    Thank you to everyone who has gone on this journey with us! CG has become one of our absolute favorites and it’s been such a treat to get to experience it with everyone! Our next series reaction is out now for our YT/Patreon members (Cowboy Bebop 1-2) and will be out on YT a week from today! 👏 We’re also cooking up some cool stuff for the channel that we’ll be posting about soon! 👀

    The poetic irony of Lelouch’s original goal of wanting to live peacefully with Nunnally, and Suzaku wanting to die for his sins, only for them to get their respective goals instead, is a great capstone to both of their character arcs. Even way back in episode 1 Lelouch said, “the only ones who should kill are those prepared to be killed.” My favorite anime to date, so happy that both enjoyed it!

      It is poetic irony and the big lie - Suzaku wanted to live with a beautiful women and Leluch wanted to win the world for his ambitions. They did a better world, but it was complicated motivations.

    My read on the interaction between Toto and Kallen is that both of them actually fully realized what's happening, but when Toto is about to verbalize it, Kallen corrects him to state the intent of going along with it, so by stating that it's Zero, she's shaping that as the reality.

    Fun facts from the interweb:
    Lelouch believed that you had to start a rebellion/work from the outside to achieve peace, while Suzaku thought the opposite-and in the end, both their views were needed to make their dream a reality. Lelouch took Suzaku's philosophy and took over as Emperor, and Suzaku took Lelouch's philosophy and became Zero.
    The appearance of Zerozaku has the same music as Zero's debut in R1, when Lelouch uses Geass on Jeremiah in front of a global audience.
    At different points in R2, when Lelouch has doubts about continuing, he gets told by Kallen to continue lying to her until the end to free Japan, and by Suzaku to turn his lies into truths and work with him to make things better. And during the Zero Requiem arc he lies to Kallen to free Japan (and to prevent her from suffering with him in his Zero-Approval Gambit), and he works with Suzaku to make all Zero's talk about making a better world actually true. - Drakyndra
    The Geass symbol looks like a bird in flight. Folded cranes are used throughout the series as a symbol for a wish. Near the end, Lelouch reflects that Geass is like a wish...
    Lelouch and Suzaku both gained power from performing a noble act. Lelouch ended up in the terrorists’ truck because, unlike the other people standing around, talking, and taking pictures of the crash, he went down to see if anyone was hurt. Suzaku refused to shoot his best friend, even under threat of discharge or death, so he was wounded and Lloyd and Cecile found him. This led to them allowing him to pilot the Lancelot.
    I'm not sure if this was deliberate, but I've noticed something interesting about the episode references to Lelouch as a demon as well as his tendency to speak of himself this way. Lelouch has a much remarked similarity to Light in Death Note, but of course, Light always refers to himself as God. This really underscores how different the two characters actually are
    It always bugged me that in R2 the mechas always explode after receiving fatal damage, something which happened less in R1. But then I realized that the new mecha were built after the conquest of Japan, the worlds largest supply of sakuradite, which was used as a mecha power source. The knightmares were upgraded with more sakuradite, and thus made big explosions.
    There's also the audio drama that shows how Clovis originally decided to take that position. He clearly has no inclination towards war and politics, and no desire to involve himself in it, but in the Britannian royal family, if you're not a soldier, you're trash. Cornelia and Schneizel are incredibly rude to him and he just takes it. Then he tells them that he has accepted the position of viceroy of Area 11, and they're shocked and they don't think he can do it. He tells them he wants to do it to make Lelouch's "final resting place" peaceful for him, for the younger brother who never knew how much Clovis cared for him. Euphemia tells Clovis that Lelouch sent her a letter and mentioned making friends with a boy his age in Japan. Clovis says that he thinks he should be gentle to the Elevens in that case, since Lelouch had a friend among them. Both Cornelia and Schneizel tell him that he can't let himself be soft, and that a viceroy should be ruthless.

