      Volound Xbox released thief for free on the 360 and I couldnt even tolerate it passed chapter 4... The side missions are hardly entertaining and seem to be just a hassle. The upgrade system is rather pointless. Even if you consider the maps multi layering and design it is still very small. All in all very repetitive. 5/10 - on a generous scale

      Lord Grompulus Kevin Ribbiton of Croaksworth Yea I always considered the ones who rarely use power to be the most stealthy. Dishonored is fun in all but using powers to be stealthy sounds like a cheat to me. Like we actually have to climb normally in Thief instead of using that blink bullshit which means real stealth. When we compare games and make it competition between those games it can really piss those off who like the other game instead of the game that is winning the competition. Again Dishonored is fun but if I were to want real stealth, Thief or Hitman thats it.

      In Dishonored 2, they actually give you the option to play the game with no powers. Right at the beginning, you can flat out reject to receive the outsider's mark (Leaving you a 100% power free human). So for people like you who actually prefer to play based on normal humanistic physics alone, that is now an option. Enjoy.

    I know this video makes it sound like a 5-min commercial for Dishonored, but as someone who's played both games, I'd have to agree with the points made. Thief, while a great game and one that I immensely enjoyed, feels forced. It's not exactly a play-how-you-want-to game...the routes and methods to do things have all been planned for you. All you have to do is choose. Dishonored, on the other hand, feels way more dynamic and you feel like you have much more freedom to do things your way. That is the biggest difference which makes Dishonored better, in my opinion.
    Thief is a truly "stealth" game whereas Dishonored is a little more action-packed and intense because if you screw up your strategy, you'll engage in combat. I've re-played Dishonored about four times now but only played through Thief once...maybe I should give it a couple more tries before judging it too soon.

    • @JesusGreenBL
      @JesusGreenBL Před 9 lety +1

      King Willie Part of it is what they mentioned in this video, a lot of the time when you make first person more immersive (like showing your body/legs, having the camera shake and sway with movement, limiting turn/look speed etc) the amount of control the player has suffers slightly. Even if you do a pretty good job of it there's still a lot of issues like for example how you handle leg clipping (do you have it so if your ankle is stuck on a tiny ledge you can't move, creating more limited movement? or do you have your leg just clip through the object making it look weird and non-immersive anyway?)
      I think we're finally getting to the stage where people are just about working out how to do proper full body first person in a good way, but there's still a lot of work to be done to make it play as smooth as possible so I'd rather they get it down just right before it becomes the norm in games.

    Thief isn't as good as Dishonored, or the original Thief games, but it's still a fine and enjoyable stealth game. I feel it got judged a little harshly especially considering there aren't actually that many stealth games these days. A good, though not ground breaking, stealth game like Thief should be welcomed by stealth fans. It's well worth playing if you like stealth games.

      Adam Howell they had one huge problem: it had the thief name. the thief serie is known to be a very good stealth game, so if the new instalmend by a new team is an averige game with the thief titel, people feel betraid. the feel of the game is of and the AI is realy dum. the feel of dishonored was perfect and the stealth was a chalange, if you got in a swordfight you were a bit OP, but you were the last protection of the emperes and you got power from a god like being, so if was kind of justified.

    • @tycho7006
      @tycho7006 Před 9 lety +1

      Adam Howell My main issues with the game were the QTEs, bugs, repeating conversations that occasionally overlapped or flat out broke (I've got a video of one on my channel, for example), bad level design and load times. In some levels it was actually decent, and I kinda liked the Asylum level which I'm fairly certain was a homage to the asylum from Deadly Shadows (the level Robbing the Cradle).

    Personally, I'd give full marks for both games. Its hard to say which one I like more. They've both got this great way of making you feel like The City/Dunwall is descending into chaos. I find Corvo's silence to be a little dull, but the other characters in Dishonored make up for that. In Thief, Garret's sarcastic and witty comments along with his calm manner make him a cool character. Even when he's in trouble and seems like he might die, he always keeps his cool. Thief's graphics appeal to me a LITTLE more than those of Dishonored. I like the hand animations and the fact that you have to watch your money, making sure that you don't try to buy too much at once. Dishonored's powers were amazing, but Thief was more realistic and ALL combat related, Corvo could do both stealth and combat. It was a good fit for Dishonored, but I'm glad that Thief was ALL stealth, it was an original and worthwhile experience. I have to say that I enjoy playing both games equally, though.

