After bridging communications with Houston in the only module that possesses such a capability, Gordo and Tracy are given instructions on how to prevent the ensuing nuclear meltdown on the moon. Since there weren't any pressure suits present at the time of the Russian assault, they had to make do with the materials available to prevent a nuclear catastrophe that would have otherwise left Shackleton crater uninhabitable for generations.

Oh right, I guess people can't understand sacrifice without knowing one of the characters is a narcissistic drunk and the other has severe psychological problems (aswell as being a drunk) and that neither had any business being in space if not for their friend gundecking them into the program. If it wasn't for all that amazing backstory we'd all just be scratching our thick monkey craniums wondering what is going on.
Funny, when I watched Chernobyl I had no problems empathising with the three divers who volunteered to go into the reactor building stop the feed water lines thus saving everyone despite never being implicitly shown their extramarital affairs and alcoholism.

The drama between these was alright, it wasn't over the top, unlike some of the other dramas.
The drama between peanut engineer and that girl serve as a bonding session to get them to work as a team in the end, setting her up for the mars mission in season 3.
Having a story about selling the bar and shagging your best friend son just doesn't serve the greater story or add anything.

@@lachyt5247 i think thats what made it so beautiful, they had an actual arc, ofc the sacrifice of the three divers was heroic and u could feel for them, but I doubt anyone actually cried for them because they weren't invested in their stories or characters.
These two characters go from heroes who deserved to be in the space program, then to fallen heroes and drunks who used nepotism to get their way into fame etc, and then back again being the champions of earth for saving every single person on the moon and every person who comes after them.
their backstory is what gives their sacrifice (which already has a lot of weight) so much more weight. I doubt u would want "astronaut 1" and "astronaut 2" to be saving the moon base over "tracy" and "gordo".
its not about "understanding sacrifice" - its about character and emotional response, which without background or development, is incredibly hard to illicit from the majority of the audience.
Sure, you can claim to "empathize" with the divers, but did u cry? I'm sure u didn't. And just because you didn't get an emotional response or "cry" from the characters in the season finale of FAM then that doesn't invalidate the connection others had to the characters because of the drama/background the writers gave their characters.

Even that i would love to see all characters to survive, there is a "small" problem, in 1995 which would be take probably season 3, they all would be quit old, they simply need to get there some new characters in order to continue the story. When Daniel and his boyfriend Viktor attempt to cross the English Channel in an overcrowded dinghy of migrants to bring Victor home from Spain the boat to capsize in the middle of the night. Viktor survives, but Daniel’s body washes up onshore, dead. Gray. Lifeless. Eyes open. Sort of like how they looked in this death scene.