    • @alderinjan
      @alderinjan Před 18 dny +5

      @@JaegerFelipe Other thoughts on Clovis from the people of the internet:
      For all the time he's alive, he's basically your typical Smug Snake, incompetent but callous ruler, who perhaps earns a bit of sympathy for his death but is otherwise just someone to showcase the evils of the Britannian Empire and let Lelouch have his Curb-Stomp Battle. Then the rest of his appearance (or rather, when he's referred to) spend their time deconstructing this notion: he clearly loved his family, he was a fairly talented artist, he even treasured all of his visits with Lelouch when they were younger, despite the fact that he always lost their games of chess - not the reaction you'd expect he of the hopeless ego to have. Even his most horrendous action, the demolition of the Shinjuku ghetto, is, if not justified, certainly given an excuse - it becomes abundantly clear over the rest of the show that Clovis really would've gotten in quite a lot of trouble with a lot very powerful, very nasty people if anything with C.C. had come to light. So, whilst the action he took was still monstrous, one can understand his being a tad irrational with fear at the time - indeed, one even realises that this probably him in the worst light possible. All in all, it becomes apparent that for all his many failings and the typical vices of the Social Darwinist Britannian aristocracy, Clovis was actually quite a nice guy. A Jerkass? Yes, by dint of the job.
      Interestingly the four kids we see Charles either say he likes (Lelouch and Nunnally) or hint at (the photos of Clovis and Euphemia in C's world) are the ones the most removed from social darwinistic goals. Clovis is the closest but he's a painter and aritst by nature and not a politician, leader, and would probably be happier if he had stayed out of politics. The kids he likes are the ones that are the farthest from his false persona as possible.

  • @astralpowers
    @astralpowers Před 18 dny +41

    I've seen that ending so many times from different reactors. I think Kallen and the rest of the black knights knew that the person in the Zero mask was a different person. I think they knew that this crazy scenario was something the real Zero would think of, the real Zero being Leulouch.

    • @shadowfiresword
      @shadowfiresword Před 18 dny +6

      Kallen yes, because she specifically says that it is Zero as she's seen him do the shell game swap multiple times, the rest of the black knights less likely as they never knew that aspect of him.

    • @Jakokokoroko
      @Jakokokoroko Před 18 dny +18

      @@shadowfiresword There is no way Todoh, Ohgi, Rakshata, Xingke etc. aren't smart enough to figure out who this Zero is and that this was planned by Lelouch. The regular Black knight grunts and people like Tamaki probably didn't figure it out unless someone else told them about it for some reason.

    • @shadowfiresword
      @shadowfiresword Před 17 dny

      @@Jakokokoroko What makes you say that? None of the ones you mentioned have seen lelouch do the zero in one place school boy in another location scheme before. In addition to that, baring todoh and kallen none of them have had any meaningful interactions with suzaku.
      Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying they aren't smart by any means, they are especially rakshata, but being smart doesn't help nearly as much as you are portraying against a trick/tactic you haven't encountered or heard about before. I mean hell the entire lot of them were caught off guard when Lelouch pulled the ground out from under them via volcanic eruption in the final battle, despite it being one of his favorite strategems and one they had seen on multiple occasions.
      Now are they likely to recognize that the zero in the end isn't the same one they were fighting with for 90% of the series, obviously. But who is in the suit and why this is being played out on the world stage are likely to slip past them. Especially since as far as the world knows Suzaku died in the last battle and has been dead for months.

    “The only people who should kill are those prepared to be killed”. Lelouch said this at the end of R1 episode 1, right before he used Geass for the first time to kill Britannian soldiers. The exact sequence repeated in R2 episode 1. Now that is what I call foreshadowing.

      There's actually a ton. Kallen told Lelouch to "Play your role like you mean it. Keep fooling us until you no longer can." earlier in the season. There're tons of dialog that you can say foreshadowed this ending. Small things people told him, and he took to heart.

    I'm from China and watched both seasons back in 2009 when I was still a teenage boy. That lelouch's ending left me in shock. In the CN community, fans are divided over the ending: some believe in the Cart-driver theory, while others believe in the Dead-to-the-ash theory. I used to be a Cart-driver believer because of how much I love the main character. However, looking back now, I believe that his death elevates the entire series, making Code Geass a timeless masterpiece and classic.

