Rocket Richard was a boyhood idol of mine back in the day. In junior high school I read a book about him titled: "Fire On Ice", and I've been a fan ever since. Back in the 1960s my brother, cousin and I played a lot of 'rod hockey', or 'tabletop hockey', and I always had the Canadians and Rocket Richard playing wing.
Rocket was amazing. Despite all those goals, he only won the Hart Trophy as MVP once, in 1946-1947. During the late 50s, despite the fact that he was slowing down a bit, it must have been nice to have his old linemate Toe Blake as coach, and to have his younger brother Henri, the Pocket Rocket, join him on the team. To cap off a career with five straight Stanley Cups is quite a way to go out.
There was one occasion at least where he came one point short of the scoring lead. The events leading up to the riot cost him his best chance in 1954-55. It seemed like anyone who didn't like him or the Canadiens at the time were more than determined to get him. They pretty much did in that situation.

The late Red Storey who refereed in Richard's era, admitted that it was "open season" on Richard, meaning that the refs couldn't call everything or each game would have seen little even strength action. The opposition knew this and thus repeatedly hooked and held Richard, knowing that less than half their infractions would be called penalties.

In Detroit it is known for a fact that howe was not even on the ice when a goal was scored , yet howe was awarded assists . in Monreal the score sheets were judiciously eamined by other teans to not let the Howe thing go is rockets favour . In the manner that the NHL protected Gretzky , the NHL made it as hard as possible on Rocket . He was unmercifully attacked and slandered by opposition to the point that he would lose his cool , and he did .
