In this video, I'm going to share my drawer installation process. Obviously, there are MANY ways to install a drawer, so this isn't the only way.
The next video of the series will be finishing up by installing the drawer fronts. However, due to scheduling issues, it may be a few weeks before that last video is posted, so thank you for your patience.

Hi friends! Thanks so much for watching! This is the 3rd part of my 4 part "drawer building series." However, after this one, I have to press the pause button due to some scheduling conflicts and other projects going on in April. I'll be back the first part of May with the 4th and final part--installing the drawer fronts. But I'll be sharing some new projects on the channel between now and then, so be sure to stick around! I appreciate you all and hope you enjoy the video!
Take care of what you need to, and looking forward to part 4 in May.
Finally! Someone who has a sensible method of installing drawer slides.Thank you!
This video cannot get any better. Well done 👏🏻
You go girl, OMG, you're the only person who has provided such perfect instruction on how to do this, I've never built a drawer in my life, and thanks to you I now know how to do it, especially this part with drawer slides, no one has ever explained it from start to finish like this, you're amazing, thank you, thank you, thank you, you are my go to for anything I am looking at building now.
Saturday school with Shara. Im not sure what else you could break down like this but you are very good at teaching, explaining and showing in detail.
I appreciate that! I definitely wouldn’t consider myself a good teacher haha but I am happy to hear these videos are clear and helpful! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you! First time I see complete instructions, and the "why" and "why not to do". Truly appreciated!
I hope this was helpful! Thank you for watching!
This was an excellent tutorial, Shara. You're a good teacher. This is an interesting and useful series. I will definitely be on board for the drawer front lesson. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! I’m sad to have to put the series on hold for a minute but also excited to share some new projects in the coming weeks. I’ll be back with the drawer fronts shortly!
Thanks (teacher) Shara, as a "newbe" I learned a lot. Can't wait for your next "explanation" about drawerfronts.
Haha I never considered myself a "teacher" before 😂 but thank you! I'm glad to hear it was helpful. Thanks so much for watching!
I’m new to building cabinets. This series is AMAZING! Thank you!
So glad you’re enjoying the series! Happy building!
Outstanding. When I have a woodworking shop and new home (being built) in about year, I will be building multiple storage cart/cabinets. Planning the sizing, fitting and installation of these drawers has troubled me. Now I have one great source to use to get it right.
Good morning Shara! This is definitely a great series on cabinet design and the actual build. It’s hard to go wrong if one just follows your simple step by step instructions! I really enjoy your methods because they work! Thanks again and have a great weekend! Please keep on building!
Good morning! I’m glad you’re enjoying the series and find it clear to understand 😅 I hate to have to press the pause button on it for a couple weeks but I’m also excited to share some new projects too. I hope you have a great weekend as well and happy building!
@@WoodshopDiaries …. I’m sure that if you’re excited about the new projects coming up, then we’re all going to really enjoy them too!!!! 😃 👍🏻
Thank you for this series! I’ve learned so much! 😊
I appreciate you watching and am glad to hear you’ve found them helpful!
Wow!!! This is the best set of videos on drawer installation I have ever watched!!! Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to make and upload these!! You have a really great style of explaining and teaching and I now have the cofidence to make some drawers!! 👍👍
That’s amazing to hear. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found the video helpful.
If you’re ever interested in a printable version of the entire series to take with you to the shop for reference-measure, build, install-Ive got it here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.com/products/basic-drawer-printable-building-guide
Really great and includes all of the details a first-timer would need. Thanks!
I hope it’s helpful! Thanks for watching!
I would definitely have to make a scrap spacer. My measurements would never come out consistent. EVER. Thank you for the detailed video. First of its kind I’ve found. You rock!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! Thank you for watching! 🙌
Thank you for showing talent and not doing like others who use T&A. This is good stuff.
I'm glad I found your channel. Installing drawer slides gives me fits ! I really struggle with them. I built 4 kitchen cabinets and put in shelves because I was so nervous about the slides that I wanted for drawers. Now that I watched how you do it, I will be pulling out each cabinet and installing the drawers. Thanks for this tutorial .
