- The CD50n is an all round digital music player that does CD playback, streaming, internet radio, DLNA playback, Apple Airplay 2 and even HDMI ARC with CEC support. It can be used in combination with an amp but also has pre-amp functions and thus can be used with power amps and active speakers

I love this channel. It feels like something you’d see on PBS at 2am or an instructional video from the 80’s. I love the aesthetic and the information. There’s a wam, comforting feeling about it. Very good presentation.

Thanks as always @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel for a stellar review. My understanding is that the device is Roon Tested, but not Roon Ready. As far as I can tell, this means that your Roon core can still see the unit and stream to it. However, since Roon's software, RAAT is not encoded in the unit, certain functions (DSP, volume control, etc.) may not be functional. Apparently Roon Tested is a precursor to full Roon certification, so it might still happen! Maybe with a firmware upgrade in the future.
There is NO Roon playback in any shape or form. I’m sorry but Roon is not mentioned in the manual at all nor is is visible in Roon Setup Audio.
I had asked Marantz whether Roon certification was on the cards and they replied as follows: "Hello,
While the CD50n is not labeled as Roon Ready, it is a Roon Tested device." You can see their response in the Q&A section. Of course, based on your comment, your core did not see the CD50n, so clearly something is amiss! Either way, thanks for your response!
So in terms of sound quality, I understand that this is at a higher level than the Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition as a streamer and DAC!

Excellent follow-up to the 50 review! Great to see such a large-scale manufacturer as Marantz making terrific products like this available to the general population at reasonable prices. I already own a marantz CD player. Would be nice your thoughts on how the 50/50n combo stands up against the 40n (without considering the cd section of the 50n). Selling my separate CD player would be an option.
The streamer function in the separates is clearly superior to that of the Model 40n. Apart from the fact that it also has a CD player.

Hi Mr. Hans. I'm still confused about going for the Model 40n (Made in Japan) and the Model 50 w/ CD 50n (made in Vietnam), I know it's what's inside that counts, but does the Model 50 really sound's better than the Model 40n? If so, is it only because of the separates factor? Hope to get your feedback, I discovered your channel researching Marantz new products line, I really enjoy your channel, very informative, good job!
Thanks for your feedback, the 50's definitely are a beautiful combo. My hesitation comes from the fact that I have an older CD6005 and could possibly save money w/ the Model 40n, I'll try to sale some older gears on market place so I can splurge with the new Marantz product line ;) @@yippie6862
The amps ale almost the same (as amp). The difference is in the digital part. The CD50n is clearly better than the digital part in the Model 40n.

I have a Node X connected to my Anthem AVM90, but I am considering moving over to this. I don't really understand Roon or know if I need it. I like the Bluesound App. Eventually the Anthem will be Roon ready, would that matter with this piece?
If you're not interested in Roon, it doesn't matter.

If you connect a TV to it's HDMI port, and want to use the TV remote to control volume, then you'll have to use the CD50n in preamp mode? Or will it automatically go into preamp mode?
It doesn't need to be in pre-amp mode, It does it too when in cd-player/streamer mode. The amp than does the volume control by using the tV remote .
But I guess this only happens if you use the Model 50, not another integrated amplifier.
Also, I ignore why the CD50n manual states: “While using HDMI ARC for TV connection it is highly recommended for the best volume control experience to use the variable output from this unit to connect to the amplifier.” But later, in the “Tips” section of the manual, it also says that for best sound performance “You can stop the circuit that outputs audio from the analoq audio output terminals (VARIABLE) of this unit. This prevents the audio signal output from the analog audio output terminals (FIXED) from being affected. Set "Variable Out" to "Off" in the setup menu. (p. 98)”.
Maybe TV and best sound are just incompatible, but I am a bit confused.

We can't
you can use a separate streamer and connect it to the usb input. It can be as cheap as raspberry pi running RoPieee. That's like $150-200 with a case that can be hidden somewhere behind proper equipment :) This, of course, is nothing but a crutch and not very elegant at that. I am myself hesitating whether to buy this unit or go for separate components and Roon incompatibility is one of the reason I am hesitant. However, based on this review (and others as well) it seems like it is worth buying even just as a DAC and a CD player
@IgorIsUa but with a cheap Roon endpoint comes a polluted digital signal and thus poor audio quality 😞

Another fantastic video Hans, thank you. Hans, could you do a video on whether CD transports actually sound better than standard CD players used as transports. I only play CD's, using my Marantz CD6005 as a transport. I've always wondered if CD transports really improve sound and are they really worth the extra cost over a CD player used as a transport. Thank you. I hope you get better.
I won't. That's old news. A cd player has to read a few microns wide track of pits of again a few microns at a speed of 5 km/h from a wobbly plastic disc. A good streamer does that from a hard drive or solid state memory and that alone is already so much better. I haven't used a cd-player for donkeys years now. Having said that, some true high end CD-players can sound quite nice.

Yes, disappointing there's no Roon integration. Surely a product of this type from one of the largest hi-fi manufacturers would've had the budget for its inclusion. I would've thought the benefits would outweigh the disadvantages, I would have seriously considered a purchase of both products. Once you have Roon you don't give it up, so I think Marantz miss out on a market group here.
Absolutely. I think Roon is an absolute must for any serious streamer these days.

Model 50 since 40n duplicates the networking function of the 50n.
The separate deliver higher sound quality, cd-player and further the same functionality.
