the time to go over those two types of transmission that John Deere had to offer. I see that you & I operate tractors about the same way in the sense that we both downshift when coming to the end of a pass working in the field. I have to admit, not having to use the clutch with either one of those transmissions is a plus when working away in the field. As for doing loader work, I prefer the Shuttle Shift or John Deere's Power Reverser type of transmission or even better, a Hydrostat Transmission. I've got a John Deere 4600 compact tractor & it's got the Power Reverser transmission with 12 speeds forward & reverse, three ranges & four gears. Take care.

    Like you we've had a variety of John deere transmissions, and yes they are all good. We however no longer have livestock,and now grain is our only product. Even though we have cold winters here in southern Missouri, what you have is probably colder. We just did hogs and beef cattle so with the exception of grinding feed, we could wait out the cold. It,s obvious your situation is totally different and those tractors have to go regardless. Your preferance makes sense for what you do. This was a good video for a cold days entertainment. Thanks again Mike and stay safe.

    I really like these 18F-8R transmissions like the one in the 2940 you showed. Thos are also quite handy transmissions for loaderwork because reverse and low range is also easy to shift. I also really like the powerquad transmissions.

      @@mikep7810 yeah it is I drive a 1640 with this transmission and I really like the hi Lo in every gear. I'm planning to buy myself a 2030 1973 which also has this transmission. Although you've got three gearlevers instead of two it's about the same as the one in the 1640 and 2940. Here in Europe it's known as te ls (lasshaltung getriebe) transmission or power synchron.

    • @KevinJD2030
      @KevinJD2030 Před 10 měsíci

      @@mikep7810before I forget to mention it as standard the European ones came as 8F-4R without the power synchron. Optionally they came with the power synchron which made it a 16F-8R or with a creeper gear which also made it a 16F-8R or just with both because why not😂😂 I've seen a 2040s with creeper gear and the power synchron so it had a 32F-16R. This is as far as I know the case for European John Deere (the ones made in Manheim).

    We have a 4230 and a 4430 with quad range trannys a 4640 8 speed powershift and a 4250 15 speed powershift. You explained the quads perfect but you can ask your local dealer but the powershift doesn't need the clutch unless you're doing close quarter work. The clutch use is actually hard on the 8 speed as it's actually a dump valve and starves the clutch packs of cooling oil. The 15 speed is fully modulated and can shift to nearly any gear and it will shift smoothly to it but I usually go 3 or 4 at a time till I get to the gear I want. The 8 speed is NOT modulated and needs to be shifted one maybe 2 gears at a time at most or going up you'll hit the back window and going down you'll take the steering wheel to the gut!
    We dairy in northern Illinois and letting all of them warm up before you put them to work in the cold is mandatory.
    That said,great video loved the content!

      I didn't know until I'd had my 4450 for 3 years and the service rep for my dealer (Blanchard Equip) told me.
      On the 15 speed, you can put the stick all the way to 15, and the tractor will start off in 8 and shift itself up to 15.

  • @tonyprice5364

    I like the quad range shifter better than the actual 15 shifter. My father trained me up on quad shifting coming up as a child. The quad shifting is better on a transmission versus the 15 shifter because you have to clutch when you're going from low range shift to high range shift. For our purposes we have always run quad ranges because we feel that you get more power to the ground. Also if used properly they seem to last a little longer and easier to work on. That’s important when you are paying someone else to do it as that is generally labor is half of the bill. Also it’s much easier to skip gears. You can just run range shifter up a,b,c,d and you basically skip 4 gears .

    Late to watching this, but you can warm up the hydraulics and transmission by putting a "jumper" hose in 1 set of remotes and running the SCV for a few minutes, and it heats up the oil. Same problem with the 19 speed, and the IVT is even worse. I've run almost every transmission JD has made, from the 6 speed in the "A" to the IVT. Any that have Left Hand Reverse are great for loader work. When I switch from a LHR to the Powershift 19, I often hit the turn signals! 😂

    • @mikep7810
      @mikep7810  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Haha I can imagine. On our wheel loader the forward/reverse switch is on the joystick. If you climb in the loader a lot of times you'll see the turn signal had been hit

    • @MorganOtt-ne1qj
      @MorganOtt-ne1qj Před 6 měsíci

      I love it. I'm not sure about durability, but it is very nice to run. You find your working speed at the first detent, and can either slow down if you have to, or bypass detent to make turns on end rows. And with Field Cruise, it modulates speed to maintain PTO RPM's. Like going uphill cutting hay, it will slow down as drag on the motor increases. I'm sure it would be the same with a chopper. But a JD Tech said not to expect 10000 hours from it. My job has 3 tractors over 10k, 2 are 19 speed power shift, and 1 of them got a new trans at 14000 hours, the other is near 17k. And a 6420 with Power Quad around 11k. All have loaders.
