    I've never understood the whole doing it for respect thing and I'd never really seen the point in glamorizing crime or anything that will end with hand cuffs.. all I can say about the situation is when I see Graff on the streets It makes me smile that folks are out there doing there thing.. anytime I may have done my thing it's always come from a place I don't understand kinda like the feeling you get to pick up an instrument ect... and I 100%agree if your someone who doesn't have the common sense... experience... and most importantly that second sense that allows you to know if something is or isn't a good idea... if your shaking with a can in your hand wondering if what ur about to do is a good idea just know it's not bahahahaha... no one has ever gone out and smoked a town making themselves red hot and thought it was something that at the very least has a possibility of having a bad outcome... and to anyone whose super cocky and thinks they got it your a fool to not realize that by nature Graff always has a large percentage of the outcome that you simply cannot control... and the last thing is if or when your caught it's deff not a crime anyone will think ur cool for doing lol most will think ur an idiot.. the court is gonna throw the book at you possibly attempting to blame you for everything ever written on anywall ever.. and no one person in county isn't gonna just laugh at you becuz your in jail for something associated with preteen kids trying to be bad... plus even if you get really good at Graff it's something that if you don't wanna end up in jail no one should know about which means you're gonna assume all that risk and if done properly you'll never for one sec be recognized for what you've done... there's a reason those who have done a lot of stuff or are active don't ever show there face lol you'll prolly get the same kinda advice asking someone how to rob a bank lmao I can't believe people actually do that... especially now a days with digital media being the way it is if your really into art and want to put it out there and be known for how slick your work is you have to be doing it thru online type of means.. and most who post spray art online are showing picture of walls that are hidden and not out In public spots...

      First let me say, thankyou for writing such a thoughtful comment, you knocked this out of the park. You summed this up in such a direct, experienced and honest way to where you left no holes in the points made. You make alot of valid points, I get alot of dms asking just what grim said. And I agree with 100% either your built for it or your not. And as the old saying goes real recognizes real. So im abit hesitant on what I tell people. Some of these kids don't realize it's just a phase in their lives. But one never knows until they put some time in. Graffiti is like a drug for me, I’ve been doing it since I was 12 and It has grown to be one of my only hobbies and the other hobbies I do have tie into graffiti.
    I can quit but I don’t know what I would do afterwards, when I get a pay check I think about how much I’m gonna put into my paint, I think about how much I can put into a trip to another city to get up, I think about graffiti with every aspect of my life it’s quite embarrassing from an outside perspective that I have dedicated a large portion of my life into painting on walls and trains with almost no returning benefit.

    I agree. I've met grown adults that just barely got into graffiti & I've explained to them that you can still get in trouble such as catch felonies, fines, prison time, gang charges (if in a crew), etc. Most tend to have this attitude of "graffiti is harmless, what's the worst that can happen?" & they're in for a rude awakening if that's what they think.

As a person who started in twenties I had an interest but no way to start at a young age and was incRcedated as a 16 year old until I was 21... After getting through that legal shit (parole, more jail time) I started cuz I was a semi independent person now but I had already fucked up bad enough and had felonies that wouldn't disappear so I'm not worried of getting in trouble again as I've already semi ruined my life already. I lived in a small town for 22 years and it was really fun doing illegal graffiti when I was a kid. In the beginning it was hard for the cops to catch us cause we were just a few close friends doing it, but over the years more writers appeared and the cops just got crazy and out of control. A lot of patrols, harassing kids on the streets to find paint on them, or to get them to snitch.
    When things got heated I kinda got out of it and started pursuing other hobbies. Now I work in a big city and would have money to pay fines if that is the case, but I almost never have time or energy to do this anymore. Despite this, I still never got out of it completely. I still purchase like a bag of cans every 6 to 12 months and just keep it in my car, and once I feel the time is right I go out and do a big piece in like a chill place. I still enjoy doing this as it was a big part of my childhood and the adrenaline rush of running away if somebody comes near is just a good way to get out of the monotony of adulthood and working a 9 to 5 job, but I would not do this everyday like I used to. It is definitely not worth the risk and I'm glad that I have other hobbies that I can do daily and just keep graffiti only for very special occasions

    I simply get confused on the terminology these days, I remember my start in 89 with well versed writers who simply called it painting, even when it was illegal, and even into the 90's as our country started to get the magazines, movies and the whole hip hop influence encroached "GRAFFITI" was a term used strictly for illegal works.
    Anyone painting legally was just that, Painting, doing a mural or sometimes called aerosol art/ists.
    The whole idea has stuck with me to this day, as far as i am concerned if it is not illegal, you're not doing graffiti.
    Naturally you can imagine how confusing i find this channel among others.
    I recently had my little brothers friend say he saw my 'graffiti piece', i asked which one ? when he told me i said that's not graffiti, i just wrote my own name with spray paint on my own shipping container on my own land. I compromised when he said it was a graffiti style, but to me it will never be anything more than me writing/painting my name, (not a tag), anywhere i chose to do it.

