I got the 1KD engine from a 2014 Toyota Hilux with only 25,000km on clock and installed in my BJ74. It has all the engine upgrades including new piston designs and one of last batch made in factory. Drives like a dream. Incredible torque and power. Added larger intercooler scoop, 4 core radiator, heavy duty clutch and really happy with the engine mated to R151 gearbox and 79 series transfer-case (Hi-Lo).

I bought a 2017 Prado in the 4L petrol. I'm originally from Canada, and I've never had a diesel before, so I was happy to stick with petrol in Oz. No issues thus far. No surprises either as I have had FJ's and 4Runner's in the past.

KD/KZ best pick of a bad bunch, would chose a Toyota over anything else. Generally anything that immediately goes wrong can be fixed with zip ties, duck tape, wd40 - It will get you home. However if I was MD of Toyota I would have worked on a reliable (head gaskets and piston ring oil consumption!) petrol unit, suck squeeze bang blow, compression fuel air spark, its simple to diagnose and fix which is the underpinnings of Hilux and LC and the economy would have been the same. Unfortunately it was just poor timing with diesels - especially euro - as they were just band aided to get through emissions regs and made ever more unnecessarily complex - my 2010 150 was the prime of the era. Coupled with our thirst for (apparently) better economy, the advent of "torque better than bhp" education we (manufacturers and consumers) were sucked in by governments into buying and producing diesel. Even the smallest component of a diesel engine, a washer, can leave us at best stranded fighting life or death or worse with a massive debt and bankrupt. I so wish the prado/hilux was just built with a simple, powerful enough, reliable I6/v6/v8 NA unit that gave 2 fingers to emissions and a hug to reliability and warranty so much so you'd see a better aftermarket for Hilux vehicles than you do for rangers - in lay mans terms....theres a reason the F150 is the best selling "car" in the US.

I can't comment on them all but do love these videos just spitballing the pros and cons of them all. Personally I own an intercooled 1KZ 3rd gen Surf with 185xxx kms which I absolutely love - to be fair at almost 30 years old its pretty much had everything replaced on it including a respray, but with a shift kitted valve body and unichip it goes real good, best thing about them is they're so easy to work on and parts are abundant. My old man has had a 1KD 150 series since new 2009 and has easily been the best car he's owned. Happy new year to everyone!

True, that engine is probably in the top 5 most reliable engines ever made for a passenger vehicles in my opinion. A bit of a false economy thinking you save money because the engine is reliable though as it uses so much fuel. If you did 680,000 kms with a fuel economy of 20 litres per 100 kms and a fuel price of $1.50 per litre, that would be a total of $5,100,000... thats $5.1 million. I have had many 4wd over 40 years, 18000 km mainly open road trips so far, extremely happy 2022 Fortuner owner. I get 8.6 l 100 around town, 8.8 l 100 driving at around 100kmh. Will flip it on 5 years. Seems like the next Fortuner will be a Petrol Hybrid may be the future one when Euro 6 comes in.

Looking at buying 2021 LC Prado GX or GXL. 2020 model seemed slow and the Auto Trans operates like it is trying to decide gears too often. DPF problems seem to be fixed. 2021 model has more power but is the bigger turbo putting more stress on the engine, I suppose we will find this out in time. The hotter Auto Trans temperatures i was not aware of so thank you for this information. I plan to keep my next vehicle for a long time so having 10 years of reviews would be better but as vehicle is only 3 years old only time will tell. 2021 Hilux actually drives like it has more power even though same engine, But Auto different and i think it puts the power out better, The 250-300 kgs of extra weight of the LC Prado compared to same year Hilux seems to make a big difference. Hopefully 2021 LC Prado GDJ150R will turn out to be a tough, reliable and reasonably maintenance free vehicle that stands the test of time.

I completely disagree. I’ve had 2 of every generation Hilux since 1990. That included a ‘06 SR manual and ‘12 SR manual (both 1KD’s), as well as a ‘16 SR auto and ‘22 auto (both 1GD’s). They were all used on the farm and the Vic High Country. The 1KD wasn’t a bad motor, though it was absolutely gutless right off idle (far better suited to an auto). The engine had a very heavy flywheel effect which I suspect was a band aid fix to prevent it from stalling down low and very little top end power. The 1GD was a significant step forward and especially with the updated 150KW engine. I do a lot of overtaking and the updated 1GD absolutely whallops the others before it. My wife also owned a ‘15 Prado 1KD altitude at the same time and it performed way better than the the 1KD’s in the ‘06 and ‘12 Hilux’s.

I bought a 2017 Hilux new and to be honest I'm a bit surprised at your findings and opinion. My mate has a 2013 Hilux and we compare them offroad and driving offsite to get lunch etc. We love them both, but do concede the newer GD engine and transmission performs better, no question. Now having said that I have driven a two other N80 hiluxs that don't drive as well as mine, so I'm not shocked by your findings. I drove a 2019 Rouge that was crap and I don't get it? My hilux is responsive like driving a sedan around town and my gear shifts are smooth, maybe I just got lucky? It is an amazing 4x4 (it is twin locked) and consistently outperforms the 2013 model using the same gearing (maybe because of the longer wheel base?). Anyway interested that you have drawn such a strong, unshakable opinion. For the record I never tow other than a small light trailer once a month.

So the 2KD-FTV is not very known in Australia? So far it is ok for my light duty and daily use in my Hilux. Just 120kKm on the clock. DPF still ok but keen to remove it asap.

My 2KD-FVT is at 200k km's now. Placed the 7mm plate to minimize EGR, works like a charm.
DPF in place and needed for yearly check in the Netherlands (EU).

The old Toyota diesel 6cl and the V8s in the landcuisers are good for 1million kays if serviced regularly towing a 3 ton caravan around Australia if you don't flog it , but this small 4cl diesel half the size working twice as hard to be the new V8 killer , I don't think it would make it to 1/2 million kays it will ware out fast , what do you think

Quality of engine materials is good. It might last longer than you think. It will definitely depend how it’s used and it will chew even more fuel because it will be working so hard to get the job done.

I've always called a Prado a FAKE LANDCRUISER. I kept the Last of the Real ones, an 80 series with an FT in it. I gave it a health check last month @ 420000 kms, the Mains & rod bearings have virtually no wear on them, good for another half a million. And having studied Electrical Engineering I don't agree about the Hybrids being a viable option, maybe short term, but long term NO WAY. Battery technology is still rubbish, you might get 5 years out of a battery then your up for 10's of thousands of dollars, that's not including other problems like failed controllers etc. Keep it simple, keep it reliable, it's not rocket science.

1KD fans are weirdos. They'll jump on 1GD and call it better when Toyota launch a new engine. I also have 1KD but a 1GD in markets that have no DPF or EGRs it's brilliant

1kz was a very engine. 1kd had issues and thr 1gd has gone a lil more downhill in the name of efficiency. I am kinda Toyota doesn’t test their engines under more severe conditions or perhaps real world conditions

Had a KZ90 with 260K which I gradually brought over 300K on the period of 2 years. The car was an old mule and the engine was probably the good point, but had to rebuild gearbox (1st gear syncros were worn out due to bad towing by previous owners) and also replace starter and steering. Got rid of it after spending almost 5000€... At the end it was not about fuel economy or performance but the fact that those cars have had many owners before you and you don't know shit about how they were treated... it is a lottery. Plan was to replace for a newer Prado but the GD engine put a lot of doubts on me, waiting to see how the Petrol Hybrid/Diesel Hybrid turns out. Still driving a Toyota though... a Corolla.