  • @Rafaela_S.
    @Rafaela_S. Před 18 dny +6

    Here is my take, why I think the ending could be realistic:
    At the start of the show, we had Britannia as a super power, dominating a huge portion of the world, we had china which could be a super power, but had a lot of intern problems like corruption, the EU which isn't a super power and a lot of lose countries, with nearly no relevance at that time.
    After the whole princess of China thing, China broke down in a civil war.
    After Lelouch destroyed the order of geass and V.V. died, he created the UFN (United Federation of Nations).
    Which contained most nations of the world (including parts of china, but not all of it), one rule of the UFN was, that no nation can have it's own army, instead they have the Black Knights as an contract force, which most likely contains the soliders of the former armys of the member nations.
    So we technically we had two super powers with the UFN and Britania at that point, with Lelouch as Emporer of Britania declaring war onto the UFN.
    Lelouch won that war, but we can asume that a lot of soliders lost their lives and tons of war materials got destroyed. And Schizel got ordert to follow Zero.
    After that we got a 2 month time skip, in which Lelouch played the evil dictator, but most likely he also conquered the remining Nations and disarmed them, as well as dismantled a lot of his military power, that was not needed to keep control. (At least I would do that in his position at that point.)
    After Lelouch died we got Zero (Suzaku) as Leader of the Black Knights, also the Core Members of the Black Knights, which knew that Lelouch was Zero, as well as Lelouchs inner circle, do know that Suzaku is now Zero. Since either they knew enough to piece it together or they knew of the Plan since Lelouch told them.
    What happend next is most likely that they rebuild the UFN with Britania as a Member this time, since Nunally is most likely temporary leader of Britania. And I suspect she would make the deal to reduce Britanias Voting Power in the UFN.
    They most likely would renew the System that no member nation is allowed to have an army and the Black Knights will be the Peachkeepers again and will be lead by Suzaku for a really long time, since it is unlikely he will die in an unnatural way before his time has come.
    The UFN with Britania should be in control of over 90-95% of the World and the Black Knights should not be a small force. So peace should be gurenteed for a long time.
    Sure there are a lot of internal problems everywhere and Kallen stated it herself, that there a still a lot of problems.
    Also they did not solve world hunger or such things, it was stated that the energy that was focused on wars, is not directed at things like solving world hunger.
    I personally would say we got a stable situation for at least 50 years and regarding what they achieved in these 50 years, there is a good chance that it will hold way longer.
    Most likely after Suzaku stops being the leader of the Black Knights, they will go for a council instead of an single leader, since it splits the power to a bigger number of people.
    How long it will hold after Suzaku is gone, depends on the question how likely it is that the democratic leadership will get corrupt.
    From what I've seen around the world, the less internal crisis a country has, the more unlikely it is that the leadership will get corrupt. Since people would Vote against people that have been found to be corrupt, the more internal crisis a coutry has the more the votes change to people that tell you that they will solve the problem and most likely they are people that seem to be succsessful in live, regardless of how they got there. So the chance increases for corrupt people to get power.
    So it really depends on how the next 50 years develop, while the OG people that know or could guess the plan, who want to keep peace, are in positions of power.

      Earlier when Lelouch first became Emperor he dismantled the nobility and then, stripped and divided their assets. Before the UFN meeting we see the leadership of the Black Knights briefly discussing the positive changes he’d made. In the following two months post defeating Schnizel it’s not hard to believe that his enslaved operatives, working as officials and leaders, wouldn’t have been given orders to target corruption and build in safeguards in the systems they worked in as well.

      The world, after WWII, was very similar to the end of CG. United Nations to mediate disputes. Most of the world being reduced in military might from the war. Us all being united against Germany and Japan (and to a lesser extent Italy)
      And the "perpetual peace" theorists invisioned was over in less than a year as Ruasia and the US began becoming adversarial and Russia began taking advantage of the power vacuum
      We know the Zero Requiem will fail because we saw this sort of thing fail in the real world. Zero just "reset" the world and gave us a chance to restart things/do it better the second time around

    • @mahpell7173
      @mahpell7173 Před 7 dny +2

      You know, the biggest problem with the end that even with all being said and done - the death of Lelouch leaves a massive power vacuum, regardless of his intentions and plans. Uniting against common enemy is known thing for humans, but such alliances don't hold for long before people start fighting over resources and land and their cultures again and again. The logistics of maintaining peace all over the world for a single organisation like Black Knights is an unbearable task, especially since they ought to wait direct orders of UFN Council to proceed.

    • @TheOriginalInferno
      @TheOriginalInferno Před 7 dny +1

      @@mahpell7173 I don't think the Black Knights were a sole military force at that point. From the little we see of in the Epilogue Nunnally was meeting with the UFN. Given the UFN was an alliance made up of many nations like the EU there was far less of a power vacuum. You're right in regards to Britania though, but with Schniezel, Cornelia and Suzaku there I think there'd be a lot of checks in place.
      Still imo, Britania is too big for just Nunnally to rule even with the aspects I mentioned. I think it's more likely that she'd give into demands of independence from parts of the Empire sooner than she'd maintain power while discontent grows to violent resistance. That violence wouldn't survive Lelouch's checks however.
      The biggest aspect in all of this is how long with the symbol of the demon Emperor and Zero be able to effect culture in such a way where leadership is heavily scrutinized? Eventually things will fall apart but if humanity can always point back to a lesson such as the Demon Emperors rise to power, than that can be a mitigating aspect on the oppression of people which might curb violence to some extent. I don't think we as people could get any more than that when it comes to everlasting peace outside of some sort of divine intervention of overwhelming oppression. So in the end, I think you’re right.