  • @theravenousrabbit3671
    @theravenousrabbit3671 Před 10 lety +55

    They are two entirely different games! I'll explain it as simple as possible so people understand... Dishonored is an assassin game, in essence. Thief is a ... Thief game, the main goal is to steal and be stealthy, to not leave trace while Dishonored goes for the whole "Be a ghost or a butcher."
    They both have stealth elements and... That is it, that is the only similarity that they have gameplay wise. Their settings are both taken from the original Thief, beyond that literature that in so innumerable that simply spouting out one suggestion would be pointless. Where the confusion arises in the artistic, theme and surroundings of the game that end up making them appear so similar... But only on surface.
    Dishonored is a pure assassin game, even though you can choose to not kill anyone (This is the most boring way to play the game.) and the power fantasy comes from being able to line up those awesome kills, imaginative and creative kills.
    Thief is about feeling completely silent, to be the thief that no one notices... To skulk, to sneak and to steal all those precious valuables from those posh nobles that everyone hates and despises.
    They are different on a fundemental scale, this is like comparing a driving game to a piloting game, completely different but superficially similar.

It makes sense since Corvo is rushing to find Emily and such while in thief he's gathering information about what happen for the year he can't recall, but I don't think comparing them is really fair. Thief is about being a thief in a crumbling city while dishonored you are an assassin, they both feature different aspects of the stealth genre.
    I liked Garett's quips and thoughts he spoke and didn't like that Corvo was a blank slab of meat that never talked.
    I liked picking locks and distracting guards and didn't like that Corvo's arsenal was way overpowered
    I love the asylum level in thief (made me jolt a spook or two) and didn't like that Dishonored had about 0 feel of the bizarre
    so again, I still like dishonored because it was more about me figuring out a solution than following set pieces but I think this video made Thief sound like a bad game, which it isn't, it is a great fun game.

    Speaking as a hard core Thief fan from way back, I have to say, Dishonored does edge out this Thief reboot in playability. Not necessarily for the gameplay for me. I love Garret's new city and the thieving, but the mechanics of saving the game (three save slots? What?) and the disastrous map in Thief made the game bloody annoying.
    In Dishonored, I can replay any mission I want after I'm done. In Thief, I have to start the game and get to the start point on the map and then play, again, a huge pain with that map.
    The main flaw is the storyline. Dishonor's is clearly superior. The creators of the new Thief game jettisoned practically everything that made the Thief world cool: Mechanists and Pagans and such. They had character. The storyline in the new Thief was weak and centred mostly around that girl, Erin, whom I really wanted to be dead. That's not good. And the finale was HIGHLY unsatisfying.
    Most annoying for me, they left the most Thief like level, The Bank Heist, OUT OF THE MAIN GOD DAMN GAME! How stupid is that?
    Take that game engine for Thief, write a more Thief like story with the factions we love, multiple save slots and the ability to replay missions from the main menu once completed... and we'd have a serious contender to Dishonored.

      +John Westcott Your one of the more rational Thief fans I've seen around with this comment. I do agree a better story that brings back the original stuff from the series that I've only read about, and you have the makings of a much better game. I never got the chance to play the original games in the Thief series but I've looked it up and I liked what I read, an actual follow up or complete remake with the story from then with modern graphics on a console that i actually have like the PS4 and I'd enjoy it quite a lot.

