That last one doesn't make any sense. My cousin's Harley has WAY MORE storage space (even with my aftermarket saddle bags) than my Yamaha V-Star and he's got a longer mileage range. He has a fuel gage and mine don't. So... how is a Harley not a practical bike?
I OWN a metric cruiser and I'm asking this. (I bought what I can afford, don't hate.) I will probably NEVER buy a Harley, but I won't hate on them.
If I find myself in a a situation where I've replaced my truck that got wrecked, my bills are caught up, we've bought that hot tub we've been wanting, and I have a little disposal income I probably will get a Harley.

Point #8: I used to own a (Yamaha) 650 cc V-Star Classic. It was a great bike to learn proper riding techniques and cruise around town. I owned it for 10 years before trading it in on a used Harley (Electroglide) Limited. The Harley weighs almost twice as much as the V-Star, 900+ lbs vs. about 500 lbs, yet I can do things on my Harley WITH A PASSENGER that I would never dream of doing (or even attempting) on the "little-ish" V-Star, like u-turns on a residential street. The big bike seems to make maneuvers such as this easy.

The big thing about "I still have my hearing" is that most hearing damage on a bike is due to wind noise, not your exhaust.
And now for something completely different: I bought a Suzuki M90 Boulevard because I wanted a liquid cooled engine (I live in the city, commute on my bike, and didn't want to roast my nuts; if HD had made a liquid cooled motorcycle in my budget, I'd have bought that). Looking back, I should have bought a different bike, as the aftermarket support for an M90 is garbage and that is part of the reason why I got a good deal. Even a more obscure modern HD gets tons more aftermarket support than my bike.

MAYBE I’M JUST LUCKY WITH THIS BIKE, but I bough a 1984 Yamaha XV 700 for under 1000 with full windscreen, real leather saddlebags, no tears in the seat or sissy bar, it has a shit ton of chrome, no dings or dents, and under 19000 miles. In one year, I doubled that, and now it’s pushing 80000. NO ENGINE PROBLEMS AT ALL! What sold me on it was the driveshaft instead of a chain or belt. The sissy bar is very usable for my trunk which can hold a 24 pack of water plus other groceries. Not to mention what I could pile in the saddlebags. I thought I would buy this until I could save up for a Harley or an Indian, but I love this bike. It has never broken down, and the famous problem with the starter clutch I solved with the removal of the spring, buying a brand new gear for around 60 bucks, and putting on a four brush starter.

I dunno man, I kinda disagree with a lot of this video. I got into my very first bike, a 2020 V-strom 650, looking for most of the stuff they were putting down in this list. I wanted a bike that was practical as motorcycles go (Tons of luggage options and aftermarket support), wasn't loud and obnoxious, would be low maintenance and reliable, and while I wanted it to have the power and range to go on long highway road trips I wasn't looking for a monster of a machine. I just wanted something I could use to tour with one buddy and go ride some off road trails with another while getting the most for my money. I commute to work daily on it when I can during the summer months and I think I got a solid machine for a great price. Not all folks looking for a motorcycle are lookin' to be up in everyone else's face about it, some just want to have a bit of their own fun.

As someone who has loved Harleys my whole life and been riding and working on them for almost three decades, there's one serious problem that I've never encountered on any of my Japanese bikes, i.e. you can't let a Harley sit very long before they just rust to pieces.
Harley owners today are basically the exact same people who bought Harleys 50 years ago. The younger generations don't want to spend all morning washing and polishing all that chrome before they take it out on the road which is probably why Harley is building all these blacked out no-nonsense bikes now. Even so, I don't think that's going to save Harley.
As much as I practically idolized the bikers and gangs thundering down the highways when I was a kid, the novelty has worn too thin for me to take these clowns seriously anymore. After hanging out on poker runs or riding only a few miles with these guys I suddenly realized that the vast majority of them are complete imbeciles.

I still don't understand why chrome gets so much hate lately. It's a high luster, protective, corrosion resistant coating (like, you know, paint) with the added benefit of actually being hard wearing (unlike paint). Sure, covering an entire bike in chrome is a bit much, but for accents and accessories I don't see why people dump on it so much. It's easier to clean and less likely to scratch, the only real downfall is that it doesn't really come in multiple colors.

I've owned 2 Harleys and one metric. There was always something going wrong on the Harleys. We used to say, "If if doesn't have an oil leak, it's not a Harley". But I did enjoy riding them most of the time. When I got my metric, I really liked how light and nimble it was, and how much more advanced it was than the Harleys. Never had much of a problem mechanically. But it didn't look as good and wasn't as comfortable as the Harleys. So if I want something that looks good, is comfortable for all day rides, but is also light and nimble with modern features, I'd probably go with something like the Triumph Speedmaster as it seems like the best of both worlds.

I recently got back into riding. I am 57 yrs old and was seriously looking for something I could commute to work. My drive to with is 64 miles round trip and the Hemi Magnum was eating me alive in gas. Seriously over 550 dollars a month. I am past the point in my life for weaving through traffic and knee grinding twisties. I like the big obnoxious cruisers but did not like the price tag of the HD. I researched for about 2 months. I ended up with an 03 Honda VTX 1800S. Only 8K miles and snagged it for about 4k. It had been a while since I have mounted a bike so the weight was a thing for sure. A few months later though and I barley notice. Now I know this isn't the fastest thing out there but as they say, "no replacement for displacement". That 120 LB Ft of torque is a kick in the pants. And I feel pretty safe on the interstates with this monster. I know, should have just got an HD, but honestly, I did not want to pay twice as much for possibly a lesser bike. I have always had Hondas and they just run. Which is what I was looking for in a machine. And PS. I do have full gear. I am not into having my skin and brains all over the asphalt.

Honestly, if money were no object I probably would have gotten a Harley for my first bike. As a kid I rode on the back of my brother in law's HD and thought all bikes were HD until I was a teen. Always wanted one and now, I'm not so sure. I purchased a 2004 Honda Shadow 750 and I love her! She was far easier to handle and ride than the Harley I learned on during my MSF. The clutch and throttle were both very forgiving and I didn't feel like I was sitting on a child's bike. She is loud and beefy enough for me. Also, it's a shaft driven bike which takes the chain maintenance out of the equation. I know we are discussing new bikes for newbs, but I cannot help thinking that beginners should not be buying new anyway.
Off topic, I appreciate you having a lady rider join your show. While I love you and Spite, and you two are a big reason I finally got up on 2 wheels, why not add a weekly or even a monthly show where it's just her. Ya know for us gals. A woman has unique needs on a bike. Like a lower seat height for example. And it seems she digs cruisers. Most of the female riders I see are on street bikes, so it's cool to see another girl on a cruiser.

Why I didn't by a Harley? When I walked into the dealership in 2015, I wandered around for about 15 minutes before I was even acknowledged by the sales person. After talking to him, he decided that I could not afford it, so I went to the Yamaha dealership across the road, was welcomed there immediately. Fell in love with a used 2012 Roadliner, (was looking to buy new, but what the hell only had 4000 KM on it) Paid cash drove it home and called the Harley dealer to let them know my impression of the way the do business. I guess I wasn't the right fit for them. Won't darken a Harley dealership again because of that.