I knew what the costs where and was willing to pay them, so yeah Im that kinda person. But I tell the unsure the same as you, if your in it for the art then follow that, I don't let society define my path and you shouldn't let writers define yours. The art can lead to something more, the crime just leads to punishment...and good friends and memories ;P And even if you do follow the crime path, still concentrate on the art and you could become the next Doke, Smoe or Jimmy C (SOE) and spend the rest of your life doing awesome stuff.

    I do graffiti to go over perverse - vandalism, & its fun + it's in my blood as my dad used to be a graffiti artist. With that being said I've beaten 3 court cases on the premise that I'm writing positive messages, & it's my right as freedom of expression here in Canada - I learned that if one isn't bothering anyone & is writing something positive on public property there are laws that legitimately can be spoke of like freedom of expression that really can get people out of any jurisdiction system troubles,
    and earn a carte blanche in that regard. On someones property however without permission that's when real problems occur, or if really vandalizing with spiteful messages or negative slurs, covering landmarks or signs, etc.

I live in an ok neighborhood now. but it's still not the greatist. so i felt like that was the better option. I also have ADHD which makes it hard on me to get out of stuff i already put my mind to. I feel like illegal graffiti isn't for me and it most definetly probably isn't for me, since i've already been caught, but i knew that would happen. When i started illegal graffiti i accepted the punishments that would come with it, granted i've only done a couple of hollows and tags. and on the other side im ignorant and stupid for doing it bc, why would i risk my freedom for a dumb name. but i feel as if i need to be noticed for some reason and as how hard my life already is, why would you make it harder with a stupid name

      lol i can appreciate that though. That feeling of conquering i mean. For me personally, i feel like graffiti helped me get some confidence. I was a confident kid but when my step dad died (no need to feel bad it was a long time ago now) i clammed up and shut everything out. Graffiti really helped me come back out of my shell, and i feel like that was largely due to the confidence you get conquering things in illegal graffiti. Looking back at it, i wouldn't change it for the world but i recognize there likely were better ways to go about that. Im happy i did it though so i can understand your perspective i think.

Also, dont know why youre comming after me on this when this video is specifically talking about literally aspiring writers who ask if they should get into it, this video isnt about active writers. Im not trying to stop active dudes from doing what they do, thats their business. With that said though, anyone who breaks the law with graffiti specifically certainly doesn't have their priorities straight. Not that I'm judging because I loved bombing when I used to and I love bombers who still rock, it's just a fact though, if you can't see that you're either actively avoiding it, lying to yourself or aren't mature enough to see you should work on your life.

    I don't wanna be disrespectful, i love your videos and what you're saying is mostly true, but in my opinion not doing illegal graffiti because you got "better options in life" is bullshit. I personally do graffiti because you break out from the ordinary life that everyone lives, experience something that not everyone can understand. they tell you that this is wrong, and tell you to play by their rules. In my opinion you should do what you want, and not what society expects from you, and i think that theres more to life than to live by societys standards. if you wanna do graffiti illegaly and it makes you happy, go on. if not, dont do it. You're right that some people just aren't made for graffiti, and if you need the approval of someone to do it, you should probably not do it. So it would make sense for a European graffiti writer to keep painting illegally because the pros most of the time outweigh the cons. But in America im pretty sure they take graffiti very seriously and if i were to ever live there i wouldnt ever consider writing illegal graffiti :)

    I really think if anyone gives you advice that is commit crimes they arnt really the person to take advice from. Ive done illegal bombing and gotten in trouble for it im just fortunate enough to live in an area that is relatively safe. Not really gangs and graffiti is just a misdemeanor. But damn do you feel real immature and embarrassed when you get arrested for writing your name on a wall.
    Like you arnt kidding when you say people who paint illegally when they got so much going for them are immature and childish but hey i guess im just trying to stay young at heart.

