      Could you guys explain, why some game engine requires max single core performance while some uses balanced methods to distribute different in-game tasks over cores ?

      I appreciate what you told. A common PC user will know this well by just starting task manager, afterburner & resource monitor.
      But I think it's a matter needed to dig deeper under the skin.

      It's great to see some real CPU intensive games in there, I was watching it thinking "I hope maybe Civ 6 is in there", but you stuck in Total War as well. Quite an eye-opener to see the difference the CPU can make in some titles and I basically agree with your conclusion. This is the only KL CPU worth buying. :P

  • @MakoRuu
    @MakoRuu Před 7 lety +99

    Intel probably had a bunch of i3 processors left over from Skylake that didn't sell, so they rebranded them as the new Pentium G for $70 to get rid of them.

    • @volatilez5558

    • @lowkeykenobi5039
      @lowkeykenobi5039 Před 7 lety +36

      MakoRuu But that wouldn't make sense as the G4560 uses Kaby Lake architecture, not Skylake. There is a chance though that Pentiums/i3s are just defected i5s and i7s with the clocks lowered and the bad cores disabled.

      What about the barebones and OEM market? You have great points about using processors that fail certain QA or QC tests, but I find lots of clients on the enthusiast market forget this.
      Dell, HP, Acer still has to make money in all of this and they are big players. Dont forget that market segment!
      Sure you can buy the box version of this processor, but dont forget the OEM market has to make money when they build a brand new computer for 500$US using their low powered and low featured motherboards. In the end, this processor has a great power to $ and performance to $ ratio. I dont regret buying an i5 6 years ago that still performs well for the occasional games i play at low resolution, but wow, 80$US for this performance? Hey, even a G4400 is like 50$ OEM version...
      Its a great video too! Thanks Steve.

    Finally someone compares CPU using a GPU that is likely to be paired with them. Real world questions are like 'should I get a G4560 instead of a I3-7350k and use the extra cash to go from a 1050 to a 1060? This video actually answers that.

So far this is one of the most comprehensible reviews you can have and happy to say that those numbers are close to my entry level gaming rig in reference to their past videos with the G4400 and GTX 1050ti. Not so sure why I watched this video if I knew already what was the outcome... Perhaps the next HTPC I will build will be different, thanks to Steve. Personally, im still quite satisfied with my i5-760 that i spent about 240$CAN close to 6 years ago. The difference in $ would most likely be well spent on a Z or X series motherboard with not too much bloat-gaming-features.
    Steve, you spent the whole week to show and explain us what again and again has been true for the processor industry. i7 are for gaming enthusiast clients (affluent kids) and the entry level processor will most likely always be the best bang for your bucks. Hopefully this video will be the standard and you have convinced enough people to not waste their money on i7 processors to get 2xx FPS on first person shooter games.

    • @denlog1177
      @denlog1177 Před 7 lety +9

      SMT was actually invented by IBM back in 1968. SMT and HT just have a second set of registers, stack, pointers, flag register, etc. for the second thread, but use the same execution units/hardware in a core such as floating point. Some threads do not use all of the hardware on a core so the second thread can use whatever hardware is not being used by the primary thread. Earlier versions fought over the hardware on a core more then current ICs.

    • @KrunchyTheClown78
      @KrunchyTheClown78 Před 7 lety

      Oh, I see, that is why HT never really gave the P4 much of a performance boast like it does in the Core i7. Thanks for the info.

      It was patented by Intel, making it harder for AMD to compete. I'm curious about Ryzen because they claim to have CPUs with 2 threads per core.

      Ryzen comes out with SMT specifically if I'm not mistaken here.

    Excellent video (as always). I do wish you had included an RX 470 though as I do feel that that would probably be the best fit for the Pentium. :0)

    Also, I feel like with the lower end GPUs, being maxed out, it makes sense that at ultra settings they would have similar numbers, but what about at more playable settings.. For example, if you dropped the settings to medium/high on the gtx 1050ti and 1060, since the GPUs wouldn't be completely maxed out, the CPUs would have more legroom, and I think there would be an increase significance in framerates when comparing the higher CPUs at lower settings on the lower end cards. I could be wrong, but I think it would be interesting. I'm sure it takes many hours to run all of these tests, so I just want to thank you all for the work that you put into these videos. It really shows with such quality content.

    • @Hardwareunboxed
      @Hardwareunboxed  Před 7 lety

      If you lower the quality settings and shoot for maximum FPS then yeah the G4560 will start to limit system performance. That said for budget gamers seeking playable performance with impressive visuals then the G4560 will work well. It's not a CPU for 144Hz gaming :D

      @Drumonymus Před 7 lety

      MrDeeb8 I also wonder what would happen if you just turned down some CPU demanding settings like the draw distance, as this should take some load off the processor. But that would of course be a hell lot of work for him :/

    This must have taken a while! Keep up the great work Steve! Only one request can you add rainbow six siege to your benchmarks? Their is an in game benchmark so it can be consistent.

    • @Hardwareunboxed
      @Hardwareunboxed  Před 7 lety

      I only dropped Rainbow Six Siege because it's a 2015 title, I already have so many 2016 games in the list, it's hard to test everything. That said I will see what I can do and thank you very much for the continued support!

    My request will be if you can benchmark Watch Dogs 2 because it's very CPU intensive from what I know and I would preferred the GTX 1070 to be tested instead of the GTX 1080, but still enjoyed this video.

      Normally I do test Watch Dogs 2 but for some reason no matter what I tried my copy crashed when loading, gave a memory error. Not sure what's going on there I will have to try and work it out tomorrow ;)
