That's the thing. You've drove it for 50 years. I'm 17 and have drove tractors for a long time on the farm but it's been all quads, powershifts, and ivts. So this "simple" transmission is something I have never seen or used
When I was still farming I had a 3010, 3020, and 4020 all with the Syncro Range transmission and loved them. Later got a 4040 with Quad Range and loved it too. I understood the Syncro Range from the start but like you've said some folks were terrified of them. Good video!
Well,,, you did a great job of making it sound a lot more complicated than what it is. Power Shift is the better and more reliable transmission for that generation but the Syncro Shift is very good for that time of the early 1960's. You can ruin the transmission very quickly if you tow tractor with shifter not in Tow position. Excellent tractors with a very good reputation which is why they still have very high resale value and still working hard yet today. Edit: I forgot to mention I have a 2510 gas with Syncro Range in family since 1 yr. old.
I drove two 4020 tractors, one power shift, the other synchro shift. Of course the power shift was easier. My uncle had two 1206 internationals. Much easier to shift than the synchro shift.
I just watched a reel on Instagram where a guy explains how to shift gears on one of those things. I got more confused, so I had to search on CZcams for a better explanation…
@@bluemountainfarmer2440 there's a reverse behind 7th. It's often blocked off as it is quite fast but can be made usable. I used to use it to beat the cows out of the corral when we fed with a 4320. Actually I believe there is a reverse behind 8th as well but you really got to hack up the dash to get the shifter down that far. I honestly never understood what was so confusing about this shift pattern. I figured it out in a minute with no guidance the first time I climbed on one of these tractors. The shift pattern is clearly labeled. Guess some people catch on to certain things faster than others. I know there are plenty of things that I don't understand.
@@mwfarms It's a John Deere 4000 not a 4320 the 4000 and 4020's only had 2 reverses 3rd and 5th the larger tractors in the series like the 4320 had a 7th reverse. Even if I would ruin a perfect dash like that the gear still has to be in the transmission which it would not be there because it is not a 4320 which had the 7th reverse
@@bluemountainfarmer2440 my apologies. The video didn't specify that it was a 4000. I am not familiar with that model. I took for granted that it was a larger model. Did not mean to offend.
THee is a Third Reverse...... you just can't get to it... The shifter quadrant was designed for using the tractors under their first tractor mounted cotton pickers..... which allowed a higher transport speed when moving from farm to farm.....After Deere quit using them under the pickers they eliminated the slot in the quadrant....

I have a John Deere 3020 synchro. I find it hard to shift. I need to do a lot of jiggling the shift level to get it into gears. I have tried to adjust the linkage but it did not help. Any advise?
Whoever have designed this gear shifter probably have had diarea and was in hurry while designing it. The explanation in this video is even more cofusing.....for exaple autor of the video is explaining: You got 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear while everyone can see 1-3rd, 2-5th, 4-7th and 6-8th gear. I can't believe all the videos that pop up on my feed about this simple transmission that I first drove almost 50 years ago.

The power shift sucked. Synchro was always better.

Didn’t learn a thing here
basically, what i understood was, 1st gear, 2nd gear then 3rd low, 3rd high, reverse low, 4th gear, 5th low, 5th high, reverse high, 6th gear, 7th gear and then 8th gear
There's a secret 3rd reverse depending on if they have it blocked or not
These are pretty simple really. On the highway without a load, just pull out in 6th and go straight back into 8th .
I watched a dude shift through the gears without saying a word and thought i understood it. I watched this and got way more confused
FAR easier than it looks.
Clear as mud.
The camera my guy... nice walk through tho

Actually it has a 3rd reverse it just doesn't show it and it is super fast I use it on my grandfather's tractor occasionally
3rd and 5th?

I always understood it that they locked out 7th reverse due to warranty and safety concerns.

Do you have to clutch when you shift?
Yes, unless you want to grind em till you find em
If it's like my international you can probably float em.

Could be the pins on the end of the linkage could be worn out and you might need to tighten up the pin behind the thrust washers
On some of them gears do you have to push the clutch or all of them if you're like upshifting
You have to push the clutch for every gear
Tried to watch but vomited right away.

How to drive a synchro? Get a power shift.
Jesus I'll make sure to never buy one. That gave me a headache in 15 seconds
Once you use one a few times it is easy to do.
