  • So-called "long Covid" is turning out to be a devastating condition for an incredibly large number of individuals around the world. It's been estimated that as many as 200 million people globally are suffering from this condition. And as many as 30 percent of Covid-19 survivors still experience symptoms long after their acute illness has passed, with cognitive and mental health problems especially prominent.
From the publisher of Clearing the Fog: For long haulers, this struggle with Long Covid has irrevocably changed their lives. Many have lost their ability to work, attend school, and look after their children. They often feel misunderstood and dismissed by others. Their once-full lives are now filled only with doctors' appointments that seem more and more futile.
In Clearing the Fog, neuropsychologist Dr. James C. Jackson offers people suffering from Long Covid and their families a roadmap to help them manage their “new normal.” Focusing on cognitive impairment and mental health issues, he shows readers:
    - The ways in which they can manifest and disrupt
    - Suggestions for how and when to seek professional evaluations
    - Science-based treatment options and strategies,
    - Information on navigating health care systems and disability insurance
    - Validation and hope as patients wrestle with their new diagnosis
In addition, Dr. Jackson shares his own experience with chronic illness, relating to long haulers with vulnerability and compassion.
Through moving stories as well as hands-on guidance, Clearing the Fog will help long haulers understand their current situation while offering multiple ways to address it, make sense of it, and move through it with the goal of thriving instead of merely surviving.
In this interview with Dr. Jackson, we will explore the following questions, and a lot more:
What do we know about the cognitive and mental health consequences of Long Covid?
What areas of cognition are impacted in Long Covid survivors?
How does cognitive impairment impact the daily lives and the careers of those with Long Covid?
What treatments have you found effective for Long Covid survivors and what does the research say?
What do we know about the benefits of cognitive rehabilitation?
Are there ways to leverage the neuroplasticity that Long Covid survivors have?
What role does acceptance play in coping effectively with Long Covid

@dollmck8360... please if you can find my comment on this video, Exactly what I said getting blown off, not taken seriously, played the charade of running numerous tests and not getting any answer... they don't want to listen to patients that have researched this matter and I offered this to them... they cut me off because they know this elementary stuff from their medical training... and I have 8 minutes and 37 seconds left for my appointment... just enough time to tell me my LDL is high and I need Meds plus a HTN med because my BP is high...
And I agree, Gaslighting, AKA, misleading the public under the color of authority, i.e. begin a medical care provider, doctor, etc. should be a crime if you can prove that it was willfully intended... hard to prove that... they back each other up and hide behind "It was the best information we had at the time" Nothing will come of it... We've played this game before... sadly... sigh! They should trace it back and make those ppl accountable at the very least.

Saw the Neurophysiologist last week. My memory is getting worse. She told me studies find memory issues are not a symptom or from LC. She THINKS we all have undiagnosed depression causing the memory issues. I don’t believe her one bit. 2 years suffering and it’s just getting worse. I feel like I’m suffering from Dementia. Never had memory issues before Covid.

I don’t know what Studies your Neurophysiologist is reading, but EVERY Long COVID Study I’ve read lists Brain Fog among the Top 5 Symptoms of Long COVID. Conversely, I can’t recall a single Study on Depression that lists BrainFog as a top symptom. 👉 I find it EASY to believe most Long Haulers are Depressed after all the gaslighting they’ve experienced from the Medical Community.

However, I also believe there is a CRITICAL overlooked MENTAL Component to Long COVID Recovery. Raelan Agle is CFS/Long COVID VIP who also found that an Attitude Adjustment was one of the first most important steps to Recovery. You must BELIEVE you can Heal and set your Intention to do so. She also offers tricks to help you Sleep Better from the viewpoint of a person who recovered from CFS.
LifeWithKyle is a good example of Meditation techniques specifically for recovery from Long COVID. He meditates at the onset of symptoms during a relapse to ACCEPT them and not be FEARFUL of the reoccurrence. This reframe calms his nervous system and avoids inducing a Fight or Flight Response that would exacerbate symptoms.

Learn about Thiamine which is vitamin B1. It is for your nerves... the same nerves that go from your brain to you toes!! The first dose was miraculous. He slept t h e whole night.
Sleep allowed healing. The sleep was improved the whole time . Then insomnia and fatigue started getting gradually worse again for almost a year.. so bad.
      No sleep.
Got a couple doses wondering if it would do the same.. yes! Two doses ..two nights of sleep.
Believe it may gave to do with the anti-inflammatory effects so we are going to see if low dose LDN has same effect.

