It's amazing how you got the character of the pieces with a few simple cuts. Nice job!
Thank you, really appreciate that!
Absolutely stunning! Great job Shaun!
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Great Stuff... I will be following your lead. Thanks for sharing your wood working technics.
Simply splendid. 👍🏾
this is easily one of the best chess boards I've seen yet. The detail captured with a few cuts is second to none.
Really appreciate that! Glad you dig it!
Dude, this is perfect.
I'm building a party shed/greenhouse/shop & wanted to add a large chess set. You're design is exactly what I was I was looking for.
I'm going to do this with 4x4 lumber to get the bulky look I was after.
Excellent work!
Those turned out really nice. Good job.
Fantastic video Shaun. You demeanor and humor are very enjoyable. Keep them coming!
That is good to hear, and I really appreciate that! Thank you!
Looks fab Shaun really finishes of lovely job well done love your videos can not wait for the next 1
Really appreciate it, Mark! Thank you!
Nice work, thanks for sharing.
Shaun, what a great way to finish off this project. Love how clean your style is. After your last video I went searching and found my grandfathers chess set and I’m going to replicate it. You’ve inspired a project for me that continues to remind me of the man who taught me everything I know. Thanks, brother have a great week!
That is awesome! Glad to hear I could be part of the inspiration for something so meaningful, I'm sure it will turn out great! Thanks!
I've always found that limiting oneself boosts creativity - Great set of chess pieces, thanks for sharing!
For sure! It is easy to get carried away with all the possibilities we can achieve with different tools. Thanks for watching!
Loved you pieces design. Congrats
Thank you!
Very talented. I love vids like this. Cuz out there there are a lot of guys saying woodwork and when you see the process .....surprise. CNC machinery. Hand work and tools are the craft. Thanks.
Really appreciate that! I think there are things that make sense to do with a CNC machine, but it is always fun to do stuff by hand or with limited tools. Thanks for watching!
Amazing work! Very ingenious and criative!
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Fantastic work
Thank you!
Love the pieces. Love your Corgi.
Thank you! I will let him know!
Really nice job.
So simple, yet so elegant.
Thank you!
These look great!! I'll definitely model pieces after your designs when I make them next. Love the awesome work you're putting out!!
Awesome! Hope they turn out great! Thanks for watching!
Love them! I made my own set for a vertical board I made that hangs on the wall. Great job!
Awesome, sounds pretty cool! Thanks for watching!
Shaun, thanks for this simple design that any woodworker can make. GREAT looking yet simple for the average woodworker to make. I enjoy your channel, Keep up the great work!
That is exactly what I was going for! Thanks for watching!
Nice Shawn, the cuts around the pieces do add a nice touch.
Yeah, just a nice simple detail.
Absolutely beautiful! I believe this will inspire me in the future.
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. Love the look of the board and the figures. They match perfectly! Greetings from germany!
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Those turned out great! I love how you cut the crowns
Michael Alm I was thinking the same thing. I'll have to remember that little trick
Thanks, man! I'm really happy with how they came out.
I've been trying to figure out how to cut the King's crown.. And you really demonstrated how.. Thanks man!
Great work man. Lovely video too!
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Great work Shaun.
Thank you!
Simple and perfect!
Awesome, that is my favorite way to do things! Thanks!
Wow. I love those pieces. I am absolutely making those. Already thinking of some personal touches but man those a great!! Well done, as usual.
Good to hear! Hope they turn out awesome.
I wasn't sure what to expect from chess pieces made on a table saw but your eye for design really came through. Nicely done Shaun.
Really appreciate that! Thank you!
Dude, what a talent! Great work!
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Its a gorgeous chess set
Okay. Loved the sound track.Reminded me of Dick Dale. The chess pieces were inspirational. I would not copy the design but...
i quite like this , gotta make them lol , nice work they look great easy to make , im in.
Excellent work.
Thank you!
Nicely done. Ill have to try them out
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Great work and design!! I was just looking for an inspiration to make mine
Awesome, glad you enjoyed enjoyed it!
Well done mate, as always!!!!
Thanks, Steve!
I meant to say I love the king and the queen, but I can't decide, I love every piece! Well done Shaun!

They are really cool 😎
Congrats on making the popwood playback top five vids of the week. Keep it up bud.
Oh, nice! I haven't had a chance to watch this week's yet. I'll check it out!
Very cool. Just what I been lookin for.
