I honestly spent my first year flying with eachine vr d2 and I wouldn't go back and change that. I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to be getting into fpv as much as I am now. For $60 they did the job and got me addicted. Now I own HDOs. I still use the eachine box goggles to share the experience with others.

These series are so helpful for us people just starting, I get excited every time you release a new video. I bought a taranis, trained over a hundred hours in the sim, bought a whoop as you suggested, and box googles (eachine ev800d) because at the end of the day I feel I'm still gonna use them because they can transform into a monitor (already modded my taranis to hold the monitor). Thanks so much for explaining everything so easily, it means a lot to me! I cant wait to learn more stuff and become a 100% pilot!!!

  • @MATDURANT

Might I suggest a “Field Kit” episode. Having started FPV this year, I didn’t know what to bring with me at the beginning. Simple things like extra screws or a screw driver to tighten screws. I don’t know if you want to go as far as mobile chargers and portable soldering irons, but some basic things to keep you flying might be a good idea since we will probably crash a few times

I think just about anyone getting started should begin with something like the eachine ev800 box goggles. Yea they are bulky but they are cheap and look good. Big screen and diversity for under $100. I have personally tried fat sharks and still prefer the box goggles. For me sitting in the front row gives me the best feeling of immersion. Plus i dont think recommending such expensive equipment to someone new is a good idea. If the barrier to entry is too high most ppl are just going to walk away.
I think a lot of reviewers have gotten so used to the best (and often free) stuff they dont realize how much fun can be had on the cheap. My buddy got a wizard on sale, ev800 and a jumper radio. With a few batts he spent less than $300 all in and is having a blast. Will he upgrade later probably but if he was looking at spending a grand just to get started he probably wouldnt have tried.

This is a great video series full of the info I wish I could of had 3 years ago haha. I was that beginner that started on the low end and coulda/shoulda bought a better radio, better antennas, better quad. Now I'm at the point where I try to keep people that are interested in the hobby from making the hundreds of dollars wasted mistake I did, buy a good to great radio, goggles, batteries, chargers. If you start out very cheap it will cost you in the long run. Thanks for the constant knowledge brother!

My first pair of goggles was Eachine VR D2 Pro box. I always thought my camera was out of focus. Another thing I noticed is that when I was recording there was a quite noticeable lag in the video. I just got Fat Shark HDOs today based largely on your points of consideration and I'm so glad I did. I now understand that it was never my camera that was out of focus. No more lag while recording and I have much more confidence with my flying as I can see clearly. I regret wasting the $80 on the VRD2s in the first place. At least my kids can now ride along. Mr Steele has good advice if you know you're in it for the long haul. Thanks Mr Steele!

I started in Feb '18 and deviated from Steele's recommendations a little bit with a 3" instead of a Whoop and with box goggles. A few months later I had HD3s and a Whoop. So yeah, the How To FPV series is wisdom that's worth following, even if you don't yet fully understand why it's wise.

I appreciate your unapologetic approach to offering advice. Sure, I may not agree with everything you've suggested, but I'm not the guy with years of applied experience and over 200,000 subscribers am I? The EV800D will always make a good companion set if you can afford it. When you start flying, your friends are going to want to see what you see, and since you can use them like goggles or a screen, it can be more entertaining for groups. That said I couldn’t agree more: if you can only afford 1 set, get a decent set.
    Thanks for the series Steele

Dear Mr. Steel, thank you for mentioning spending a little more for goggles and I completely agree with literally everything you stated. I learned the hard way. I went cheap and listened to my UAVFuture friend and his choice of goggles and got aomway v1 commanders. Soon, I realized this was a mistake and bought a pair of fat shark hdo’s. The someways were $250 and it wasn’t worth it. I recommend spending the money on fat sharks and also I still recommend people don’t buy a Qx7.. but instead spend more and buy x9d plus from Taranis. It made my life easy when I wanted to upgrade to crossfire micro and was plug and play. I’d recommend the HDO’s for rapidfire plug and play $$$$ 💰 💴 💵 .

whoa long series. Yo I've been rocking the 40$ eachine vr007 since i started like a year ago and i get range and i still rip!!!!.I am saving up for hd3's but the bills man =[
YOU DON'T NEED FATSHARKS TO START FPV! although its highly encouraged! I've learned a lot with the 40$, but I've used my friends HD3'S and it made me into a better pilot. The resolution you get from fatsharks helped me see a lot i cannot see in my 40$ goggles.
I learned a lot from this video. Thanks!

man, I tried skyzone and flysight goggles after having a box set that came with a crappy hubsan storm. after wasting money on the other sets, and having a hell of a time cause of latency, resolution and fov issues I found a set if hd3 with rapidfire reciever. now it's much better view, less likely to outfly the video and light weight. sure it was expensive and not the oled of the hd0 but I wanted larger fov and still high quality. it's seriously one of the most important investments for fpv

When I started fpv a big disapointment for me was that the goggles were not very immersive at all. I expected it to be like being virtual reality but in fact it is more like watching a tv from a far in the dark... Now I am used to it, but the first time I was really disapointed. Just to let you know what to expect. Great video!