Me: Long-Covid for 3 1/4 years as of June 2023.
"BRAIN FOG". This is actually a Very Good description of it. It literally FEELS like a fog when you are trying to think. My brain even sometimes felt like it was floating, swimming, inside my skull. I was trying to add 2 + 2 and couldn't remember if the answer was 5 or 6 (I guess the number 4 didn't exist).
I am an older, high-functioning autistic person, who has overcome many of the issues of autism. When I was a child, I often felt a milder version of this fog while I was trying to learn something. My brain just wouldn't get into gear. The clutch was slipping, and it would take 1 - 15 minutes before something would engage to let me continue. I'd be struggling every second of those minutes trying to THINK! - all the while wondering why I couldn't. The adults around me would be almost yelling at me to "Think!". As a child, I also sometimes put the tableware in the fridge, or almost dumped the entire full container of butter in the trash right after that. My entire life I have struggled with burning things on the stove. Covid has just made all of this a lot worse. Worse, I can't smell when something is burning. I've destroyed almost all of my cookware during these last 3 years. Only one steel pot and 2 steel pans have survived.
VIDEO GAMES: Yes, they help a great deal! Luckily, I had already been using video games as part of my pain management system for back injuries that have kept me in constant pain for almost 40 years now. The only caveat is that you have to make sure the game does not trigger depression. Many video games have dark themes and graphics and should be avoided.
Anyway, having a good game that is FUN enough to fully engage your brain is extremely helpful for cognitive functioning. City-building survival games are very good for math, since you have to use it constantly, although quite a few games require some mathematics. One game was constantly reminding me that I did my math wrong. I used the game to tell when it was safe to pay bills or not. When I stopped messing up so frequently on the game, I knew my brain was finally healing. My balance was improving at the same time - I wasn't falling as often. My short-term memory was also improving (Long-term memory was not affected nearly as much, and the memories are coming back. Short-term memory is usually the issue with autistic children, as well.). It's such very slow progress that I know it will probably take quite a few years to fully recover, if that is possible.
"SPLITTING TASKS INTO SUBTASKS" is a technique also used for teaching autistic children. If they are still having trouble, try to break those subtasks into even smaller subtasks. I'd been teaching autistic children for about 20(?) years before Covid, so I have a lot of experience with this.
The hardest part is the setbacks. I can have a very good day and feel fairly good and get several tasks done and forget how sick I am. Then the next 3 - 5 days can be horrible. It's very discouraging. The 3 year mark was especially difficult - it signaled the possibility that long-Covid might be a permanent issue for the rest of my life. Nevertheless, I will continue to hope for better.

I guess she means Low dose Naltrexone. It's said to be somewhat immune modulating when taken in low doses (from under 1mg to maybe up to 5mg?) but for that use it's not researched very well, so it's prescribed only off-label.
My ME/CFS-specialized doctor also recommended me to give it a try. I alredy have the Naltrexone here but am cautious to take it (also I'm taking Kratom for my heavy pains, so I'm not shure how it will react together, although it's said to be okay if taken below 1mg...but who knows).

I noticed Cognitive function right away around September 2022. Everything you said were symptoms: Matched. Of course I went to PCP and they thew every test over $1K spent they ruled out, and had no answers... I cleared my fog with NAC and Fish Oil, low carb-ish diet... I bounced back after 4 months, gradually getting better... I know that's not typical, I feel blessed it worked in my place.
Question: do people with this have a high LDL? My total Cholesterol went up to 345 (fasting) and they wanted to treat me with statins that have a side-effect of memory loss, I refused... I don't need more of that!!! I wonder if LDL is necessary to heal the brain from the oxidative stress. What about high BP?
The medical establish wants to immediately treat these, but the HTN could be caused by the ACE-2 and the LDL is building the brain. If I started all those drugs assuming they are treating these as problems in isolation, might be holding back progress in healing the brain function.

Takes just a moment but it works wonders for keeping you stabilized so you don't get scattered. When I put things down or away I tell myself that I am putting my keys here on top of my books. It is helpful to always put things away in the same spot.

