- A lovely lil camp in the woods with the autumn colours đ And under a tarp in the rain was a perfect way to spend a night đ
With the help of the Insta gang Iâve determined this set-up is probably called a âlean-to with a lipâ (I may be wrong). It was one of my favourites so far, as it provides great views in every direction except the back, protects from rain and wind and has loooooads of space. Like a freakinâ palace it was!
Getting prepared for tarping in colder weather now, I got myself some down booties for camp, a lil foam sit-mat and a bigger ground tarp.
Due to me being a clumsy oaf who should not be allowed electronics, Iâm currently without drone and camera, so this one was filmed mostly on a Canon G7X that I borrowed from a friend.

People who know me know I like to travel light and like you I put on several layers of clothes, vermal vest and long johns. I'm a walker and can walk miles, across the Norfolk Broads, through Wales along the South Coast, along the coast line of Cornwall, Islay with just the clothes I had on my back (though I do like to have a plastic survival bag to cover myself when it rains. Not exactly camping but I love it. I think it's the walking that's kept me alive 67 now. And I can sit in a landscape all day long and just feel gratitude for another day of life. đđ

Was out over the last two nights wild camping. Hearing two tawny owls call out to each other is haunting yet beautiful

3:14 is a tawny owl, a bird that was often seen as a messenger of death in earlier days. The call sounds a little like the German "komm mit" (come with me). Perfect to scare the crap out of little children during a night walk trough the forest.

@@WildBeare My uncle had a different explanation back in the day: villages were quite dark during the night hours in older ages, with the only exception of a recent death. The light drew the owls closer and people started to connect their sound to the exitus that had happened in the village.
That was a female tawny owl. She's calling for her male. He is the one that does the traditional toowittoowoo. He didn't seem to be around.
Could be the light that atracts them in some kind indeed or the rodents atrected to the hauseholds. I saw and heard those beautifull birds hundreds of times ( and am still alive ;) ). Most often they can be heard during mating season when the females try to atract a male, or in a warmer time of the year when the young ones sygnalize their position to the parrents waiting for food. Often they use abbandoned buildings as shelter during the day and it happens that they are common in my area and the nearest forest starts about 30 meters from my house so they're common animals where I live but I really apriciate encountering them. In my country they also are threated as a symbol of luck and wisedom. Also many wolves in my surroundings ... not so plesant encounters, but also fascinating . Cheers

Oooh, sound of rain on a tarp used to send me shivers. As ex-Forces, that sound just before getting up, was an unwelcome prelude for a dayâs patrolling etc and knowing Iâd be getting soaked. đ
I usually go camping with friends, so the winter evenings are spent either talking nonsense or putting the world to rights.
My camping rule is that its better to be too hot in your sleeping bag during the winter, than too cold.

The more I watch her, the more I adore her. Thats awesome roughing it, her entire tarp series is basically open camping. I wouldn't do it but I think its awesome she has the adventurous spirit and the trust in nature. Give me a nice big closed tent, or even better a 2 person rack mount tent so I can feel I am up in a tower or something. Luv camping, just want to be up higher with illusion of a secured enclosure.

Here in northern California, one has to be careful of mountain lions, bears, snakes, poisonous spiders etc.. The animals I am not scared of. It is the crazy and dangerous people that are the problem

Itâs just so nice following you on these nights in the woods. Iâve always felt safer zipped up in my tent but you are tempting me to try a tarp.
Hi Catherine, ahh yeh try it :D I just got a cheap ÂŁ20 one to start with to see how I liked it before getting a more expensive/lighter/more versatile one. Honestly I'm a total convert! It's so nice being out in the fresh air with views all around. I only tend to used a tent on mountain trips now. I'd deffo recommend using a lil bivi bag too, just to keep your bag dry & free of bugs etc. Let us know how you get on if you try it :) have a great eve, Claire

Awesome job I have just a couple suggestions. First mound up a layer of Leaves on the back of the tarp where you see any light coming through. This will block any cold breeze and insulate you a bit. Next you could make a pile of dry leaves under your tarp it will get you up off the cold ground it makes a big difference believe me. I've done a lot of camping and survival practice and it's some of the little things that make a huge difference. Once again great job keep going and thank you for posting your adventures.

Books are a good way to past the time away. Those clip on lights where a good idea, looked jammin lol.
Whittling is good skill too learn and does help pass time in the winter camp

That's what I love about tarp camping, protection from the elements, versatility and not claustrophobic like a tent, though they definitely have their place. Still think of the setup as a wonky donkey đ thanks Claire đđ

Great video. If you did not have your super-warm sleeping bag I would have recommended at least side walls on your shelter. A fire in front and behind it a heat reflector.

I love a good wild camp. Once it gets dark, I normally read a book, then listen to some podcasts. There's something rather cosy about climbing in to a sleeping bag.

I've got the sundick down boots and sit mat, I find they are really lightweight and make a massive difference to comfort and warmth particularly in winter. Great video!

i download a couple of novels to read during winter camp,the nights are so long and if i go to sleep at 9pm i,m wide awake at 4am,still dark,so i read and take in the night sounds and hopefully a milkyway before bed.thank you for your videos,take care

A basha, even without ground sheet, is simply the best way to overnight in the wilderness, in all but the most inclement weather. Awesome bit of kit, so much flexibility. Never slept as well, certainly not indoors. The only thing that betters it, is sleeping under an open sky, IF you know itâs definitely not going to rainâŠ.đ

Itâs called a screech owl, for obvious reasons and the wood craft is called whittling. Another nice little video Claire. Donât think weâll be seeing you anytime soon on the catwalk in those boots but I bet they are warm. Just stay clear of the granny version; single boot you put both feet into.

đnice cosy camp... especially with the rain and that tarp set up... great combo.... lots of chill time, I like to cook, if you can fibd somewhere stealthy enough a spit roasting a chunk of meat is a great way to pass the time, or a nice spicy cowboy chilli in a Dutch oven. Shame you didn't sleep well.... I hate being hot! Still enjoyable though. Cheers!

Nice to have a simple setup. Those sit mats are great. They last ages and good to kneel on and sit.
In the winter I just go walking with the headtorch, dependant on where I camp
Claire, I always play your videos twice⊠the first time I actually close my eyes and listen only to the audio (with ear buds), the second time I actually watch it⊠I donât know why? But itâs such a meditation for me! What I do to pass time after dark is pour whiskey and take a very slow and stealthy walk around being very quiet, trying to acclimate to the sounds, smells of the woods at least for an hour. Then pour another whisky :)

You are the only woman I've known of, that would sleep in the wilds, without a tent fully zipped up at all times lol. Your emergency camp that time, freaked me out when i saw a massive woodlice nr you plus you said you could feel creatures moving beneath you! You're so brave Claire and i envy you of that. As for those Sundick slippers, we've bought the green ones and hoping it wasn't them that covered you in feathers! Saying that, our Berghaus jackets shed feathers faster than our budgie!

Those folding sit mats are one item everyone should have. I use mine every time I go out. Silvered ones are a bit warmer and they work great on the ground or to sit on in a camp chair.
