When you mentioned to use old wire for mending barbed wire it immediately reminded me of Matt 9:14-17. "Don't put new wine in old skins".
Also, thanks for the tip because we are going to have to cut a fence soon and splice it back later. This will help a lot.

I sure wish you'd been around in my younger farming days... I could have saved myself a lot of work knowing what I've learned from your videos. Never had a fence stretcher till recently. Don't work the farm anymore but just had to have a stretcher... I couldn't help myself.. "fencing pliars"... Still have one! They're not just for fencing anymore! A great multi tool! Thanks

Also got one of those heavy duty plastic nylon boxes to keep all my fencing gear in now I just throw the whole box in the pickup and go everything in there except post and barbed wire. Luke, you and these videos are every day proof that you can learn something every day. I been fixing fence all my life and today was the first time I ve seen a y method splice. Its obviously superior to what I been doing but never thought of doing it. I recently learned about a tool called the texas fencing tool. It is great for taking a little slack out without restreching the whole line. If you get a chance CZcams it. I think they might be over priced for what they are ,but they're slick.

When I was growing up on our family farm we just used a the claw end of a hammer to tighten up the fencing. Dad had me and my brothers all out there doing it. Just slide the claw onto the wire, parallel to the wire, bend the hammer up or down 90-degrees and repeat several times between the two posts and it's back to tight. Each bend takes a good inch of slack out.

Luke that is great video. I learned the y method years ago when and older Native American taught it to me when we were working on fence on a cow lease I had neat Riudoso, NM. I have never used anothe method to mend fence dice that day. Also on the wire gate tool....I learned that one years ago myself when I was working down on South Texas as a Border Patrol Agent. Those tools were on all the wire gates down there and dam they were useful!!! I fabricate my own and use them on my ranch in NM. This is great info keep up the great videos.

Awesome video, I guess with fencing not much changes except for a few things here and there. I've worked at our family ranch all my life after my full time job and nothing relaxes me more than working on fences and being able to fix the fence. Wearing gloves is a must especially if you're dealing new barbed wire, the barbs are razor sharp. In South Texas we call those temporary gates falsetes, I guess because it's just a false gate that works but the latches that we use are barbed less wire that is just looped around the top of the two poles. That method of latch I had never seen before, I will sure make a few to try them out. Thanks for the very informative video. Great job fellow rancher I like how you communicate with your cow Rose. Nicely done Sir! Id say helping my buddy on his farm back east in Western Maryland we mostly did the loop twist method or the number two method you showed here. It seemed to work okay over the years except his fence was in a bad way. I finally convinced him to completely take out and redo the fence out along the road. We tore out and replaced new probably close to 3/4 of mile of barbed wire three strand fence. Took us most of the summer since the ground was so rocky and hard to put in posts. That seemed to help for a few years in the broken fence that needed to be mended. The old fence really only worked at all because a cow would just get hung up in all the mended peices all tangled together so they just stayed away from it.

Thanks Luke. Ive got to splice the top wire on the fence in front of my house. We shot it in half shooting at a hog. Got the wire, missed the hog. He was saved by a wire. we have 35 MPH wind with a wind chill of 17 right now. Pretty rare for central Texas. God bless

It makes sense to use old wire to mend an older wire fence because it’s already been stretched. I’ve only used the loop method the few times I had to fix broken wire, but the next time I do I’ll try the 2 twist methods that you did in the video. Take care.

@@BacktotheBasics101 Luke, I believe seeing the wisdom in others is a mandatory step to having wisdom, ourselves. Plus my dad used to say, "Experience is a great teacher, specially someone else's, because you will never live long enough to make all the silly mistakes yourself." Great video and I enjoyed it all. Have a blessed day.