Never the less I had covid 3 times ( brought by member of the family that were not careful) and stayed with important long covid symptoms as hearth and breathing problems , red toes syndrome and vertigo . 🙏🏻🌷✨🙏🏻

Smh I'm sick of ppl saying it just jab injured ppl, cuz it's both! The spike is the issue, so yes it's goin to be worse with the jabs cuz the body then makes the spike over and over in order for ur body to then mount an immune response

Well, this may be exactly what some need. But, I think it overlooks the intractable PEM the keeps so many from regaining cognitive function. My background is in biology and totally believe in neuroplasticity. However, there are apparently some ongoing conditions that don't allow cognitive recovery. Im more, autoimmune, vascular, mitochondria dysfunction...
I 've had the testing and OT, SLP/ Cog rehab. I am a master of coping strategies. LOL. But, brain training, brain exercises, and physical activity, all leave me with less ability for my own life tasks. There is clearly an ongoing cause, not just an injiuy that happened and is over. I do the pacing, which is the most valuable skill (from OT ). But, it hasn't been enough to make improvements in the PEM / PESE that limits my cognition.
for so many of us. long - covid is not a brain injury that happened andis now over allowing us to simply retram our brains. We are getting by with ongoing biological condition.
All the best brain training can't do much when there is ongoing biological dysfunction.
All the coping strategies are helpful. But, the world moves so much faster than my brain and I am left so far behind. I can't keep up with normal daily living. Like is passing me by. Everything is challenging, at best. When you add up all the challenges, so little can happen or get done, and I'm reffering to the basics like cooking, showering, take out trash, do laundry, renew my foodstamps and health Insurance. Oh, and the doctors appts - - even can't do as much of these as I really need to. The more I do physically and cognitively, the less I'm able to do cognitively. Always have to choose what's important. Sometimes it does mean I choose something like responding to this video, in hopes that doctors and people may understand that long - covid isn't just an Injury that is over and you recover. Glad some people have recovered, but, for so many this is more like a chronic disease.
me: NO depression or anxiety. In some cognitive areas I'm in bottom 2 and 5% of function for my age and education. It is coping statangies, esp technology, that puts me in MCI instead of dementia.
I'm 3+ years in. My doctor expects I'll he eligible for disability. But, when do I do that application. And, that generally long exhausting process? It means a have to sacrafice something else, like cooking, grocery shopping, laundry, showering, calling my mom, dong my taxes. With PEM, sacrifices can be days or longer of less ability to do everything. It can even mean days of utter exhaustion.
long-covid is proving to be chronic illness not just an injury like TBI.

It sounds like we are in the same boat. See the comment I left just a minute ago. I, too can barely function to do basic daily tasks. Feeding myself is top priority. Then dishes. There is so much cleaning that I usually can't do. I racked up a lot of debt before I was finally feeling good enough to apply for Food Stamps. Here's hoping we can both recover within the next year or two.

Thank you for sharing! I thought I was getting dementia, or maybe had a brain tumour because I have fallen a few times. I was sick for approx 3 weeks after each vaccination. It felt like a really bad flu each time. I believe I had 2 plus a booster, but I can’t recall now. I’ve never felt right since. I got Covid in January 2023, and was in bed for 3 months with severe fatigue after the acute Illness. I have read lately that if you had a long reaction to the vaccine, or long Covid, it is not advised to get a booster. I do believe in vaccines, but Covid vaccines have not agreed with me at all.

@@Deborah-dg7ni NRF1 and NRF2 are transcription factors, proteins, that activate genes related to specific pathways or molecular processes. Specifically, they turn on important genes that are involved in making new mitochondria and the induction of oxidative phosphorylation, a major metabolic pathway in the energy-generation process. As we age, virtually every aspect of our mitochondrial health deteriorates. NRF1 and NRF2 target mitochondrial health. They are in charge of mitochondrial turnover, which means that as the mitochondria begin to degrade, they take out the damaged ones and replace them with healthy ones.