    • @johnwestcott5612
      @johnwestcott5612 Před 8 lety +2

      ShinKyuubi I thought the recent Thief had great game play. Very in keeping with the originals. The story was piss poor. The most Thief like level in the game, The Bank Heist, and they leave it out of the main game!
      STUPID AS HELL!
      The bank level on Thief 2: The Metal Age was one of my favourites of all time and a standout from the entire series. I liked the whore house one. That wasn't too bad. I liked the side missions (There weren't nearly enough of those.) and the villain and story was rather blah.
      Use the exact same engine and reboot the series with the original characters like the Pagans and Hammers/Mechanists and make more mansion thieving, more bank thieving, etc. and it would be great (Oh, and the voice acting sucked. The new guy playing Garrett just sounded bored.) Bring the original dude back. They said they didn't have him back because he couldn't mo-cap, which was stupid. They could have had someone mo-cap and still had the original voice actor. Darth Vader can be played by multiple facets of different people. Why not Garrett?
      Dishonored has much better story and some major thief elements to make it a good stealth game. It is a shame, since it is clearly inspired by the originals. It outshone the reboot.

      Verticle movement

      More RnG
      More encounters
      More options for Low and High Chaos

    Kind of hard to compare the two because the stealth itself is so much different. Dishonored is a little ridiculous, you're blinking around slowing down time, running on rooftops, etc. whereas Thief is very grounded in its stealth.
    The only areas you can really compare them are in level design, where Dishonored is the clear winner. The game takes far more inspiration from Thief: The Dark Project and the first Deus Ex than Thief does in it's level design. The levels are open and intricate, the best path is far less evident and it makes for an extremely organic stealth experience that doesn't feel engineered. Thief falls into the same trappings as Deus Ex: Human Revolution as far as level design where you choose from 3 relatively obvious paths to get through each linear section. Thief ends up being the worse of the two because it's so cramped, in DX3 it's harder to notice the design flaws because the areas are much larger.

      Father Karras I can agree with this, Corvo was very one dimensional in that he had no actual "substance" to his character being all silent and making no decisions whatsoever other than to kill or spare people. Honestly though I did like the dark atmosphere that was presented, albeit not as good as the thief series it was still a plus. Compared to the thief games the writing is a bit lackluster in dishonored (the predictable plot is basically poor writing don't see why it needed that double emphasis). The thief series had an amazing way to meld the simple thievery of Garrett and make it much more than that with crazy supernatural plots. In dishonored there was a bit of back story and world building in readings that you find around the place, similar to thief but not as interesting and dark. Thief was AMAZING for its time, presently its still a good game but the gameplay isn't as amazingly smooth as you're making it out to be. Overall Dishonored was a good try at the stealth genre with more refining it could be as good as thief, but it wouldn't be the same.

    I haven't played neither title, but I honestly think the "player creativity" shouldn't count. In this factor, both games are completely different. Thief is more "realistic" (I put that in quotes cause some things are beyond reality like focus and water arrows) so you would use more realistic tactics than Dishonored. Dishonered has supernatural powers, which obviously breaks reality, and you can do what ever. In a way, you can count these factors against both games, but imho I would. But that's just my 2 cents.

      The way the two does stealth is fundamentally different, and i think that is more important than one focuses more on superpowers than the other.

    They don't try to accomplish the same at all. I don't even know why or how you can compare them. The thing is pretty simple. Both are great games and here is the main difference:
    Dishonored puts you in the role of a supernatural being, pursuing which ever goal you choose to. It's your own way with the tools and powers given.
    Thief is literally 'Thief'. It's like a Thief-Simulator where you play somewhat a realistic thief that lets you interactively take on the role of such.

      How the hell can Dishonored be a ripoff of Thief, when Thief came out two years AFTER Dishonored?
      ... Unless you're talking about Dishonored being better than the ORIGINAL Thief: The Dark Project from the 90s. Which would be hilarious, because A) the original Thief came out over a DECADE earlier than Dishonored so it's a pathetic comparison to begin with, and B) the original Thief does a lot of things better than Dishonored does still. Many will argue that the original Dark project is better than Dishonored. And I am one of those.

    yes, when playing Thief and Disnonrod both with no alerts, only stealth takedowns and no the hightes setting, Thief's stealth gameplay, looting and atmosphere (and level structures) are better... , but Disonored has other strengths (story, more polished and an epical "beam/teleport" skill, that can be used for stealthing),
    in this case, if you Love Stealth, you'll love Thief as much as Disonored... (Disonored is the overall better "game", while Thief is the overall better "stealth game".., people who don't like or understand stealth, will not really undestand Thief..., it has to be played on master, with most custom settings on..)