Thank you for making this series of videos. Very well explained!
Thank you for this great series and for helping to demystify drawer slides in a very easy to follow video. All of your hard work is greatly appreciated.
I really appreciate that and am happy to hear it is helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you. I’ve always done drawer faces on the outside of the cabinet and about to start a project out of mahogany and doing inside drawer faces. Personally I think it looks better anyway. Thanks for the help! BTW the stored holes on the drawer slides allowing expansion and contraction is also great advice and something I wasn’t thinking of.
You make it look so easy
Always look forward to these every Saturday. Thanks and looking forward to what you come up with next.
Thank you so much! I'm excited to share some new projects in the coming weeks and take a short break from this drawer series! I appreciate you following along!
Excellent work! Love your tutorials - hopefully I will be able to create some cabinets and drawers for my van conversion. Legend!! Keep them coming 😊
Shara thanks a lot for this video, sharing your talent. God bless
Spectacular. Thanks for this series!
Hope it's helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you so much for the video. Just about to finish my drawers. Building the boxes was pretty easy with your way. Thanks again for that. Put putting installing the door slides on an existing cabinet is tricky even with the help of the Greg brackets. I feel like this is my last drawer project. 😅
You are an amazing teacher. Being so patient and explaining each step clearly and completely...that's definitely a strong skill....the force is strong with you :P
Very well explained for the beginner and the long time maker. Your style of delivery makes seemingly difficult projects much easier to accomplish. Well done!!
I really appreciate that! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. Happy building!
Very helpful series thank you!
I really like this series format. Your teaching style is very good. Thank you.
You’re so kind. Thank you!
Beautiful work. Your creative potentail seems limitless 👍👍
Thank you so much for this detailed video!!!!
Oh I’m so late to the party! Thank you for posting this extensive video on drawer slides!!! Spacing the slides stresses me out, makes my brain hurt! I really love the diagrams and animations, they’re honestly so helpful! ❤️❤️
Great work I’m now getting into cabinets installing
Thank you Shara. This detailed series is very helpful.
So happy to hear it! I appreciate you watching!
Loving these series learning videos Shara! I hope you keep them coming!
Thank you so much! So glad you are enjoying them! I'm wanting to start sprinkling in some of these simple "How to" videos between projects. Would love to hear topic suggestions for future videos you'd like to see!
Yes!! Please do this for cabinets as well! 🙏🏻
Have you seen this video? It’s about how to build basic cabinets: How to Build Basic Cabinets--Using ONLY PLYWOOD!
czcams.com/video/j-VEsdM1rdw/video.html
Yes! I loved that this series had the digital drawing with all of the specific measurements! I’d love to know about specific measurements for cabinet doors. How far away from the counter top, how far away from each other, etc. for different layout options!
Thank you for this series! Great help for building drawers for the vanity that I am building. Onto building the doors which I have never built!
So happy this was helpful! I just started a similar series on door building and just shared a video on 7 ways to build a cabinet door. You may find it helpful with your doors!
Awesome tutorial!!! Great teacher 😊, thanks
Thank you so much for the simple and clear instructions! It is always useful to know more than one way to do things. Love and prayers from Aguascalientes, Mexico
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching and I hope you have a great week!
Thank you for this series. Looking forward to your next video...Blessings!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you very much for this video I have been struggling to put together the runner on a flat pack chest of drawers from yesterday. So I gave up and decided to put it aside and pay someone to do the job for me, but I came across your video to day and find it very educational so I will definitely put it together my self, watching from UK.
So happy to hear you found it helpful! 🙌🙌 you got this!
great video. this is the hardest thing for me....getting the slides level and even and drawer working properly. Thank you....
I hope you find this video helpful with that! Thank you!
I like the idea that they don’t all have to be on the drawer bottom, only the applied door fronts have to be aligned. And yes, your hat is cute
Definitely--you could mount the slides anywhere within the drawer front space. Some people like them centered--some people like them at the bottom. As long as the drawer opens and closes, it's all the same haha. I appreciate you watching and hope it was helpful!