    • @mahpell7173
      @mahpell7173 Před 7 dny +1

      @@TheOriginalInferno Agreed. Also, we have an example of alt-verse continuation, where we have independent countries with massive military power. The Geass is also a very big variable, since hell knows how many Users are out there, an how dangerous their powers are. And since in this timeline Lelouch is supposed to be dead completely, there is hardly a worthy opponent for someone with a Geass like Shamna.

    This was a great conversation you guys really understood the material here so bravo. A few notes based on your conversation.
    - Nunnally can read hearts via touch. Only she and Suzaku have "superhuman" level traits in the series.
    - There is peace becauseLelouch chose all world leaders: Lelouch created the UFN, dismantled nobility and made Nunnally Empress of Britannia, Suzaku/Zero protects her like Lelouch always as a Knight of justice, and Schneizel is a brilliant statesman hypnotized to serve "Zero" not Lelouch. All of Emperor Lelouch's staff was pardoned because they were forced and betrayed him at the end.
    - Tohdoh trained Suzaku he knows him anywhere. As you mentioned Kallen realized and bought into Lelouch's miracle "That is Zero."
    - That float was specifically designed so that Lelouch could be with Nunnally at the end.
    - Suzaku wants to die, but to Lelouch the "Live" command is a gift for his friend.
    - Nunnally and Euphy are the only 2 people who were able to resist Lelouch's Geass.

    It has been debunked officially by the Code Geass director that Nunally didnt see any vision when she touched Lelouch's hands. She just realized that he wasn't lying, and that all this was part of the plan. It was in Mook Media 2009 interview. During the screening of the last recap movie, the director also clarified that immortal code doesn't need the code receiver to die first before it could be activated. When Charles fell down after getting shot by Lelouch in R2 ep15, he was already immortal and only trolling his son.

    Its astonishing how much had to be in place for the Zero Requiem to work.
    Two key things:
    He had to separate Lelouch from Zero in the eyes of the Black Knights
    He had to make himself and only himself the enemy of LITERALLY everyone
    The first, he managed by confronting them in person, with Xingke finally refering to him as Lelouch being the enemy of the world instead of Zero. For Schneitzel, Zero and Lelouch were never separate, since he didnt have a connection with either of them beyond adversary. This was important for the geass command to work. Also important that Schneitzel could not see Zero kill Lelouch, as it would have fucked with his command. Like this, Zero was kept being a symbol for justice.
    Secondly, making himself the sole enemy, he had to make a victim of
    - Suzaku: dead
    - Lloyd and co.: switched sides at last minute
    - his army: with the Black Knights knowing about Geass, they knew they were not willing. Also the wording "be my slaves" is interesting since it might also hold the resentment that comes from being a slave, hence they also cheer at the end.
    - Britannia as a whole- abolishing the aristocracy, the royal family and changing the chant to "All hail Lelouch" works to separate him as a ruler from his people, putting Britannia the country on the same level as any other country he overtook.
    - Jeremiah was left to destroy all unnecessary remaining Geasses and I guess to be exiled to an orange farm
    It helps that those deciding the fate of the world going forwards were in on it, forcing them to be better for all the sacrifices to be worth it.
    He also made sure there is a counter to the deadliest weapon in the world, so there is no arms race and blew up the biggest Sakuradite mine in the world.
    The two issues I found were:
    If anyone supported tyrant Lelouch and his policies without being Geassed because they were some kinda fanatics. There is always someone like that, in such a big population...
    If any conspiracy theorist questions why he was killed with the same sword he himself was waving around at the deciding battle.

    Most other people have mentioned all the other little things about the ending so I will try to make my thoughts brief... try: great ending, part of Suzaku's arc was seeing how he would be punished for his sin against his father and in the end, I think in the end him ironically being forced to be a symbol of the worlds freedom is fitting. Lastly a fun little thing to note is that when we see Kallen at the end, she's in her uniform, but her hair is like when she's in the Black Knights, giving us a visual that she can be the real her in this new world.