  • @Bitscreed

    Great vid with excellent points.
    Dishonored is clearly the more faithful spiritual successor to the original Thief trilogy, especially in the level design. Thief 2 in particular designed buildings and other environments as "real" spaces and leaves it up to the player to find their own way in. Dishonored followed that same design philosophy, unsurprisingly given Dishonored had a bunch of original Thief team members working on it.
    Meanwhile nuThief seems takes the DX:HR approach where approaches are restricted to one of several fixed paths. In DX:HR these paths were combat, vents/stealth or social. In what I've seen of nuThief the choices seem to boil down to just "this window or that door." I haven't played nuThief myself yet so I'll reserve final judgement until I do but right now I'm more excited about a possible Dishonored 2.

    To me, Thief is the one who is more superior in stealth, he could rob Corvo blind, maybe not if Corvo had Dark Vision on, but he doesn't always, Thief feels very nimble when I play as him, unlike the buff power-horse Corvo, or in the DLC's the rubber and leather clothed Daud, who would realistically be squeaking around. Besides the Dishonored AI's are programmed to be absolute dipshits, blaming anything they see or hear on rats, sometimes even if they got confronted by Corvo physically. But in power, Corvo is the obvious winner. He can summon rats that would devour you in mere seconds, shatter your bones against the wall with Windblast II, use bloodlust which is like rage mode from Force Unleashed 2, slow time or completely stop it, teleport, increase his health, increase his agility, possess animals or people, acquire various charms with powers, and last of all, great sword skills. Corvo has a cause, that is fulfilled by the mood of the player, to be brutal and get revenge, or to move along, and focus on what he needs. Theif just mainly steals things, which wasn't a hard created plot, but massively entertaining. And don't get me started on ass shit creed, the first game was stealthy, the ones after that ruined the feeling, making the characters seem more like nimble warriors than stealthy assassins.

      I only played Dishonored once but I'm pretty sure it's not a sandbox. It has big levels but they are still levels. You get taken by boat to different locations throughout the game to complete certain tasks... I haven't played Thief yet but I agree that stealth is probably more important. In Dishonored I often got spotted after like an hour of careful progression and ended up having to murder dozens of guards that I had bypassed earlier. While I wanted to play stealthy... I could turn into a one man killing machine a lot easier.

    • @MLaak86
      @MLaak86 Před 10 lety +2

      Grumpy Catterman Well I'd put Dishonored down as a sandbox type game because it allows you to pursue any playstyle you want.
      In Dishonored if you're caught, as you mention, you can just kill anything that moves.
      In Thief you're kinda stuffed if you get found.

Your actions define and mold the fate of the city and the next mission, who knows if the 3 guards you just killed caused you to lose for dying to a rat swarm in the next level, the stealth in Dishonored ALWAYS rewards by reducing the number of guards to the missions to come.

There are at least a dozen occasions I've had an enemy staring me right in the face at less than a foot away in Deadly Shadows, but not seeing me because I was pressed up against the wall. Wait until nightfall and ask someone you know to crouch in the darkest corner they can find in a room (without you knowing which corner). How close do you have to get to see them?

If you want to go on a killing spree and blast your way trough the game, then Dishonored is the game for you, if you preffer a stealth aproach then you can have waaaay more fun in thief, as it utilizes the stealth mechanics in a much more fun way! Harrison Smith I didn't. In fact the game does a pretty good job at showing where you can hide and where you can't. The shadow system is so binary; it's either you're hidden or you're not. The small light gem on the bottom left corner goes from black, grey and white. White means you're in the light and black means you're in the dark. That doesn't mean whether you're hidden or not; it just tells you what lighting you're in.

      +brandon9271 I don't think open world would be a good idea. Dishonored's non-open world made it very focused. it might benefit from larger levels but I really don't think making it open world would improve it. The devs had manageable areas with excellent ways to get around all over the place. I feel like making it open world would make it that much harder to make getting around as immersive and varied because they would have to focus on making the whole world like that and it would likely make it incredibly hard to make the entire world like that. I love my open-world sandbox games, but I don't think Dishonored should be one of those games.

