  • As is the case in every creative industry, sometimes it pays to do things before they are cool. Bucking trends, pushing boundaries and earning millions, the likes of Tomb Raider and Animal Crossing could definitely be described as games that were ahead of their time. In fact, here are ten of them!

    "Elite" should be number one on this list. It was the very first 'open world' game, and was so far ahead of anything else at the time that it made other games look like what current gen games would make Atari 2600 games look like.
    Also a personal shout-out goes to "Dungeon Master" on the Atari ST. It is the Grandaddy of first person RPG's.

      The PS1 (and N64) was a teething period for polygon based games, especially in hindsight. DKC was kind of the zenith of 2 platforming. With the thrill of experiencing polygons at home for the first time near forgotten, I think the whole package of DKC is now the more impressive out of the contemporary releases of the time.

      For consoles especially the 16 bit snes yes it's leaps and bounds ahead of their time. But compared to PC games not even close doom 1 and 2 had come out before it even system shock 1 which was a technical marvel at the time with good voice acting and mind blowing graphics for the time had come out then. Don't get me wrong I love dk country especially the 1 and 2 the new ones are great too but they were only ahead of their time compared to the other 16 bit consoles and early ps games like Rayman which is Impressive that it could beat thev 32 bit systems for a short time.

    • @jackjude
      @jackjude Před 2 lety +1

      @@joeywalker2061 DK country is more visually impressive and satisfying than Doom on the PC, especially in retrospect. It's 'only' a 2D platformer, but it's the high-water mark of the genre ; it's acheives what it sets out to do and masters it's aesthetic. Early 3D fps shooters are more ambitious games, but rather fugly in comparison.

    One of System Shock's innovations that I think still hasn't been matched elsewhere was its unique difficulty system. It broke down gameplay into four subsets - combat, puzzles, mission and the cyberspace sections - and gave each its own range of difficulty settings. Don't like puzzles? Drop it to 0 and every security panel or wiring puzzle solves itself in one click. Love puzzles? Whack it up to max and they'll become real headscratchers.
    Even the game's main story worked this way, with higher settings adding additional objectives and the highest giving the game a hard cap time limit of 7 hours.
    The only downside was that you had to set the levels at the start of the game. Once you were into the story, the only way to change the difficulty levels was to start from scratch.

      I'd argue it's not a 'role playing' game, though it includes a few elements that were common in Dungeon crawlers of the time. Most western dungeon crawlers or 'WRPGs' (Most of which I don't consider rpgs.) since the early 80s had been first person up until that point anyway and Dungeon crawlers since the late 80s had been experimenting with real time elements. It wasn't the first of them to be first person, be real time and include firearms either.

    One game that was way ahead of its time in terms of unique features that still aren't done today is the original Perfect Dark (2000). Here are some of the main things it did that no or few other FPSs have done since: unique secondary functions, MP bots with custom difficulty levels *and* behavior, AI commands including objective-based ones in MP, unlockable cheats that can drastically change how the game feels/plays, co-op with a human or AI ally, counter-op where a second player plays as one enemy at a time, objectives that require thought and exploration (not just "go to the nav point and press the action button," "kill everyone," or "fight off waves of enemies"), an explorable hub area that has things added as you progress through the game, always having full control over your character (no forced tutorials, slow walking, forced turret or on-rails sections, QTEs, unskippable/interactive cutscenes, etc.), highly satisfying and fair mission enemy AI that has varied reactions and reacts to being shot, the ability to disarm most targets, tons of unlockables that aren't limited to MP, manual gadget use with occasional opportunities to be creative (such as distracting a guard with a floating camera or using x-ray glasses to shoot enemies behind doors with a piercing weapon), the ability to keep playing a mission if you fail an objective (for fun/practice; progress doesn't count), cutscenes that are not only skippable but can strategically be skipped at certain times since enemies move while they play, a cutscene viewer that lets you view all cutscenes individually or in a row like a movie, weapons unlocking across modes regardless of where you first encounter them, so many MP options that there are different menu options depending on how many you want and an option to save and load setups, challenges as even more content with unlocks for beating certain numbers of them, preset and custom MP weapon sets for pickups with challenges and presets having their own sets on top of those, hit detection that's so good that you can shoot dropped mines/grenades and rockets mid-flight, rotating 3D gun models and two different descriptions of each gun (most games don't have in-game weapon descriptions, and some don't even let you see the name of your current gun at will), the ability to shoot out individual lights, etc.

    • @7dayspking
      @7dayspking Před 3 lety +1

      One's a small feature and the other was by no means 'advanced' in Chrono trigger in the mid 90s! There were other games in the 90s with actual branching stories, numerous paths that stretched the length of the game (instead of being instant game overs that cut the game short.) and that tallied player's actions or decisions throughout the game and chose one of a number of endings at the game's actual end.
      It's not like Chrono trigger was highly influential in or started any sort of trend of games with 'multiple endings'.

    I'm surprised you mentioned quick time events on Shenmue. Ignoring that Dynamite Deka (or Die Hard as it was called in the States, since Sega had the license so they literally just slapped it on the game) which had it prior, I'd say something like Dragon's Lair actually kicked it off. I mean, the game is nothing but that. Plus, it was on a disk, so even if you hated the QTE, you still wanted to play it to see how events would play out. Considering the story was nothing more than just a knight saving the princess, that must've been high praise for the developer.
    Also, we'd be remiss not to mention Winback or Kill.Switch for doing cover-based 3rd person shooters. Winback did it a decade (and Kill.Switch half of one) before Gears of War would come along and do it justice and kick the trend into popularity.

The NTSC version was night and day for me and I 100%ed the game multiple times, I would do the whole game with just a sniper rifle or a single PPK for a challenge. I even taught a non-gamer friend to beat it so he could impress[cough embarrass cough] his nephews. I do not mean to come off as a troll pointing out any inconsistencies in the time, effort, and research that the creators put into this video (which is great as always!), but I've got to say something. The EGM quote used to make the point that Harvest Moon wasn't a hit, or very warmly welcomed by the general public, was used so far out of context that it's meaning was literally reversed from the way it was written. The very next sentence (and the entire following review), makes it clear how pleasantly surprising it was for such a concept to become so unique and enjoyable. I mean, even the game the author compared it to was none other than Zelda! No self respecting gamer out there would liken a game to the masterpiece that is (any) Zelda unless it was something special! 🙃

    @TripleJump, I am mad that you forgot a far more influential game than Tomb Raider on your list and that is Battlezone, you know, the game that was developed by Atari, as well as some people with some actual rank within the military forces of the USA. Why I am making this argument is that Battlezone is, essentially, the starting point of the whole first person shooter genre and it is also one of the few first person shooter games that is not only in the arcade, but that it also does not go on rails, unlike most arcade shooter games. Yes, Battlezonewas Doom and Wolfenstein 3D before either one of those franchises ever existed. Also, as for System Shock 1 and 2, those games are actually, as well as technically, considered as spiritual sequels to the BioShock franchise, as they occur in the future rather than the past, as is the case for the BioShock games, despite ironically being made far before the BioShock games in real life.

    • @7dayspking
      @7dayspking Před 3 lety

      Isn't battlezone from the late 90s? I also think your associatiom with early 'first person' action games being on rails derives from console gaming. Shooters weren't designed on rails on the PC like they were on the consoles.
