  • David Putrino, a neuroscientist and physical therapist, is director of rehabilitation innovation at the Mt Sinai Health System in New York. Over the last three years, the rehabilitation center he oversees has worked extensively with patients experiencing prolonged symptoms after an acute bout of Covid-19, or what has become known as long Covid (LC). On Monday, he posted a thread beginning with this:
"We are in our fourth year of work to understand #LongCovid and we now know things about it thanks to science. After being told again by a quasi-well meaning, if uninformed, clinician that LC is just functional neurological disorder (FND). Here’s a thread on why LC IS NOT FND.“
I spoke with Dr Putrino earlier today about his thread and some of the push-back it received.

What is that mental condition called where a medical professional gets a lifechanging anxiety of their own lack of knowledge, so much they blind themselves into a self-preserving delusion, which triggers the mechanism of successfully blocking out all information and evidence on conditions they don't understand, then effortlessly directs all their energy into telling a physically sick patient they're mentally ill, so the risk of patient death outweighs own ego death?
Thanks for your work, it means a massive deal to many. Cheers

Thank you for this incredibly credit report - i had to beg for doctors to do something - I practically died from 2 different meds. My mind is a little clearer & when i hv energy i try & research meds & supplements etc. i have to listen at least 5 times to understand & then try to write notes. I got the Delta Variant mid july 2021! Its now May 2023. Im about to lose my job. Was in the hospital for almost 3 weeks. I thought, give it 2 more weeks to rest & I should be ok. Two days out I got Covid Toes which was so painful I could barely walk w/ stabbing pains that felt like being stabbed by knives! I thought I would die. From there things went down hill. I now had a list of ailments & symptoms. Had to fight with my doctors cuz i had to save myself to be able to take care of my son with Autism becuz i have no family. I would cry every day. I felt no one would listen. My neurologist said don’t take any narcotics for pain as it can make the covid brain permanent - so just kept enduring the pain. I lost things constantly, ended up stuttering if I got stressed - i could feel the muscles in my neck freeze like rocks when that happened, i would lose my meds... etc etc. Doctors in the hospital may have saved me, but doctors outside practically drove me to a huge depression as i had to fight to get someone to help me! A huge thank you for this information. My whole body is affected! And i keep trying, listening & reading when my body lets me. There are days i just want to give up. I so greatly appreciate the acknowledgment & hope!!! If things dont go well for me is there anywhere i can donate my brain & organs for any studies to hopefully help others? For my son’s sake i hope i make it thru but hope with more organs more answers will come for all suffering.

Living with long COVID has been a roller coaster ride for better than three years. I've learned a great deal about treatments that work for me. The key is a diet free of any types of sugars and occasional fasting (I suspect COVID remains in the gut and sugar feeds it.); moderate exercise; a cocktail of supplements used to treat AIDS patients with damaged mitochondria back in the 80's; serrapeptase, nattokinase, aspirin as blood thinner, and atorvastatin for endothelial dysfunction; a host of supplements and vitamins.
Today, I can easily walk five or six miles on level surface, but climbing hills requires pacing. Mowing the lawn and strenuous yard work requires pacing.
Recently diagnose with PMR polymyalgia rheumatica, I now take 15 mg steroids daily, the PMR being the latest problem associated with COVID, the autoimmune systems compromised by whatever. I just roll with the punches.

It depends on what tests you got. The tests your GP and even a specialist can order often won’t show much, but in a research lab you will see differences between Long Covid and healthy controls. Mas spectrometry for example can see DNA Methylation profile differences and protein profile differences, that are vastly different in Long Covid compared to healthy controls.
Interestingly those same Long Covid patients profiles match ME/CFS
Also a lot of the findings of Long Covid patients are from autopsy, after the patient died from an unrelated cause like a car accident.
There’s also the 2 day ICPET (invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test) which on day two shows massive problems with VO2 Respiratory Exchange Ratio, and other strange anomalies in both Long Covid and ME/CFS. This particular ICEPT is being researched by Dr David Systrom at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in collaboration with Harvard University
Dr Systrom also found ‘Pre load failure’ in these patients. (The failure of the heart to preload enough blood for the following beat) don’t worry that doesn’t kill you
Note if you are very unwell don’t do the ICEPT test because it can make you very unwell. As induces a ‘Post Exertional Malaise’ crash

THE question. How many who have long covid are also jabbed vs those who had the virus but no jabs?
I just heard testimony here on youtube under Senator Rennick given before The Australian Congress by a pfizer spokesman. This spokesman stated that myocarditis is an AUTOimmune situation. If the jab causes myocarditis, which clearly it is, the spike proteins that the body attacks are in all the organ systems so there will be massive attack. Welcome to a new nightmare.

