Very nice, just saw this. Considering a saddle since I'm gonna be exclusively public land and don't want a lot of weight... But commercially produced can get to well over $550...

Dude, this is tremendous. I honestly think your sewing will last for decades, but I am with you on leaving nothing to chance and using the knot. Superb video. I'll be making one of these as I already have a couple climbing harnesses. I might get the lightweight Black Diamond.

@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Well... The military webbing I got was too thick for a knot so I doubled it over the whole length of the harness and sewed it in.
Edit: I'm going to add 4 rivets like they have on denim jeans for added durability.
Last season I was mildly aware of the concept of saddle hunting but it seemed a method of hunting I was not interested in even though I already recreationally climb trees regularly. This season I decided to revisit it but was appalled at the prices of everything. Already having all the necessary rope ascension/arborist gear, I was still looking at too much money to get into it so I started researching DYI products. I stumbled across this video and since I already know how to sew, I made my own saddle based on this video. I can't thank you enough.

I'm not sure I would trust my life with anything I have sewn. That's one skill I should have learned back in high school. I rely on my mother-in-law for all my sewing needs. Great job on the saddle.

It's another fun gadget, you did a great job fabricating it. I'm trying to like using the saddle, after using one for one archery season- I went back to my climbing & hang on stands because the saddle required too much movement, kept getting busted even at 25 feet. HOWEVER, I'm not giving up, love how light & packable it is- & there's some spots with no good climber tree's & saddle is the best option.
No doubt it will have a bit of a learning curve. I was already thinking it’ll probably be better early season when there’s more cover. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it 👍

I bought the sit drag and a rock harness to try out before I spent a lot of money just to see if I would like saddle hunting. I really like how you made yours. I may break out a sewing machine and make some modifications to the sit drag. Maybe add a quick release belt and webbing.
It’s really not that hard. Sounds like you have a good plan. Always keep safety in mind 👍
Great job. Have to say that as the Budget sportsman I considered this option, but I just didn’t trust my DIY abilities on this one. Definitely looks like a good option especially with the RCH.

Excellent video, if you do want to get rid of that knot there are some excellent videos showing how to sew webbing together to create a super strong seam that is stronger than a knot. Having said that the knot is not a bad solution and you saddle looks great. Thank you!

Nice 👍. I have that same BOD harness and the waist connection can be tricky sometimes. I believe Black Diamond recommends the buckle be doubled back for safety reasons... I know it feels safe when connected like a normal belt but I guess it’s not 100% safe. Just an FYI. I couldn’t see if you already did that or not in your video but it’s something I didn’t immediately know when I first purchased it. I love the harness and how light it is though. Cool video!
I do loop the belt back through the buckle like the instructions say. I will say the buckle is my least favorite part of the harness. With cold fingers I find it very difficult to feed the strap through. If it had a quicker/easier type buckle it’d be perfect! Thanks for watching my channel. I appreciate it 👍
HuntingFarmer Nice, I figured you did and couldn’t agree more lol. I used that harness with a modified sit-drag last year and confirmed I love saddle hunting. I caved and bought the Crüzr XC a few months ago and it’s not a fair comparison. But your saddle looks much more comfortable than my sit-drag setup!

Very cool. As long as you use good quality materials I don't see any reason why it would't be safe. Or at least as safe as one you would buy. I guess the weak link is the sewing thread, right? I think the stitching pattern and number of stitches is what gives strength to the normally very weak thread? I'm no seamstress so I have no idea, it's just assumption on my part. Looks like it should work pretty well though.

I had a Consew 206RB-2 commercial walking foot sewing machine and made all kinds of stuff with it. ( Duffel bags , Tool Rolls , Motorcycle tie down Soft Straps , lighter holders , etc ). It was a lot of fun making my own gear. But sadly my machine was just to big to take on the road with me , so I sold it to a local upholstery shop before hitting the road to become a full time RVer.

What type of knots did you use on your bridge? I know you have a backup with the harness but it never hurts to do it right. I think you might enjoy a amsteel bridge more and learning how to splice is easy and fun. I wish you had included the cost of everything since that was probably your main reason for doing so. Although I don’t understand trying to cut cost on the saddle then spending around $100 on 2 ropemans instead of a prusik with a tender with similar function.
You make some valid points on the budget aspect! You could definitely use prusiks instead of the ropeman. I had the ropeman for years because I use them in other setups and I use the lineman rope to help hang other stands etc. I used the water knot on my bridge. It seemed to be about the strongest knot for that type of application that I could find. Thanks for watching my video! I appreciate it 👍

Just wondering what made you decide on 1inch tubular over a 2inch seatbelt like webbing. I would think the wider would be more comfortable but I may be completely wrong. Very nice setup!
The simple answer is because that’s what I already had on hand. 😁 I can see that using a wider strap could be more comfortable. I’ve been using the saddle quite a bit and have been learning a lot. Will probably do an update after I use it for the season 👍
I’ve found those intriguing, but feared they’d be uncomfortable so I never pursued it.
They definitely have a learning curve but I’m a sucker for trying something new. 😜 Thanks for watching 👍

Did you use any special thread for the sewing
I used “heavy duty” sewing thread but still CANNOT recommend that my sewing is strong enough to not be a fail point. That I why I used the endless loop in my tubular webbing and always have my sewn saddle coupled with a safety harness at all times. I DO NOT) trust my sewing or the thread with my life. 👍
After looking at some of the prices for a tree saddle, I thought I would just use one of my rock climbing harnesses. I looked on CZcams to see if anyone else had thought the same thing. And yours is the first one I clicked on. I was thinking I would need to build a padded seat, but yours is just the canvas. So after using it, do you wish it was padded or are you satisfied with the design? I have most of the materials you used, from my rock climbing days. I would just need to design a seat for the harness.

Thanks for watching! You basically described my thought process is making my own. I didn’t want to commit to the price tag for a commercially made one before I even knew if I’d like it or it would work with my self filming. I plan to make an update video on the changes I’d make after a season’s worth of use. The short of it is I’d made it slightly bigger. As the weather got colder and the clothing got bulkier I wish the cloth/canvas portion was bigger. I also experimented with bridge lengths and put prussic knots connecting my bridge to my saddle to allow me to adjust tension on how the saddle rides on my backside. 👍

Thanks for watching. I was using a Brothers sewing machine. Not sure what size needle it was (came with the machine). I used heavy duty thread
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial I just bought an $8 2 in heavy duty ratchet tie down that holds 3333lbs and some d rings that Cary 1598lbs and a heavy duty singer and heavy duty thread 💪🏿 I’m a big guy and the harness I was planning to buy was $799 I may buy it only if my diy harness fails to hold me 3ft off the ground .

The cloth portion is 25 1/2" long and is 11" at it's widest point. the tubular webbing loops for the bridge to connect to makes the total saddle 32" long. If I had to do it over I would make the saddle a few inches bigger, both in length and width. (Especially as it get colder and I'm wearing bulkier clothes!!) I plan to make another video after the season discussing the changes I would make after using it for a season.

An excellent 💡 idea Dave , but I feel that you are venturing into a space that could be unsafe . It only takes a moment which you will never know that’s coming.. Your a family man, a heavy set male person , photographing sequence can be too involved.. I’d pass on this where you have the deer 🦌 on your property set out 3 ground blinds considering the wind . I want you around to rustle your feathers at times..You can tell the world that you are fast , but not faster than 32 ft/sec square straight down ..🙏🏿.. Ain’t worth it.. 🌱🌱 These are daises that you should never be pushing up

Farming is statically one of the most dangerous jobs one could have. All that said... we must respect risk and do our best to reduce it 👍
