  • This video shows how to replace the damping module in a Sachtler Ace tripod head. The job is very easy and you can do it, the parts only cost around $100 (June 2019)
I got the word "dampening" stuck in my head because the pan drag is controlled by a damping module, thank you for overlooking the blunder.

Wow. I was about to give up on my Ace M head, which has lost most of its pan drag on "2", while "1" and "3" settings feel exactly the same (like they are both "1"). It also makes a noise like a soft scraping as I pan too. Then I found this. Fantastic. Most I could hope for was a diagram somewhere obscure, but here's a how-to video and a link to the parts. Thank you!

happy to hear that! if you use your head gently, you'll be ok, i use mine heavy on the pan, lots of action back and forth and lots of days of use... mine has already worn out again :(, thankfully i notice now when it is bad

Interesting... gone again? Same here, lots of panning, comparatively little tilting. But I'm surprised how quickly it's worn out. I've had mine for a couple of years, but haven't used it heavily, by any means. I think I'll replace the drag unit and then sell. As good as it is when new... not thrilled about it going south so quickly. I use it when traveling light and I've read and heard good things about the E-Image GH06. In the meantime, I've opened the M up and loosened everything as you describe. Drag unit kit on order. £68 here in the UK. :)

Hi, I replaced the part as shown. Thanks for the very helpful video. And the pan is now indeed a lot less loose. However, it no longer feels fluid, the pan feels really sticky and so subtle fluid pan moves are impossible. I did notice there was quite a lot of grease on the original part, and wasn't any grease on the replacement part. Is this what might be causing the problem, resulting in the pan being less fluid. If so, do you have any recommendations for what to do, is there a recommended grease or oil or something that needs to be applied?? Many thanks!

    Thanks! Very useful!
Is the bottom screw 3/8" or 8mm?
Can I remove the screw and put the head direct on my tripod? I have one wooden Berlebach with 100mm Ballhead building in, but very heavy-apr. 8kg!
    Thanks for a answer!
    Regards!

Thank you for your video. I did try to remove the stem off my ACE XL, but no luck, it is very hard, even the bowl cannot be removed as well even though those three little bolts have been unscrewed. Any idea? Thanks.

I can't get it off either, I'm prying so hard I'm damaging the silver "3" "2" "1" ring with marks from the flathead. Not sure what to do.

Stumbled across this while researching tripod restoration. Cool that you solved your issue but the breaker bar you used was a torque wrench. Never use a torque wrench to loosen screws as you'll ruin its calibration.

you just unscrew the bowl head knob, it's pretty standard on any bowl head tripods.
