- Hey friends, let's wrap up the final part of the drawer building series with the part of the drawer you see most often--the drawer front! It's time to install them and I'm going to show you how.
In this video, I'm sharing the different types and styles of drawer fronts you commonly run into, what to use to secure the drawer front to the drawer box, and 3 ways to properly position drawer fronts while you're attaching them.

Call me sick, but I could definitely see a parody of the Gap Police entering someone's home to check their drawer front gaps. I wouldn't doubt that cabinet makers and installers are guilty of doing this. Thanks for the series.

I recently retired and decided to get back into woodworking. I hadn't been active for 10-12 years--no spare time. Now I have time. I chose a project with drawers and needed a good refresher. I watched all four of your videos--watched some of them multiple times. Very good, clear, and useful information. Thank you. The project turned out well and the drawers were a success. This whole series was really well done. Enough detail and clear explanations (without being overly wordy) that anyone should be able to give it a go! For myself, I do not possess the talent you clearly have in pocket-hole-drilling and drawer-front-mounting that allows you to do those things freehand... my parts always seem to take a walk in relation to each other; I've long since resigned myself to mechanically securing them (your method #2 and/or pin nails). Nice to see Bubs (also no mice in sight!😆)

Hey Shara, I really appreciate how accessible your 4 part cabinet series is. i love that you encourage people to make sketches of the work. Shara, thanks for another informative and entertaining video. The Kreg tools that I have, have worked so well (some took a little practice) that I've developed a respect for anything that company produces. I'm telling you I got a bit excited when I saw you use the drawer front mounting jig. Hmmmm......??? Summer here and I believe I'll be breaking out the sun block products for my yard and garden work (along with the bug repellants). Thank you so much for watching! I’m obviously a big fan of Kreg…they make some pretty handy jigs especially for cabinet making. I wish I had a better example to practice on, but I haven’t built anything with drawers since I got it and I wanted to hurry and wrap up this series and make this video. I’m sure I’ll be using it again in a future video and really get the full benefits of it. But for now, like you, summer is here and I’ve got some outdoor projects to tackle! I have truly enjoyed and learned from this series. I think you do a wonderful job of explaining complex techniques in a clear method. I really liked the method of drilling the hole for the drawer knob to mount the drawer face. I wish I had thought of that myself. I look forward to your next series. Nicely explained! I already started typing a comment to mention the trick with the pilot hole when you did the first drawer, but then of course you showed it 😂
I like Greg's jigs, but this one looks overly complicated and awkward to use.
I really wish I had a better example to show this jig on for this video. But I haven’t built anything with drawers since I got it and I really wanted to wrap up this series. So I just tested it out of a random quick fix. I think if I showed it installing fronts from scratch and from the bottom up (vs the top down), it would make a lot more sense and you wouldn’t see it that way. It’s really pretty simple though…clamp them on the drawer box, add shims, clamp on the front, screw in place. But, obviously, some people prefer different methods for everything. Hopefully I’ll build something else with drawers eventually to try this out again on a whole project (not a quick fix like this) to get the full feel of using it. We will see.

Thank you Shara for these tips and trics. As you might know, men hate reading manuals/instructions so ..... glad there are Shara's 😀in this world. Just one question: when do you Americans switch over to the metric system. As for me (Dutchman) things would be much easier to understand without having to calculate from imperial to metric. Just buy a measuring tape with both (imperial and metric) measurement markings and experiment with metric. I know you grew up with the imperial system but (dear) Shara ...... the metric system is so much easier when you're used to.

I absolutely loved this series. I've made my own drawers before, but I'm never 100% happy with how they've turned out and I struggled with the spacing. the info on drawer fronts and the two ways to do drawer bottoms are gold. I've been woodworking and making just long enough to already know some of this, but the way you put it all together gives me something specific to reference. Now off to see if you've done something similar with cabinet's( building, doors and hanging);-).

Thanks for sharing the drawer building series with us. You gave me many tips that I will use in my little shop. I saw the Glaze in the bottom drawer in this last video. I am hoping that you will do a tutorial on using this product. I'm curious about it, but nervous about trying it for the first time. It's so expensive that I'm afraid that I will make a costly mistake.

I’ve not used it since (these boxes are pretty old now haha) because I kind of hate epoxy 🤣 but it was a pretty simple formula to use and I love that is comes in already tinted colors. As long as you keep temps around 70ish or so and you mix them the right ratio (if I remember right, these are a simple 1-1), it’s nothing to be nervous about!

Very nice video Shara! Just a minor detail. The holes drilled for a screw to pass through without threads grabbing are called “clearance holes,” not “pilot holes.”

Thanks so much for watching! The definition of a pilot hole is: a small hole drilled as a guide for the insertion of a nail or screw, or for the drilling of a larger hole. Maybe “clearance hole” is another term for it. But these are, by definition, pilot holes 😊
I am building closet inset drawers and your tutorial vids have been very helpful. I do have one question to get conformation though.
Do you leave a 1/4 inch over hang of the facial board from the bottom of each drawer?
So happy you find them helpful! Also, the amount the drawer front overhangs the bottom will depend on how the slides and drawer boxes were installed. This amount will vary, so it’s not always any one specific amount.

A slab style (just a flat piece of plywood) is the easiest drawer front I’d say. Just cut it to size and attach it to the drawer.