  • @andrewstrakele6815
    @andrewstrakele6815 Před rokem +3

Though this Comment focuses mainly on Endurance Athletes with Long COVID, it lists many Lifestyle Changes that ANYONE can do NOW to start your Recovery. These Lifestyle Changes can also help to PREVENT Long COVID.
Many endurance athletes have contracted Long COVID. I believe it has to do with Overtraining and a Type A Personality where you have an attitude of working through any weakness or illness with more training. Training is Good, but there can be TOO MUCH of a Good Thing.
Exercise breaks down your muscles, and it is a Stress on the Body. When your Body recovers over time, it rebuilds the muscles to be stronger. If you start training again before your Body can fully recover, you are creating a Chronic Stress that is deleterious to your Health. It depletes your Body of Essential Nutrients critical to proper Immune System function as well as downregulating the Immune System.
There may be some other Stressful Event, such as Loss of a Loved One, Loss of a Job, Loss of Financial Security, Divorce, a Traumatic Accident or Surgery, etc. All of this causes Chronic Stress, and Long COVID is the end stage result with a complete breakdown of the innate Immune System, triggered by an acute COVID-19 infection of an ALREADY Compromised Immune System.
It may allow other secondary infections of other viruses (such as Epstein-Barr Virus) to come out of remission. Over 90% of the world’s population has EBV in remission. An EBV infection has many of the same symptoms as Long COVID, so you can see the extent of the problem. Secondary infections from other bacteria, molds, protozoans, and parasites may appear with Long COVID. Autoimmune Diseases, Allergies, and Toxicities to Environmental Toxins can complicate the disease.
The First Step is you must Believe you can Heal, and set you intention to do so. You will do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to Recover. The next step is to reduce Stress. Since Exercise typically leads to a relapse, you will need to work on changing your Mindset. Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of NOW” can offer such a reframe if you dwell on negative events that occurred in the Past or you believe can occur in the Future. It describes how he recovered from Chronic Depression and eliminated destructive cycles of negative thought by focusing on the Present. The Past is History and the Future is a Mystery. They cannot affect the Present. The only time you can Choose to make Changes to your Life is in the NOW.
You can also Choose to be Happy to reverse Chronic Stress. Studies show Happiness will boost the Immune System. Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar has a video on Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness, where he lectures on how to increase Happiness and Gratitude in your Life.
Meditation is another important way to reduce Chronic Stress. There is a wealth of info online discussing how to meditate and providing Guided Meditations.
You will want to become a Student of Good Sleep Habits. Deep Sleep is the ONLY time the waste products of normal metabolism and Inflammation are removed from the Brain. You’ll want to learn how to PREPARE for a Good Night’s Sleep and maximize your Deep Sleep. WITHOUT PROPER SLEEP, nothing else you do for Recovery will be effective.
Breathwork is the most gentle way you can start to move back into Exercise. The Physiological Sigh is a Breathwork technique that can reduce Anxiety, slowing the Heart and slowing quick, shallow breathing. Dr. Andrew Huberman has some good videos on this technique. Wim Hoff also is well known for his Breathing Techniques.
You will want to become a student of Recovery after Exercise as you GRADUALLY Pace your way back to getting physically active. NO MORE OVERTRAINING. Overtraining PREVENTS you from achieving maximum performance besides causing Long COVID. When you Recover from it and Train CORRECTLY, you will set new Personal Records. 👍
You will want to become a Student of Proper Nutrition to know the most nutrient-dense foods to eat in a Low Carb, Low Inflammatory, Whole Foods Ketogenic Diet with Intermittent Fasting to manage Blood Insulin and Blood Glucose at lower, more optimal levels. In addition to Intermittent Fasting,, you’ll want to do occasional 3-5 day Prolonged Fasts to stimulate Autophagy and completely reset your Immune System. I suspect, but have no evidence, that Autophagy from Prolonged Fasting may help those who genetically have problems breaking down the Fibrin “sludge” in their Blood as well as the Inflammatory SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein.
You will need to become a Student of Supplementation to know how to correct the deficiencies of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in order to Optimize your Immune System. Dr. Eric Berg offers a FREE Course on this very subject.

Raelan Agle is another CFS/Long COVID VIP who also found that an Attitude Adjustment was one of the first most important steps to Recovery.

I believe Long COVID, as well as the other similar chronic dysfunction of the Immune System diseases - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Fibromyalgia, Post-Lyme Disease, MCAS, and POTS - are Metabolic in nature, result from Lifestyle Choices and are reversed by making new Lifestyle changes. Heart Disease and Autoimmune Diseases are also Metabolic in nature.
Overtraing PREVENTS you from achieving your maximum physical potential. When you’ve recovered and train correctly, allowing your Body to fully recover and adapt before your next training session, I believe you will set new Personal Records.
Long COVID is a multi-factor disease, and FASTING is a multi-factor recovery solution. I believe it is underutilized in the treatment of Long COVID (as well as the PREVENTION of Long COVID) and one of the best ways to reset your Immune System. 👍 As with Exercise, you should Pace yourself and ease into it gradually. Dr. Eric Berg has a good video on Intermittent Fasting for Beginners.
