  • Learning to foil can be a challenge, but driving can be a huge factor in helping people get up and get comfortable. In this video I walk through a few tips on how I approach driving the boat when teaching people to foil.
The basis of my approach is starting slow, keeping the rider on the side of the boat that they'll be riding on, and controlling the throttle by hand rather than setting your speed control. The reason I typically drive by hand when people start out is so that you can adjust the speed to assist the rider.
Because the foil is creating lift, small adjustments in speed help the rider control the wing underneath them. Speeding the boat up will help create more lift, and slowing down will settle the board back down to the water. These are typically pretty small speed adjustments but they can go a long way.
In addition, giving the rider a bit of a turn towards them as they start will help to control the tension in the line and stay directly on top of the board, rather than leaning hard against the line like they might when wakeboarding or wake surfing.
These are the main driving tips that I have found helpful, and if you're looking for more pointers as a rider for getting started foiling, check out these videos below!
