    220 was used a lot for wedding photography back in the day.

    I hand roll 220 film from 70mm Aviphot 200 areal recon film. I have been told by so many people that this is a worthless endeavor, no one wants 220, especially when it is expired, no one will buy it, etc. Well, so far I have sold some 27 rolls of the stuff over the past year, and now that I know it works, and how to roll it, I advertised a large order and am selling 32 rolls of this stuff this summer!
    Also, correction to the video: the focusing issue you pointed out is… not really an issue. The film is always pressed up against the film rails with either film, the reason some cameras have different settings for 120 and 220 is because running 120 film past a pressure plate calibrated for 220 puts extra stress on some components, because of the thicker film being harder to wind through the back. This is ok for running a few 120 rolls through the back occasionally. But Mamiya in particular found that using 120 in a 220 back consistently (like, shooting many rolls a day, constantly) could cause issues with the advancing mechanisms after some time. So that’s the actual reason there are separate pressure plate settings/backs for 120/220 film.

    this channel is destined for success
    unless kodak prices everybody out of film

      Prices are definitely pushing me to make a video on ‘Film Photography Alternatives’ 😂
      Thanks for your support!

      @@DayneFilm sadly nothing beats the tactile feel of old cameras and messing with film rolls for me. when kodak gold gets over $25 i'll probably just go on photowalks without loading any film just to feel something

    Good video! I love 220 film ... Cinestill actually still tried to make 220 anyway, except the production was going to be just a little too expensive/lengthy to push ahead with at the moment. But they haven't ruled it out in the future! Our best bet is to keep asking for it and to keep buying their film so they grow as a business. Also, Atlanta Film Co. are experimenting with hand rolling 220 cinema film (trimmed 65mm film). Definitely some logistical things to work out there, but it's a real possibility according to posts I've seen.

      That’s great to hear! We just have to keep the conversation/demand alive!

    I guess I was smart (read: got lucky) and bought a bunch of slightly expired 220 rolls before the current price hikes happened.. I’m storing about 50 rolls of 220 (many are various speeds of Portra) in my friges and freezer now. It was the idea of getting 24 medium format exposures per roll that got me serious about medium format gear.

    I still can't fucking understand how a 0.1mm difference can through the focus off enough to warrant a back made for it specifically.
    like if the camera requires the little red window then it's a different story.

    That number thing cant be right because 110 film definitely didn't predate 120 film

    • @DayneFilm
      @DayneFilm  Před rokem

      They had versions of cartridge film back then, from around numbers 106-114 or something like that, and because the 110 we know today was also a cartridge variant, Kodak decided to re-use the number! Sorry i didn’t clarify that in the video, I like keeping it short and digestible. But there will definitely be more discontinued film stock videos in the future!

  • @SantiagoChamo
    @SantiagoChamo Před rokem

    I think you are mixing film stock, like Portra or Pro 400H, with film formats like 120 or 135.

    • @DayneFilm
      @DayneFilm  Před rokem

      Technically Portra 400NC for 220 is both a discontinued film stock AND film format!

      @SantiagoChamo Před rokem +1

      @@DayneFilm yes, technically. But this video is focusing on 220, isn't it?
      You talk about the film stock less than 40 seconds here.
      I am not saying it in a bad way, just saying.
      Anyway, keep making videos. CZcams recommend me you and I am staying 👍
