  • From George RR Martin's "The Mystery Knight."
If you like what you're hearing, be sure to check out my channel, where you can find all of my A Song of Ice and Fire recorded chapters in order in playlists! And leave a comment! I don't care about any youtube algorithm reach nonsense but I love hearing from people who are listening!
I am in no sense a professional reader, voice actor, or what have you. I began this audiobook project some years ago when some friends of mine jokingly said they'd read A Song of Ice and Fire (my favorite fantasy series) if I personally recorded the whole series in audiobook form and sent it to them. Having now made my way almost through the first two books in the series, I decided to join the small community of people who post their own amateur audibook readings to youtube, and share my efforts.
I have no intention of profiting off of the work that is copyrighted to George RR Martin. This upload is a tribute to a series I deeply love, and I strongly encourage you to purchase these books. You won't regret it.
Also I should give full credit to my cat, Claudio, for the frequent background meows and purring sounds you hear throughout.

I have no doubt Maynard is Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers but I love how he talks to Dunk like he's known him for years. Who's to say he doesn't recognize Dunk from that passing glance on the Street of Steel in Flea Bottom

But yeah, the more Dunk looked at Plum the less he saw, is ether caused by his wound an lost blood, or because it is not his face but weaved with shadows or Mummerstrick like Varys.

daemon is kinda a contradictory fellow, as martin likes to write his characters.
On one hand he has the absolute worst friends, and he sees nothing wrong with keeping their company. on the other hand, he also treats people based on their merit, and not their status, as shown with the way he treats both Fireball and Dunk.
he isnt afraid to tell his soon to be vassals off for being asses, but he doesnt force them to be better. he's both charming and gregarious, but he's also not afraid of being very rude against those who act unknightly. which is the contradiction and the irony of the story. Daemon is a relatively good egg, who has been charmed by his more wicked advisors.
in that regard, Daemon is Martin's take on the popular archetype medieval idea of "good king" being led astray by bad avisors, that was pretty well used in the period. now, martin being martin, he refuses to play the trope in the way one would expect. in this case, he decides to actually play the trope relatively straight, by having a relatively likeable guy who's main flaw really is that he listens to his evil advisors. the deconstruction of course comes from the fact that this really does make him a terrible king(at least in war time, he might have done better in a time of peace) for invading westeros.
The blackfyres needs a Black Dragon. what they got... was a fiddler. not withouth talents, and worth, but not a conqueror.
of course, there is another parallel here in this tourney that is not rhaegar. namely the story of baelor's son, and how the tourney at ashford meadow was being set up to make the mediocre or terrible jouster prince look good.
Now, it's not clear if he is as bad as his counterpart from book 1, but he's obviously not amazing, given how much work is being done to set his victories up. but the big difference i'd say is how he fails to actually realize that fact. he isnt savy enough to realize that his victories are fake, that this entire tourney is fake. which is very much foreshadowing about how this book will go.
which is very much the big problem with Daemon. namely that he is way too eager to give into other's praise, or more speciffically, what they tell him. if he wasnt, he never would have come across the water.
on the other side of the book there is of course Dunk and Ball.
Dunk is the guy who stumbled into the plot completely by accident, and because the actual MC of this story took a liking to him, the plot kinda forced him to participate. which i find absolutely hilarious. he's the equivelant of the detective... but rather than being hired, he kinda just stumbled unto the crime scene all ready being investigated, and has to figure out what the hell is going on.
and being a mediocre jouster, he does the equivelant of derailing the plot by getting drunk and then wrecking his car that is essential to the plot. i love it. and i love that dunk's stupid decision to joust ended up screwing him over by depriving him of mail and sword at a point where he desperately needed them.
then of course there is the mystery, of who is trying to kill him. with the first and obvious suspicion being on gormon peake, or one of the other rebels, and the second being a vague idea that maybe the brightflame is behind it all from across the narrow sea.... Then martin pulls the rugg out from under us by revealing that the culprint was indeed one of the rebels... but his motive was pretty much just that his old flame had moved on after seeing what kind of arse he grew up to be.
which leads to one of the more realistic brawls in this series, where dunk wins, but as usual, he gets wrecked in the process.
i love martin turning this series into a detective story, then completely doing a 180 after having set up all the pieces necessary for the climax.
also, i really love ball, and i really hope we'll get a trinity of dunk, egg, and ball when we go north for the next book(to be honest, im more interested in more dunk and egg other than dream of spring post WOW). Dunk the leader and big guy, Egg the small guy with noble connections, and Ball as the supremely talented jouster that is everything about puissant combat that dunk is in hand to hand.
Ball is pretty much just the Jon Snow of this book. the bastard of above average skill, that is suddenly faced with the realization that even if he beats the shit out of every man that challenges him, they wont respect him for it. i also love his and Dunk's bonding moment, where the veteran hedgeknight forgives him for being an ass, and the one where he pretty much notes how he really wished he'd been able to do to his detractors what Ball did when he refused the offer of ransom.
and martin being martin, there is of course that element of him refusing to make Ball a true white man. because just Like Dunk, he isnt exactly dubbed in the true and honest way. buying ones knighthood isnt exactly honorable... buying it for your sisters virginity is even less. i like that martin gave this guy a pretty rotten backstory like that, and frankly, i hope we get more development on that front, with him having some regrets, or maybe trying to make it up to his sister in the future. the way we probably will with Dunk and egg when he innevitably admits to Egg that he was never knighted(unless he gets knighted when he goes undercover amongst the Golden Company, and never has to tell him. MAN i want future Dunk and Egg stories.)

Daemon II is essentialy Renly Baratheon. He is charming and good looking and gregarious, so he atracts ambitious followers and lickspitles easily. But he has no will or ambition or self control to achieve anything of note or control his own followers.

He's too familiar with Dunk to be a simple spy and knows too much court intrigue for a servant of Bloodraven. Moreover the way Duncan was naturally cautious of him from the start and the Glamor effect when Duncan looks at him is almost magical and fits the rumors that Bloodraven is a clever sorcerer who just happens to do some of the spying himself. Even more evidence is the fact that he's going to be the Three Eyed Raven which connects him to magic more strongly and makes the whole fake identity more plausible.