So helpful as I will be building cabinets this summer, thank you Shara
You got this! Happy building!
Excellent series, thank you very much.
Greetings from Chile 😁
Shara you had me locked in from beginning to end. You are very talented and I love these tutorials. Have a great weekend. Thanks!
So happy to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you so much! I hope you have a great week!
Great series. Thanks for posting, and thumbs up.
I appreciate you following along! Happy building!
Fantastic, Shara! Thanks a LOT for the tutorial! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you so much! I hope it was helpful. I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great week!
nice drawer building videos. very well explained
Thank you so much for doing this in-depth and detailed tutorial. I am dealing with plinth drawers at the moment and about to install pull out trays(drawers) to my standard kitchen cabinets - this all involves runners. I had no idea what all the different holes were for, and have learnt a lot from this video alone. I am going back to see the first two videos, to ensure I have as much knowledge as possible. I just did a switch over of old standard runners for these ball bearing runners for a set of drawers I have. SURPRISE - It didn't work, because I failed to take into account the measurement of the new ballbearing runners that are much thicker than the basic runners!!! DUH !! 🫣. I had to reverse the whole process and put the old ones back on!! You live and learn..... but if I had seen one of your videos first I might have learnt something before trying that!!! 🤪
Another excellent video!! Thank you for doing this video series 🙂👍🏻
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and hope it's helpful!
Great detailed explanation. Thanks
Thanks so much! Happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Another great video, and explain the steps to a T ! But on a side note i love your hat,cap,Bennie....it is so adorable....
This is a great! I am looking forward to installing the drawer fronts.
Thank you! I’m sad to have to put the series on hold for a couple weeks but excited to share some new projects over the next few weekends!
Well done presentation.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Great tutorial Shara! You do such a good job of explaining everything. Looks like it's still cold there. Hopefully winter will lose it's grip soon and the warmer days will return for good to your area!
Thank you so much! It was cold here while filming--but it warmed up since then...but then it cooled off again haha. I'm hoping in the next week or two we will finally break into the consistently warmer weather--and some sunshine! Hope you have a great and sunny week where you are :)
Thank you for this video.
Very good!!!
Great video full of tips. Slides is the one place I struggle with, but I think that is because my drawer box sizing is 100% correct. (Gotta work on that part too.) Thank you, and until next time... saw safe.
I hope this helps a little with the slide part of the process! Happy building and thanks so much for watching!
My ocd appreciates your very detailed explanations and information lol.👍🏾
Haha I'm glad you enjoy it--and it makes sense. Sometimes I wonder if it makes sense to just me or to everyone else too haha. Happy building!
Awesome!
I like the speed square trick, the edges on the slides are a bit rounded and makes it harder to get an exact measurement :).
Thanks for sharing!
The speed square is a life saver in so many cases! Thanks so much for watching!
Good morning Shara, awesome job. It's always cool to see how others do things. Still love the hat. Looks good on you. 😀
Happy Saturday! I appreciate you watching and hope you have a great weekend!
So helpful. Love your videos :)
Oh, and don’t forget to make a playlist of all four parts, will make a great way to locate all four videos.
Great idea! Yes, I'll have to put a playlist together once I get the fourth one posted and put them all together. Thank you for that!
Well explained
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Belles explications,très pédagogiques,bravo, à bientôt salut Jeannot ⚒😉
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you watching!
Love your content, learned so much. Best looking carpenter on CZcams too 😊
Haha thank you! That's so kind. So happy to hear you enjoy the videos!
Good evening Shara, 3rd video in the series and as usual it was on point, way to go wooohooo 😊. Excellent work 👍🏾, it's a bummer to have a pause on this series but on a good note it will be back in the best month of the year 🤣, so till then be good and be safe. 👋🏾
Thank you so much! Yes, I hated to have to pause, but I'm got to get some new projects out in the coming weeks--some I'm really excited to share! Haha is May the best month of the year? I feel like it's October, but I guess everyone has a favorite 😉😂 Hope you have a great week!
