The Chinese Communist Party has lot of factionalism and difference of opinion, it continues to draw lessons from the Tiananmen Square incident of 1989 even now - former Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale tells Shekhar Gupta in ThePrint ‘Off The Cuff’ while discussing his new book, Tiananmen Square: The Making Of A Protest.

Mr Gokhale has vast experience in Foreign Ministry and spent years dealing with China
China being very complex and difficult country to deal with, Indian Government should appoint him and create a special folio to deal with China under Gokhale”s leadership and use his knowledge and expertise

But there’s also a powerful strain of nationalism and pride in China’s reemergence on the world stage, as well as concern about what the US really thinks about China - whether it truly wants to welcome China into the club of powerful countries or wants to hold it back.

The Chinese are miffed precisely because Modi stood up to them and did not stop the construction of border infrastructure. A case may be made that the MEA needs to be much more proactive and actively build an alliance of democracies against China, say with regard to 5G, alternate supply chains for some products and suchlike, and that because the MEA is not doing so it is just torpid, but by no means is Modi himself cowering before China.