I believe CHRONIC STRESS is one of the most important factors as to why people develop MCAS, Long COVID, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease, and POTS.
Loss of a Loved One, Divorce, Loss of a Job/Financial Security, a Traumatic Accident or Childhood Event, Surgery, or Athletic Overtraining are all examples of Chronic Stress. A Type-A High Achiever/Perfectionist Personality typically will place healthful activities, such as getting a proper night’s sleep, as secondary to accomplishments.
An acute infection, such as COVID-19, can be merely the Trigger to the complete breakdown of an ALREADY Compromised Immune System from Chronic Stress. Once the breakdown occurs, secondary infections of other viruses (such as Epstein-Barr Virus), bacteria, molds, protozoans, and parasites that were FORMERLY being held in remission will now resurface. There is also little innate Immune System response to stop any NEW infections. The exacerbation of the effects of Environmental Toxins, Autoimmune Diseases, Allergies, and other Comorbidities may further complicate the disease and make it unique to almost EVERY Long Hauler! 🙀
Chronic Stress suppresses the Immune System and Digestion, making it more likely to develop Immune System dysfunctions, such as MCAS, and poor absorption of essential nutrients, leading to deficiencies that can cause issues like Leaky Gut.
A deficiency in B-Complex Vitamins can lead to Leaky Gut as well as a Leaky Blood/Brain Barrier. A leaky BBB will allow pathogens and foreign proteins into the Brain, where they may cause inflammation, leading to Disautonomia, Brain Fog, Loss of Memory, Headache, Depression & Anxiety, Chronic Fatigue, and other neurological symptoms.
Deep Sleep is the ONLY Time the waste products of inflammation and normal metabolism are removed from the Brain, so reduction of Chronic Stress to allow a Good Night’s Sleep is important for treatment. Typically, a Change in Attitude is required to reduce Chronic Stress and disrupt the endless repetition of negative thoughts.
LifeWithKyle discusses how he uses Meditation to Calm his Nervous System and diminish Long COVID symptoms during a relapse. He offers Guided Meditations SPECIFIC to Long COVID.
Fasting is a good Lifestyle Change to help restore integrity to the Gut and Blood/Brain Barrier. It gives the intestines a rest from Digestion, allowing energy to be focused on Repair. Fasting is a Stress on the Body, and like Exercise, should be approached gradually. You should start with Time-Restricted Eating, gradually reducing the time of your Daily Feeding Window until you are comfortable eating within an 8 hour or less Feeding Window. From there, you can attempt a 24 hour or Multi-Day Fast. Don’t be discouraged if you end a Fast early. You can try again on another Day.
Fasting will be easier if you follow a Healthy Low Carb, Whole Food Ketogenic Diet. Dr. Eric Berg can show you how to begin. Eliminating Grains and consuming Nutritional Yeast, a great source of B-Complex Vitamins, along with supplementing Vitamin B1, will help to restore Intestinal and Blood/Brain Barrier integrity.

Some people have found Corticosteroids, such as Prednisone, can offer relief from Long COVID symptoms. The problem is Prednisone can produce bad side effects. Dr. Berg offers a natural alternative in the video, “A Natural Prednisone or Steroid Protocol.” It involves vitamin D3, B5, and C in large doses. It is claimed to help calm down inflammatory immune responses without the deleterious side effects of Prednisone.

Many Long Haulers are fit, Elite Athletes - UltraMarathoners, Triathletes, Competitive Bikers, Rock Climbers, etc. I’ve heard several Doctors who treat Long COVID patients remark on this fact. I propose CHRONIC STRESS is the Root Cause of Long COVID, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease, MCAS, and POTS.
Chronic Stress may result from Loss of a Loved One, Divorce, Loss of a Job/Financial Security, a Traumatic Accident or Childhood Event, or a Surgery. But People fail to recognize Athletic OVERTRAINING is also a Chronic Stress.
When you Exercise, the Muscles, Tendons, and Bones of your Body are broken down. Your Body repairs and strengthens them during the Recovery Period to adapt to the increased Stress. However, if you start Exercising again before Complete Recovery, you just continue the breakdown of your Body, leaving you susceptible to disease and injury.
The Chronic Stress of Overtraining suppresses the Immune System and Digestion, leading to Immune System dysfunction and Nutritional Deficiencies, due to lack of proper absorption. Though the Overtraining Athlete appears Fit on the outside, it masks internal problems. The acute COVID-19 infection is merely a Trigger, resulting in the complete breakdown of an ALREADY Compromised Immune System.
Your typical Overtraining Athlete is often a Type-A Overachiever/Perfectionist Personality who forgoes getting a Full Recovery or a Good Night’s Sleep in pursuit of Athletic Achievement. These are also the ones who are susceptible to Long COVID.
The key to maximizing athletic performance is to become a Student of Recovery after Exercise, maximizing Deep Sleep, and following proper nutrition to Optimize the Immune System, and keep Blood Glucose and Insulin at lower, more optimal levels.
