It's a muskmelon, and a single one of these alone can cost over several thousand Euros. The apple is an Aomori apple, with Aomori being the northernmost prefecture of the main island of japan, and probably the most famous place for apples in asia. The reason you didn't think they were that outstanding was, that here in europe we are spoiled with outstandingly amazing but cheap fruit, but in asia and america, non native fruit generally is by far not as good, and it is in general much more expensive. Especially Japan with its protectorat import policy does not cheaply import fruit, so the standard fruit you get is way worse than that apple, or european fruit in general while already costing a lot more, so these really expensive ones only taste like a pretty good, but very big ones to us. You can also get them a lot cheaper if you buy them where they are produced, as in these kind of shops they pay a lot of attention to the fruit looking very good as well, which drives up the price as well. In Aomori I got an apple like that for 2,50 Euro, but it didn't look nearly as good or was as big as this one. The pear just tastes like that, if you don't like it, the reason is not, that it is not one of the best ones you can get, but just that you don't like the fruit, as its just called that because of similarities in looks and taste, but is actually a completely different fruit, just like japanese plums. And Grapes are actually the most expensive food product per kilo that was ever sold, which was also in japan, with over 10.000 Euro per 100g. The reason some of the are so expensive is that the producers ensure, that every plant/tree and fruit is grown perfectly, and then all fruits but 1 are cut of right after they sprout to ensure all nutrients and sugar goes into this 1 fruit. Because of this, these fruits are often a lot bigger and sweeter/flavorful than regular fruit, but also production is extremely expensive and very limited, driving up the prize. Each fruit is inspected and priced by a committee of experts and than auctiont of to the different retailers, which normally only buy them for the prestige, and don't price them higher, than the actual cost they had themselves. This tradition stems from fruit being a common gift in intercompany relationships and companies wanting to show of how good they do financially, and how important a good relationship with the other company is to them by gifting these fruit, so it's normally not something a private person buys. The apple, pear and tangerines you bought, and probably also the melon and Grapes were most likely not produced like this, as their price is still more on the lower end, which makes it probably one of the best pieces of fruit you can get in japan, that is actually gown there normally, but far from the otherworldish taste you would expect as a european at that price, and that you would get with a several thousand or even tens of thousands of Euro fruits that exist. Alos, if you thought the cheaper grapes tasted better, that is püropably because with these semi expensive fruits they often prioritize cost, looks and size over taste, so that it seem like one of the really expensive ones, so people who want to gift it but don't have the money to buy a really expensive one, can buy a cheaper one that at least looks like it was expensive, or it wasn't completely ripe yet, as these are normally breed to look ripe long before they are, as it is custom to dispülay them for quite a while before eating, so as to be able to enjoy their beauty to the max as well. I am actually starting to think, that most of the fruit you ate either wasn't properly ripe yet, and would have needed to sit under light for a good bit longer, or was meant mainly for display in the first place.
