  • By providing economic incentives within a market-based system, many believe that carbon trading is the most effective way to fight climate change, but others argue that it will only delay society's transition away from fossil fuels. CNBC's Tom Chitty explains.

    I appreciate that he briefly discussed criticisms of carbon trading, but the root of our environmental crisis goes much farther than economic systems can address. I can't speak to the figures, and I'd love to believe these incentives curb emissions -- but it only enables (and indeed, caters to) the same corporate greed underlying ecological destruction. I think, though, that it may be more effective to suggest a change in the way we think about the environment: away from capitalist/market interests towards genuine compassion, equity, and preservation ideals. Positioning carbon caps as a solution is almost a distraction from what's really important, suggesting (to some) that carbon capping is a fully sufficient response to emissions, and that no further action, systemic change, or ideological change is necessary.

Trading permits doesn't necessarily reduce the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere because one company emits less and another company emits excess by just paying at a cost. The 500ppm for example company A doesn't emit company B emits it in excess which doesn't reduce emissions in the environment. Ty

      I believe what you are referring to is a carbon offset system which is totally different from what is described here i.e. a cap and trade system.
      So when Bill Gates flies from USA to Europe he offsets his carbon footprint by buying carbon offsets which is most likely purchased from reforestation of a degraded land system. This system has its own regulations and auditors - so when you plant your trees they need to be assessed by a registered independent authority who establishes a base line for the project.

    It doesn't even sound great in theory. If one company sells their excess quota. Another one may buy it thus the amount of emissions are the same only source is changing. Also it may be much more expensive to reduce carbon emissions that just buying others quotas.

    • @lucaskp16
      @lucaskp16 Před 3 lety +5

      the idea is to reduce that total quota available over time. so yeah at the start it doesn't do much but as the quota is reduced further the carbon price will become higher and higher until the alternative greener way becomes more cost effective

      The cap and trade helps reduce carbon emissions through quantity, therefore, the rate of change probably control by each individual country, or international groups of country. In theory, the ceiling function would be like f(x)= a(x*whatever) & a < 0. So, I think it's a incredible way for the scientist and environmentalist to set the input. Practically, the rich always find their way to cheat, either through carbon tax, cap and trade.

    • @philtaphouse5316
      @philtaphouse5316 Před 2 lety

      No. Not exactly. There has been a net movement of funds from polluter to a company investing in either greener sources of energy or they implement efficiencies so they don't need their full quota. There is also a new incentive for the polluter to reduce emissions as it is now costing them more to pollute.

    Who sets the emissions caps on the polluters? It needs to be done without political or business interference and I am really skeptical about that. For example, giving a carbon allowance to countries with actual low per capita emission is a way for other countries to buy fictitious allowances. The low emission country would argue they have "the right" to have their caps in line with industrialised countries. None of which helps the planet in the long run.

    if we can capture co2..
    modify it into methane, oxygen and water..
    come on billionaires.. we need that in every city..
    we should reduce oil as well..
    hydrogen and methane seems promising..
    we can use cassava roots to reduce plastic bags..

      Methane is a greenhouse gas, at least 30 times more dangerous as CO2.

    Well we know that we cannot shut down industries so carbon credits can play an important role in this:
    1. It will allow poor countries to earn by setting up a setup of reducing carbon like by growing trees etc that will reduce that amount of carbon which a specific industry may produce so that industry will pay that country/person for this.
    2. Gradually rates of carbon credits will increase as industries are making damage and environment is detiorating so they will try to shift to green solutions.

    It starts with common sense. Turn the light off when you leave a room. Recycle metals. Use reusable bottles. Food shop at farmers markets. Compost your food waste. Use logistical common sense when you run errands to put less miles on your car.

      mean while the military is testing their bombs, operating daily with what thousands of people could not create in their life times. The government, corporations and military will continue to pollute while families pay for carbon credits. Pollution will not stop because people recycle and reuse bottle or drive less. People are not the problem it is the governments and corporations.
