The girl who sometimes works with the main cast but often is a lone wolf out for herself is VERY Lupin III, and it's a pretty great formula to draw from. (I know the trope predates Lupin III, which if anything is getting it from OG Sherlock Holmes stories, but I think it's pretty obvious Cowboy Bebop draws at least some of it's DNA from Lupin).
Mehgan reactively dancing to the ecoterrorist music while having a completely bewildered look on her face was the laughter that I needed to start my day. Thank you for this. Actually, every time Mehgan just starts dancing when the soundtrack kicks in, is great, because I see it as her silently acknowledging that the music is a banger. Even if you aren't into jazz, it's one of the best anime OSTs of all time.
The best part of episode 3 is that the chip was likely translateable by Ein the data dog, so Spike literally throws away a fortune without realizing it.

The biggest event that explains the setting of this universe is only briefly touched on and barely ever mentioned. But something MAJOR happened ~50 years ago...and it's been a generation since then and humanity has mostly moved on from it despite how it changed everything. The show does not really dwell on how effed up the event was when it happened, it's just a historical fact for these people now.
Faye might have one of the best character intros ever. I'll geek out about their spacecraft: Spike's Swordfish is a racing model - check out how far he was from the gate to just barely escape. That thing is fast. Faye's Redtail is a military model, far superior to the police models you see throughout the series. Check out its target acquisition capabilities - it still kept track of all the viral missiles even after they split.
The Bebop crew’s personal craft all have such great details and depth. I love how they tell us more about the characters just with their designs aesthetics and functionality.
This show is full of references! Spike is Bruce Lee and his fighting style and philosophy are straight out of Lee's book The Tao of Jeet Kun Do. Episode 1 is an homage to spaghetti westerns and Spike mentions "a fist full of wulongs" a reference to Clint Eastwood's movie Fist Full of Dollars". Hakem is Kareem Abdull Jabar who fought Bruce lee and I believe Mother is a Creula Deville reference. The Searat gang is parody of 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willace. And you already noticed that the episodes are songs. This show just has so many layers you're going to love it!
Honestly, Faye's full story is just heartbreaking, once you get more backstory. But, her presence is so pivotal to the Bebop crew. She is a true Honky Tonk femme Fatale.

So, the eco-terrorist, as I've always taken it, was someone who... yes, wants to protect wildlife, but has really become someone who cares about it less for the preservation side of things, and more simply because... she hates humanity. Also, I don't think that her "sons" were actually her biological children. I think it is more in a "she is the mother figure of this terrorist organization." When it comes to the aesthetic of the show (which, for the record, I ABSOLUTELY love), I would describe it as Cyberpunk in a very William Gibson capacity. Yes, it is futuristic with a lot of advanced technology, but humans are... still humans at the end of all of it, and the detritus of humanity is just as inescapable in this future as it is now. Part of what makes me say that is that in Gibson's work, yes. There is advanced technology relative to us, but to these people in the world of the show, it is just... what is normal for them, so they don't treat it with any more reverence than we treat our own computers and smart phones. Also, the Bebop's crew... I feel like _must_ be successful quite a bit of the time, it is just that 1) life in the solar system is expensive, and 2) the bounties that go smoothly just aren't the ones that we get to see. That's my take on it all.
I get what you mean about grounded scifi, high scifi can be good but I am more a hard scifi kinda person. I have a feeling you guys might like The Expanse, extremely grounded and realistic scifi where the physics and portrayal of space is probably one of the most realistic I have seen, as well as probably the most grounded look at the 2300s and the expansionary period in human history where we are branching out into our system, no hyperspace, no shields, no artificial gravity, just linear acceleration based gravity, high caliber PDCs, and thin armor between the characters and a little fresh air lmao. Either way it does have the issue that the first season is a mystery and it does most of it's worldbuilding by ep 8 without much straight exposition. That and the pacing of the books in relation to the show is a bit odd making the first book come to an end partway through S2, I always tell people when you reach the actual end of the book/season YOU'LL KNOW. But that's just my pitch I usually shill the show with, if you have seen it sick, but if not even if you don't do any kinda content on it I gotta recommend. Easily the best scifi in the last decade.
Faye is extremely talented at losing all her money on gambling because she makes bets on stuff she can't control, like horse and dog racing, or lottery numbers. I would imagine if she bet on cards instead, she could make tons of cash. But that's not thrilling to her.

Just so we're clear. We are not following their every day life, just cut and slice of the thing for the show. They work and collect bounty off screen a lot, which is why they aren't broke abd destitute. What we see is the story, what happen in between is the "normal" boring bounty hunter "life".
I'm sure you're already there due to the lag of filming to posting of videos...but the next episode is basically the template for fan favoritism across multiple genres.

The way Spike walks casually walks is also very Lupin III inspired.