    i agree with the fact that real writers is not gonna ask for graffiti, but dud why are you so salty ?? Like saying that people are immature and they are doing this for nothing, no one cares, your bad at this. All of that its useless and mean AF, i mean jeez take a chill pill.. Ive been doing graffiti for 10 years now and i never heard another writers talk like that, its kind of insulting cuz it feels like you are really saying that illegal graffiti is just completely useless. When you say that graffiti is done by 2 groupes of people "either people that have a really hard life, or people that are stupid" what ??? I think you know that is just no true.
    then the "cuz no saine personne with a happy life is going to look to all the opportunities they have, and say you know what ? i wanna risk everything i have my life and my freedom and my opportunities for the future, in order to put a name up that nobody cares about even thought i suck at this art forme, let me go ahead and do this thing that i suck at, illegally, for the illusion of respect, that no one actually cares about" Sooooo... i think you know that that last sentence is completely wrong, yes there is some people on this earth that care about graffiti and new names, and yes there is some respect in graffiti, i mean looks like you don't respect it at all but some people do. If i resume your point, if your doing graffiti illegally and your not in a ghetto or have a really hard life, you are stupid, not good at this, and more stupid.
    That is actually very insulting to alote of us that just want to do graffiti, some of us have normal life, even boring life some some of them, graffiti is to us is a passion, and a way of living in the city, a way to explore the city, and alote more. So egain, i think if they are asking, yes its probably not for them, but the rest is complet BS.

      Oh no salt at all dude, I mean I myself still get the urge to do it though I don't, and I still love seeing others bomb so I guess I'm still immature and dumb lol. Even so, breaking the law for graffiti is simply an objectively bad decision. You have to agree no sane person would look at illegal graffiti and describe it as a responsible, mature, or smart thing to do.

    • @Snake-gf6uc
      @Snake-gf6uc Před rokem +1

      @@Theartistblock So first of all breaking the law is not necessary bad i think that goes without saying. And what im really mad about is your general tone and some of the really mean shit you said in this video, wich in my opinion goes totally egainst graffiti principales. Like you saying that its useless, and no one is gonna care about it, and your bad anyway.. it kinda look like you are just projecting you own fears on to us. Maybe you think no one can look at graffiti in a responsable or mature way, but thats is YOUR opinion and YOUR vision of graffiti, and not general truth.

      @@Snake-gf6uc i mean this video is about graffiti specifically, not about all crimes. its not about dealing drugs to support a fam, or something, its about graffiti so i dont care about other crimes because that's not what im talking about. this video has little to do with me, it was made from hearing thousands of stories from graffiti artists literally. so this isn't MY anything,. Even so this has much more to do with just good decision-making and logic, personal views are irrelevant when it comes to objectively good or bad choices. Good and bad choices dont care about how you or i feel and good and bad choices dont care bout our views. i explained myself well, and i stand by what i said, if you want to be mad, be my guest, im not going to argue because you got offended.

    • @Snake-gf6uc
      @Snake-gf6uc Před rokem

      @@Theartistblock You know there is more then just good and bad right, the world is not black and white, good versus evil. And of course personal view count, and im not talking about other crimes or whatever, im talking about graffiti, the way your being literally insulting in this video for no reasons and have that mocking tone.
      And if understand your logic it means that cuz you say its a bad choice, then its just true and no one can say other wise because it can get you into trouble so its objectively bad ? But sometimes it can be a little more complicated then that, depending on who you are, where you are..so yes personnel view count. Yes it can get you into trouble but that doesn't mean its objectively BAD, how many sports, or jobs are dangerous and life risking stuff, but people do it anyway, cuz it may have a good side that is worth the risk to some people. I mean other wise if we follow that logic far enough it means no one would ever do anything risky or against the law ever because its "objectively bad" and we all know that is not reality.

    • @Theartistblock
      @Theartistblock  Před rokem

      look dude, normally i sit and debate with people, normally i carefully read the argument people make, and respond with a well thought out response. normally id do that but i simply cant spend my time debating with someone who can't do something as simple as know whats good or bad for them. If you cant see how breaking the law for graffiti SPECIFICALLY is a bad idea then you're either too immature to debate with in the first place or you simply don't know any better and have bad decision-making skills. while I'm saying this as kindly as possible and while I mean no disrespect and I hold no hard feelings towards you I have to say this convo simply isn't worth my time. This is not a debatable topic and to do so only further proves my point as any mature-minded, responsible adult would agree with me.
      Do what you want, this video isn't to convince already involved writers to stop, it was to shed light to hesitant, aspiring writers who specifically wanted advice on the topic. If you took offense then that's on you. for the sake of being productive with my day this will be my last response. sorry friend.