      Yeah, i liked the linear gameplay of Dishonored. I don't really want it open in the gameplay sense i guess.. But i wish the engine could seemlessly transition without loading zones. The loading time really slowed the pace at times. Especially when you're in a tough spot and die a lot. On my system it takes 30-45 seconds to load. That's frustrating if you get killed a lot of want to start over because you are detected

    I haven't played the older Thief games, but Dishonored is way better than the new Thief game. I just feel like a sneaky badass. I don't like that much challenge in my videogames that much so it was perfect for me. I still felt clever solving the puzzles, but Thief just felt boring. The Bow and Arrow isn't nearly as cool or as fun to play around with as Dishonored. All the additional paths felt artificial.
    Plus, the optional encounters in Dishonored insane.

    I'll put it like this: I looked at Thief and thought "well, this looks like a good LOOKING game in atmosphere and I like sneaking about". Then, I've heard of things such as being stuck at points of no return in levels. That is not good, considering Thief's open ended history.
    Dishonored is one of my favorite games. I've beaten it and the alternate story DLCs because to me, it's a good stealth action blend, the setting is awesome, there is an abundance of lore, and the way the powers and gadgets are implemented is good. I dunno, chalk it up to personal taste.

    While Thief 4 was announced only a few years after the release of Thief: Deadly Shadows, much of the team quit for personal reasons. When the brothel level was being designed, many more of the designers complained that they felt "wrong" working on it, prompting them to quit as well. I think it's possible that Thief 4 was supposed to be "Dishonored" before Dishonored was, and that some members of the team that used to work on the project went to Bethesda and offered to give them the ideas that were originally intended for Thief 4, either to win the favor of their higher-ups, or possibly more casually.

      Dishonored "beam/teleport" skill was epical.., and Dishonored was best played 100% stealth (on master, with 0 alarms & 0 kills)
      but in terms of pure stealth gameplay (and amtosphere) besides looting => Thief ist better... (not the "overall" better game, but the better "stealth" game, what many fans actually wanted)
      but of course only if played on master with most custom setting on (especially 0 Alerts, no focus, no damage, only stealth takedowns ect...)
      and the dude here in the vid is a fool, the city hub is totally cool, and he nippicked things, that Dishonored did better, to make Dishonored look like it's superior on all accounts, which Disonored is NOT.. , Thief does a few (important) things better, like mentioned in the stealth and atmosphere department.. (but sure, overall I'd say Dishonroed is stil the better game, but Thief is nowhere that bad as many are trying to make it be => it's due to incompetent reviewers who get frustrated over the difficultish game and punish it with low scores.., like EMG, Gamespot or IGN..)

    This new Thief game is just a port of Dishonored in the thief universe, and it doesn't even execute it well. Where are the Mechanists? Where are the Hammerites? Pagans? The trickster? Sure it has some good storyline and neat plot twists, but that would be perfect if it wasn't labeled "Thief" but it does.
    This is what Dishonored didn't do and that's why it worked. The makers either willingly or unwittingly knew that making a modern graphics and gameplay engine game branded Thief would simply not work cause nobody these days can reproduce classic game's climate nor the old gamers would accept it. So they went berserk with originality, put all the stealth elements they could from Thief, gave it a unique story, unique universe, unique plot and simply made a Thief game that was completely not Thief. People can still say this is just a discount Thief, but than again, they can't blame it for ruining Thief franchise like it may be said about this new Thief game.

      Apparently, Thief wasn't only a reboot but a sequel too. It's like 100 or 1000 years or some shit, but kind of hard to say that with the lack of technology, like, what happened.

    • @Galejro
      @Galejro Před 9 lety

      Edward James Kenway The technology was still there. It may be speculated that people simply got sick of the BS of the hammerites & mechanists and were resentful of technology in general, hence the disdain for the Baron who wished to bring progress. And I can't blame them to a degree; First you get a bunch of fanatics trampling trees cause they think they're agents of evil, than an even worse bunch of terrorist fanatics who wanted to build a world only for robots, and the only alternative is a bunch of lunatics worshiping a devil.