@@WoodshopDiaries 🤣 will be looking out for those projects, have a good week as well.
educational as usual ...
Hope it’s helpful!
@@WoodshopDiaries till now i havent started any drawers project ..lack of confidence and a bit nervous about it i guess
Well done :)
Thanx, ready for number four.........:)
Thanks so much! I'll be sharing it the first part of May!
I like to use round head screws with these drawer slides so there is a lot of surface area holding it down
Great idea!
That’s the next one. I gave been watching the one in hinges. I have hinges for 1 1/4 overlay and wanted to make sure that they were the right size. My face frame is 1 1/2
Good morning! Another great installment in this series. Others have already commented on your excellent teaching style and I have previously as well. What struck me this time around is how much behind (or before) the scenes planning it must take to develop the talking points and the shots to "make it look easy." Well done! If I'm not mistaken, I would think that spacing method #2 (I think you called it the "alternative") would allow the bottom three drawers to interchange, whereas method #1 would not, correct? Lastly - no shop animals 😔 but at least we got the sock monkey hat!🤣
You're so kind! I never really considered myself a teacher haha, but it's nice to know that what I'm sharing is helpful and does make sense! Sometimes I just never know if what I'm saying makes sense to anyone but me 🙈 There is definitely a lot of planning to film things--it's one reason I kind of hate doing it. It's so much for fun to just build vs having to plan out shots and remember to move the camera around. But it is what it is...I'm just glad the videos seem to be useful! And yes, you're right, since the spacing is consistent, that method would allow you to interchange drawers if needed. It was actually really cold (hence the sock monkey hat) when I filmed this so Lucy stayed inside and Bubs was on his heated pad. Hopefully they venture out and into the videos a little more as the weather gets warmer around here--any day now I hope haha!
Thanks so much for this! Makes the whole concept of installing drawers less scary! At 6:01 to 6:40, what 3D software are you using? It seems like a great way to get measurements for a project!
So glad to hear it’s helpful! The software shown here is SketchUp 👍
@@WoodshopDiaries Awesome, thank you!!!
Hi Shara, very thorough thank you for the video. I've built some decent stuff but for some reason drawers and drawer slides always faze me.
Great video. I have been told, the tab where there are the three holes, thye ar made so you can bend the tab a bit to microsoft adjust the slide in case they are too tight and bring the slide in towards the center to align things better. I am not sure if this is true or not.
Thanks so much! I haven't heard that before, but that does make sense that it could be true. Maybe the tab allows the slide to move out a little to place a shim behind it for spacing adjustments? Something to look into!
félicitations sincères Sarah tu travail bien fait avec soin j adore .patrick
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching!
What computer drafting program do you use for projects like the one you used in this video? Thanks for the great videos!
With the top drawer, is the slide and box lifted up with a 1/4" spacer board; or is the box only lifted 1/4" up and the slider is flat on the bottom floor of the opening? Great video!
Just the box. Thanks so much!
Hi Shara. Thanks for the helpful videos. I have found a dresser but it missing one drawer. I would love to make the drawer any tips on that?
Sure! You can make one! I’ve got a four part series on measuring for and building a drawer from start to finish here: czcams.com/play/PLZXlzM3gc_U2VAcejawDXcsSU6pm4PESL.html
You look rather chilly😂
Awesome video as always Shara! Is it personal preference slide location? I don't use slides personally, but I have noticed even in previous builds you tend to keep your slides near the bottom of the drawer.
Thanks so much! Yes, totally personal preference for slide location--I think it's easier and looks nicer (just my own personal preference) for the slides to be toward the bottom. But I know some people like them in the center, too. Functionally, it doesn't really matter.
@Shara Woodshop Diaries I agree I have seen several who place them in the center. The bottom (like you use them) definitely look better to me as well.
