I feel ya...Scenes is one of my favorite records of all time. It has the most tame IIC+ tone ever, and its so warm and woody. I just got tickets 13 days ago to go see em in Syracuse NY on November 10th. I really dig the new record, its fresh and easy...but when I heard they are playing Scenes in its entirety, I jumped in head first. This will be the 14th time for me at a DT show, and was the most expensive concert yet at $185US for a pair of 8th or 9th row tix...slightly stage left OF COURSE, lol.
Major props to these old timers, they just anounced yet another leg to this epic tour down in Chile and Brazil, a couple weeks after they announced this 2nd US leg. True vets of the road like very few others.

Ironically, I ran into JP at the airport in Amsterdam the day after watching their show in London. I had to look twice but it was really him, late at night, standing there with perhaps his guitar tech who was rather scary looking. Initially I kept walking because I didn't know what to say, and by the time I almost reached the last gate I gathered my guts to talk to him. He was extremely nice, I was having a slight melt-down trying to talk to him because he's been my favorite guitarist and influences as a guitarist since I was a kid. Because I didn't want to be disrespectful I didn't whip out my phone and ask for a photograph, however, I kind of regret it in some way. It was just such a crazy moment in my life.

The part of the interview that bothered me deeply was that about Kevin Moore. To me that was very sad. I know a lot of long time Dream Theater fans that, like me, believe Moore truly contributed something special that was very much lost after his departure. I love all Dream Theater albums, but like many people Images and Words and Awake are still 1 and 2 as favorites. The number one thing I think Moore took with him was the ambient keyboards. The more atmospheric sounds like Surrounded and Lifting Shadows Off a Dream. Space Dye Vest, a Moore song, remains one of their most unique compositions to this day. So it is obvious what Moore meant to the band, but to just not stay in touch with John is heartbreaking...or at least in my way of thinking of life and friends. Sad really.

I think the metropolis part 2 through black clouds is the best Era. I don't disagree that Kevin provided some great keyboard work but I don't think dream theater lost a great deal of their identity with rudess. Much of the dt sound was elevated thanks to Jordan and he did also do some great ambient work especially in mp2, train of thought and six degrees. It was perhaps less dominant but still there. In addition we got some marvelous solo work and riffing.

    • @jrgilbert

Interesting DT story -- a cassette copy of DT's "Awake" album was one of the last things I bought at my local Jamesway department store before they closed up shop in 1994. So many fond memories of cassette albums and singles I bought at that store in the 80's and 90's!

John Petrucci was such an inspiration when I played guitar. Scenes From A Memory is still my all-time pound-for-pound favorite album ever. And his solo album, Suspended Animation, is a masterpiece from beginning to end. I stop following him when I stopped playing and changed to something else, and I can't say I like what he has become (stylistically), but the man is a legend.

I think that if I ever get the chance to meet him IRL I'd instantly turn into a puddle of blob. Dream Theater's music guided me, both in hard times and good times: it's the cause of me meeting my soulmate, it has been there when my grandad died, it has been there when I was growing up, it cured (and continues to cure) my depression, it made every good moment better. Dream Theater's music has been, ultimately, the light that guided me in darkness and the catalyst that made the sun look brighter, and it continues to do since Christmas of 1999, when my grandad gave me Metropolis Part 2 as a gift. That's why I couldn't meet John Petrucci or any of them: how can you say "thank you" in a way that encompass all the things above?

Just be a person, be a nice person and strive to be the best at what your role is on this earth. I think he is nailing all of those.