    Thief The Dark Project and Thief 2 The Metal Age kick the shit of Dishonored, but duh it's better than the shitty reboot.
    Dishonored had some great ideas and truly shined on occasion but it's a deeply flawed game, The original Thief games weren't big on story but at least they put it at the side and didn't interrupt the gameplay.
    Dishonored just can't get off unless you listen to at least 15 minutes of lifeless dialogue and boring character interactions that serve no character development or levity. It also contained one of the most predictable twists of the past few years. Having to go back to the Loyalist HQ between every mission served just to test my patience. The story really got in the way of my enjoyment of the game because it's so obnoxious in the way that it presents it.
    The original Thief games story was minimal and didn't get in the way, and it's still more interesting than Dishonored's, but the best strength it has is Garret, one of the best protagonists gaming has ever had. His cynical remarks and dry wit make him instantly likable and give the game a great protagonist for us to grow attached to.
    Corvo is a Silent protagonist with no personality and his only defining characteristic is to choose between good and evil options. BORING!
    The gameplay of Dishonored was really fantastic with some of the best level design in years, but that only lasted so long, because after the twist, stealth kind of fades into the background as the game becomes more about platforming and monster killing and really looses a sense of identity.
    The original Thief had the same issue, and focused too much on monster killing, but Thief 2 corrected that.

      That's your opinion. You are one of those people who like the gameplay, which is alright. But I'm just one of those people who like depth put into a game, I read all the letters and books. Learned some things about the game. Like Emily is Corvo daughter, but wanted to keep secret from even her.
      Corvo isn't silent, he just doesn't have a voice actor. The game was short with high replay value. And I like Thief too, but I only just started it so you keep what you know from that for I am an absolute newbie to that game.

    I played thru Dishonored +10 times and I've pre ordered Thief. Now these two shouldn't be compared to each other as Thief is more 'hardcore' stealth game, where you're not op against guards. Where as Dishonored there's no light level and all is based on enemy seeing you in his line of sight. In Dishonored you can kill all enemies in a single mission easily without being worried about getting killed, also those 'magical' Outsider's powers make the game no doubt a lot more fun to play but also gives that easy feel to the game, as you can blink thru every mission not killing anyone. Both are great games but Thief is more like the old Splinter Cell games, hard and even more harder if you decide to make it a challenge. Now obviously you can make Dishonored hard by not using magic or not killing anyone, but it's still not as hardcore as I feel Thief being.

      (It's actually impossible to complete Dishonored without using your Outsider powers at all. There's a few sections of the game where you need agility or blink to pass).

      TheWroster I forget which mission it was in (It was two years ago dang it). One of the CZcamsrs I watch, Gopher, was doing a LP without using any powers, and he reached a point where you had to have blink, or at least one point in agility in order to make a jump, making Dishonored's magical powers a necessary game mechanic.

    i have played every Thief game and as much as i loved Thief 1 and 2 [the first being my favourite] and even thief 3 was decent considering the atmosphere created and total immersion simply from watching a few basic almost still frame images inbetween missions.
    the mysterious Keepers [now long forgot.. as are the Hammerites and the Pagans] constantly gave Garrett a hard time as he was taken in by them because of his natural thief talents, trained until he reached a certain age and left without a by-your-leave.
    but the Keepers still knew of Garrett's significance in the world and how important the Keepers' tomes and information gathering was in constantly pointing to Garrett as the cause of the advancement or demise of the City.
    they knew his skills were not only an asset but also a curse and would draw attention from some very powerful figures.
    also, the short little Pagan or Hammerite sayings imprinted on the screen made you wonder.. "whatever is next?"
    Thief 4 was way too much Thief 2:Metal Age. the culling of the weak to be replaced by mechanical golems? and it borrowed too much from Dishonoured.
    Erin died far too early. Erin would have at least gotten herself locked up and perhaps Garrett would have had to break her out, teaching her certain lessons about how she should thief with less agression and maybe giving us a more intriguing storyline.
    i've played Thief 4 on 3 diffeent consoles and on 2 of them the bugs were so bad that it made the game unplayable.
    the PC version seems to work tho.