I’m building a modified version of this so thanks for the videos! I notice you install the slides pre finishing. Do you just stain around the slides on the inside? Also do you poly the interior?
I just stain around the slides. I typically don’t stain or poly the inside unless it’s going to be seen, so I just apply stain (or paint) around the front edges where necessary.
@@WoodshopDiaries perfect, thanks!
@@WoodshopDiaries oh wait, one last question 😁 do you poly the drawer boxes?
I don’t. I leave them unfinished
What sketch program do you use?
Will u do a video of making a dovetail humidor for cigars and sale it to me
Somehow I must have missed it, but towards the end when you were installing the drawers in the first method you had the 1/4" plywood and a block for spacing. What can you tell us about the dimensions of the block you used?
Hi! I mentioned that I used a piece of 1/4" plywood and a 2x2 block here. But that isn't universally true for every project. The size spacer blocks you need will depend on the height you made your drawer boxes and the space you need between drawers. In my case, spacing the drawers about 1 3/4" apart worked well, but sometimes you may need only 1" and sometimes you may need 3"...it will depend on your project. Basically you just have to position your drawer box so that it's within your drawer front height--whatever spacing is needed for that, you can combine spacer blocks as needed.
What did you use for your cabinet frames?
Hi! You can find the plans for the table here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/simple-diy-end-table-with-drawers/
What is the software/app you used to draw the plan?
Question - I used the same drawer slider and when i push drawer all the way back and try to pull that time it seems hard to come out like stuck and then i have to apply good amount of power to pull it out, please advise?
Hi! This could be caused my several things. Check to make sure your drawer is square and properly sized and that your slides are installed square. Often this is caused by the drawer being too large or too small putting pressure (either pushing or pulling) on the slides against the side panel it’s installed to.
After everything is installed, I can't figure out why some of my drawer slides won't slide smoothly. Slides are lined up, side panels parallel, and drawer box is 1" smaller than the opening, but they're so stiff when I push them in. Is there a video on how to diagnose this? Maybe i did something wrong but not sure how to check if maybe it's the slides or should the box be more than 1" for more flexibility?
It could be a lot of different things. It’s hard to say without looking at it. Could be that the cabinet or drawer isn’t square (I’d say that’s the most likely). It could be that one slide is slightly off square from the other (maybe one tilts up at the back and one tilts down), it could be there is debris in the slides, it could be that your drawer is too big or too small (I know you say you measured it, but did you measure exactly 1” or was it 1/8” off one way or the other? Did you try measuring with another tape measure-your tape could be inaccurate.) it could just be that the slides are defective or bent/damaged.
What size do you make the drawer, compared to the gap for the drawer?
I explain here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-to-measure-and-size-drawers/
@@WoodshopDiaries thanks 👍🏻
how do you determine the length of the slides?
It’s discussed in part 1
Why so many parts for such a small project 😮
I so hope this video helps with that! I know it's a little overwhelming sometimes, but once you get the hang of it, you'll have it :) Happy building!
Shara, I used the drawer slides you recommended on my Home Office project and bought them in quantity per your advise to save a lot of money. I wish I'd seen this video before my installation because your methods seem much easier and more refined than the struggle I went through. Perseverance means never giving up so in the end I have some drawers on ball bearing slides and I'm pretty happy with them. I think anyone starting out should take these instructional video's to heart and follow your methods fairly closely. Recently I sent links to your video's to my Sister 👩as she is always building "stuff" as well. The weather's turned cold again and that is expected to last for a few days. Judging from your hat I suspect the same is true for you. Thanks for Sharing!
My dad always says the best lessons learned are the lessons bought--in either your money or your time. I guess you paid in your time, BUT I bet the next time you install them, it'll be MUCH MUCH easier after learning from the first time! But--I know that was probably frustrating and not a pleasant experience. I appreciate you sharing my videos! It's always nice to know they're helpful :)
I feel like it keeps warming up and cooling back down here--I had a head cold this weekend and I suspect this crazy weather was a factor haha. Can't wait for warmer weather to stay--hopefully soon for both of us!