Awesome, thanks for watching!
I really like the design mate!
Really appreciate it!
Fun build. A few notes: when you cut the top of the queen you rotate 90 degrees. When you cut the top of the king you rotate 180 degrees. Should have been obvious but it took me wrecking a few blanks to figure this out.
Great work ! like Always... this channel is really my favorite ! Good job Shawn from Reunion island (franch island) in indian Ocean !
Wow, Reunion Island! That is awesome, thank you for watching!
i love this! ive often wondered how one could made chess pieces but i wasnt this creative and gave up on the idea. now i want to make these !
Really appreciate it! Give them a shot!
Sweet. Nice video production too.
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
Turned out great!
Thanks, Nate!
That was awesome, Shaun.
Thanks Alfred! Those were fun to make.
Muito bom trabalho,parabens.
Obrigado!
That looks like a really fun project.
It really was!
I love Bauhaus design!
I was reminded of the statues of Rapa Nui by the Knight and Bishop. Nice job!
Oh nice! I hadn't though about that, but I can see what you are saying. Thanks!
This so cool! very minimalistic, have inspired me to design my own version :)
Awesome! Glad it gave you some inspiration. Thanks for watching!
Awesome vid😎
Thank you!
Sooo good, they turned out far better that I could have imagined. If you find you're having issue with the pieces tipping over you can drill out the bottom and glue in some lead weights.
Thanks, Glen! That is a good tip. I made them big enough so that they have a bit of weight to them, but that is something to keep in mind if I ever do a smaller set.
Looks awesome
Thank you!
Awesome man! I swear I have a REALLY similar chess set design on my sketchbook... but still on paper. Now that I saw you making it I just want to build my own too. Great work! It turned out great!
Right on! Definitely go for it, I was really happy with how mine turned out. Thanks for watching!
Will definitely do! Still figuring some tools and the workshop... if you wanna check it out too! Cheers from Brazil! Abraços
Amazing Job, i like it
Thank you!
Woaaa nice job bro
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Sempre Impeccabile - Bravo . Molto Bello -
Grazie!
Nice, I am inspired. Will make my own! Have to make a table saw sled first!
Awesome, glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
I am now finishing the pieces with a spray can lacquer. Any tips on getting the finish into the kerfs?
Eaxily my favorite chess set. Hope i can buy similar one online.
Great video. Rectangular pieces will make it easier if you want to compartments underneath
Totally! That might be an addition down the line. Thanks for watching!
Muito bom!
Very nice Shaun. I thought chess had been done to death, until today. Keep it up.
Happy to hear that, because I kind of thought the same thing when I started. Glad I could bring a something a little new. Really appreciate it!
Nailed it!
Awesome, thanks!
I made a set with a board for my grand daughter for Christmas...I think they turned out great. Thanks for the inspiration. I even made a sled just for making these, with all the marks etc....so I can reproduce them. I stopped your video in many spots and I think I duplicated them pretty good. I wish I could post a pick...did my set with spalted maple and dark walnut, locally sourced here in Kentucky.
Awesome, glad to hear you were able to duplicate it! Hope your granddaughter enjoys it.
Hi man good job on these what is the dimension for all pieces please reply
Very cool!
Thank you!
Really cool.
Thank you!
This is exactly what I needed. With my limited equipment, I was voluntold to make chess pieces for my nephew for Christmas. My thought was to use those prototypes as templates, in case any other relatives get jealous. That way, I can produce the same set over and over without reinventing them.
Definitely! That is a great way to do it. Thanks for watching!
I am so stoked about this video! My son loves playing chess and we just recently bought our first table saw (still not assembled). There is no doubt in my mind, we will be making some chess boards and pieces too after we have some better skills. Great video. Out of curiosity...I don't have a band saw. Other than changing the design, how could I accomplish that cut on a table saw? Create a jig specifically for that angle I am assuming? Thank you for the inspiration. I am really exciting about doing this with my son. Have a great week!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, a jig to cut that angle will work just as well. I just didn't want to cut such a small piece at that steep angle on the table saw, but if you were to cut it off the end of a longer piece, it should be totally fine.
My question exactly, although I'm one up on you Andy, have had my table saw for a week and assembled for five days!
I am working on getting mine assembled this weekend!!!
I has chess-ked the video to see you style in the pieces, but piece by piece the cuts and simplicity was the checkmate on this project!