So wish I had this video when I started.
When I started I bought a fly sky radio or whatever it is called. I ended up buying a new radio because it struggled to transmit far +it only had like one good compatible receiver(it was still trash). Also bought a cheap pear of Banggood goggles, they ended up being extremely hard to fly with. eventually I ended up buying a pair fat sharks. So I basically burned $200+ trying to save money.
If you know you are going to love this hobby GO FOR THE BEST you will ends up loosing money trying to save it trust me.

You can trust Luigi. Ive had the same exact gear for almost 3 years now. At this point I really need to upgrade to a new Taranis bc I have worn mine OUT. I took his advice back in the day when I started, with a Rotor Riot 5"Alien with KISS FC & now I have 2 of those & a Steez. Apart from smashing things irresponsibly, most of these parts can withstand crashes & provide you a long life of usage.

Thanks for the info! There's something I can't seem to find online though: Will FPV goggles connect to any drone that can connect to a phone? At least assuming the goggles come with a built in receiver? I'm specifically wondering about the Contixo F24 pro. I think it works with a 5ghz bandwidth.

  • @maxiemusfpv198

I gotta say your right. Going the cheap way is the most expensive way in the long run. When i first started, metally i was going the cheapest way, i bought 40$ goggles.they were ok but not cutting it, i went and bought a screen that was 60$, didnt cut it, i got some cheap 100$ box goggles, they worked ok but really heavy bulky and not enjoyable. I have now spent 200 some dollars. I have now bought the skyzone sky02. Im loving it and it was 269$. I could have soent the 269 the first time instead of what i did spending 469 going the cheap way. So really its the longer expensive way that is just not worth it. Get the good stuff first, youll have a good experience.

Informative video Steele, thanks. I notice you take the antennas off your goggles for storage, are there any concerns about wear on the SMA connectors on the antennas / receiver by repeatedly connecting and disconnecting the antennas?

  • @padcom
    @padcom Před 5 lety +2

In the beginning I knew goggles were the one piece of equipment I won't change all that often so I opted for FatSharks (the Dominator HD so you can tell it was quite some time ago). My only experience before with goggles of any kind was the VR1 (some of you might remember those 20+ years old piece :D) and I knew I wanted something at least better than those were. So I collected some money, waited for the Dominator HDs to be available and I bought them for like $900 in the days.
I was pretty happy with them for quite a while. I mean I could watch real 3D videos on them, they had 60-something degrees field of view but ultimately the real disappointment came from the size of the screen. I mean c'mon: is that really what you would call "an immersive experience"??? The screen was blurry as hell on the edges (even the -2 correction lenses didn't do much to solve that), small and with a diversity receiver the battery was done in a matter of 60-70 minutes tops.
Then, a few longer years after, I have discovered the EV800's. I bought them as spares for my son to follow along. Didn't use them even once! Then there was that day when I forgot the FatSharks and only had the big nasty EV800 in my car. I hated them for the size and literally didn't have then on since day one. But man.... when I put them on the screen was... O MY GOD!!! BIG ASS doesn't even begin to describe it! And sharp edge to edge!!!! Later on I found out that the best receiver I have had at that time was not even close when it came to sensitivity compared to the EV800s and so the good old FatSharks are now sitting on the shelf rusting. I personally will never buy anything else as those fit my face perfectly, give me the big-ass screen that I always wanted, sharp image top-to-bottom and left-to-right and with the 800D's DVR (which with all due respect to FatSharks does finally do a good job in recording the feed unlike the FatShark's DVR which is in my opinion a piece of crap) I finally have goggles I can rely on in my FPV adventures.
To bottom line it: I have no fucking idea why people are so amazed by the fatshark goggles. In FPV you rearly (if ever) use the (amazing!!!) Trinity head tracker (awesome piece of engineering btw!!!), you get a small, blurry screen for a price that one could buy not one but at least 4 pairs of EV800Ds. Not to mention (as someone here already pointed out) that you can take them apart and you have a fully functional 5" monitor!
For me, personally, the EV800D is the top of the notch product on the markey Today for more reasons that I can count.

Do you have experience with USB OTG receivers (for android phones), and do you recommend them as a cheap start? They can be used with VR goggles (like chinese cardboard goggles, gear vr, daydream etc).
Depending on their price, could they provide good image quality, and low latency close to more professional FPV goggles?

You've got me thinking that maybe I can save some cash and get HD2 or HD3 to maintain some of the FOV I'm about to lose when I say goodbye to the Headplays. I get the impression it may take me a good number of packs before I'm comfortable flying from the back of the theatre =)