Haha, perfect! Thanks for watching, man!
very cool
Super nice - You motivate me to make my first set of pieces! wondering about the table saw blade kerf - it looks quite narrow?
Thanks! I think I was using a thin kerf blade for this, so 3/32" thick.
@@shaunboydmadethis Hi Shaun; I finished my chess pieces today (all but the final finish) modelled on yours with some twists of my own. Thanks again.
I made some pieces very similar to these recently. Found they were too light and had to add some lead fishing sinkers into the bottom of each piece to add some weight to them
I know this is an old video--but it was exactly what I was hoping to find! You say in passing you cut the blanks to their final size, and it looks like you moved the fence to 3/4". Is that correct? All the pieces have the same footprint, 3/4"? Thanks again for the vid. Cool stuff.
Thanks! I don't remember exactly how big they were, but I do remember the pawns were slightly smaller. So maybe 3/4" for the big pieces, and 1/2" for the pawns?
This is once again: AWESOME! I´m thinking about to invite you next year to the german baltic coast for a big adventure. I´ll start in the early 2019 to build a home. I think there is a lot of woodwork. ;-)
Thank you, Matthias! Sounds like you have quite a big project coming up! Very exciting!
Perfeito 👍👏👏
Obrigado!
Love your disclaimee
This is amazing, I've watched this video ten times today. I'd love to make these piece however have no bandsaw. I wonder if it would be easy enough to make the bishop with the table saw. Would just need to get a block and my angles right.
Yep, you could do it on a table saw. Just be careful cutting such a small piece!
@@shaunboydmadethis Hi, thanks for msg back, much appreciated. I've been thinking about cutting the Bishop on the table saw and put it off until I figured out the best way. Will give it a go. Thanks again for your video and making such an amazing set of Chess pieces, it was inspiring 👍😎♟
Thanks, Shaun - my own set came out just like yours - with two changes: 1) I cut a V in the top of the knight heads, makes them look more "equine"; 2) made an extra king for both walnut and maple, then painted the walnut with gold bands upper and lower, and on top of his crown, and silver on the maple. That way the winner of the game will take home the gold king, and the loser takes the silver king. I have a grandson who always wins!
That is awesome! Sounds like you added some nice details, and I imagine your grandson is pretty happy to play with them. Thanks for watching!
Hey Shaun! I'm thinking of making a set like this and was wondering what kind of finish you used for the pieces
Right on, I just used a few coats of Danish Oil for these. Thanks for watching!
What size are the pieces please?
Great !
Thank you!
I started a set of chess pieces 15 years ago. Took me 2 years. Then I bought a new Dremel. You win! Thanks Shaun
Haha, as long as you got them finished! Thanks for watching!
I've always wanted to make a set of chess, but the pieces looked tedious so I never made one. These pieces look great and pretty straight forward to make!
Yeah, definitely. Give them a try!
I really really like your finish on this chess set mate! Personally I’m not a huge fan of people glossing the crap out of there sets. Cheers from Australia
Thank you! Yeah, for some reason chess sets often get a super high gloss finish, which I am rarely a fan of.
Very cool.
Thank you!
Great music choice. Nice simple peices as well. Best ending of all your vids. You need to feature your dogs more. BTW, was that an 8 inch dobsonian telescope?
Thanks a lot! Ogie is a good boy, and that telescope will burn your eye out.
Hey. What angle saw was the table saw at when you were cutting the King's Crown?
P.S This is amazing and I would like to recreate it!
Honestly, I have no idea. I think I just tilted it until I thought it looked good.
These are cool 😎
Cool pieces made by a cool guy!
What saw blade did you use for the cuts and the music was awesome! Thumbs up from me!
I was using a Forrest Woodworker II 40 tooth blade for all of this. Thanks for watching!
Always a pleasure to watch you in action Shaun! Now I'm off to look up that blade, Thanks!
Can they fit in the storage compartment as you intended? Painstaking and simply regal.
Yeah, I actually built a second one a couple months later with dividers for all the pieces.
Extra internet points for the doggo. Also, you should really post some type of dimensions or plans on your site for the chessboard and pieces. I’m pretty sure I could get most of this with minimal directions, but some dimensions for the sake of keep things proportional would really help. Even some pictures with just a ruler (ha! vague pun...) for scale would be grrr-eat! Another awesome video btw.
Thanks! That's a good idea, I am going to be building another one of these soon, so I might throw together some plans for them.
