- Following the state funeral for NHL legend Maurice Richard on May 31, 2000 in Montreal, his contemporary and on-ice rival, the great Gordie Howe shared his thoughts and memories of "The Rocket" with the CBC's Terence McKenna.
I met the Rocket at an old timers game in 1991. I asked him for a picture. He asked me to stand beside him to get in the picture. He was so polite and humble. Very soft spoken almost shy. The pleasure of meeting him was all mine.
What a shame these great players are now gone
Always a gentleman. Gordie is beloved by Red Wings fans just as much as the Rocket is by Canadians fans. Both remain as part of the heritage of the NHL.
**we learned form the rocket , the other kids learned from us , now they learn from wayne and bobby hull** this is pure wisdom and humility.
Sir Isaac Newton, the famous English scientist, once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Two of the greatest, Howe and the Rocket. Too bad the young people don't educate themselves on how great these players were. Howe is the GOAT of hockey! The Rocket was not too far behind!
Wtf is wrong with you people. Always eager to "rank" everything as if you were qualified to do so 🙄
@@MonTube2006 What do you mean , "YOU PEOPLE"?
@@sethother8012 pretty self explanatory
Howe is the greatest American, but that's as high as he goes... in terms of success and importance, there are at least 3 if not more Habs that dethrone him.
But let's not disrespect the dead. Theyre all great and all gentlemen.
@@sethother8012 "What do you mean, "YOU PEOPLE"?" Ask Don, Cherry.🤣
Nice Canadian, Gordie was 💚 Canada 🇨🇦 so fortunate to have Mr. Howe
Pure class!
Gordie is the best!!! So underrated!!!
Lol underrated lol in what way is mr hockey underrated
Gordie Howe is probably rated. Maurice Richard is the underrated one..
Banana brain lol. You must live under a rock!
Great rivilary
Giants of the game!
Gordie was humble
The Rocket, Golden Jet & Mr Hockey were the GOAT
They were great but Bobby Orr was the GOAT
@@c.san.8751 yes ty
“We knew that when that smoke bomb went off” lol
Gordie talks about todays players weight training lol if you saw the dressing room picture of gordie with no shirt on omg imagine him with some weight training
What about it? Bigger biceps and a higher bench press would not have made Howe a better player. Would Gretzky or McDavid be better with more muscle?
@@mpm1958 I only meant how much more muscular he would have looked . Wow can you try and read anything more into an innocent comment. Just go away I’m so tired of these ridiculous attacks.
@@samspade4050 No offense intended and I never attack people... only ideas and opinions. There's a photo of Gordie Howe in a fishing boat where his physique looks fantastic. But in other pictures, he seems to have very little shoulder and chest development ... never seemed to hamper him for hockey though. Again, no attack, just discussing. Apologies for any misunderstanding.
The two greatest of all time. And they did not wear a helmet or plastic visor. Plus they knew how to shave.
Two of the greats but not the two greatest of all time.
@@c.san.8751 I don ‘t have any idea who would be better. Gordie and The Rocket played before expansion and this watered down version version we have been stuck with the last 55 years.
@@donaldbrinks5115 Good point. I am not sure myself. I would say that Howe and Richard are significantly tougher and played when a lot of stuff was not called. Today, players are far more talented in terms of skill level. I would say Orr is the in-between guy. The one who could have played in any era. He could skate, handle the puck and shoot and was tough. I am not sure Richard or Howe would have had the same success. I agree though today's game is watered down that is for sure.
3:00 "oh damn and it is so late."
I'm SURE I'll be destroyed for this, and I'm an OLD guy who's from Buffalo originally and who's watched the NHL and loved it since the early seventies, but was Howe, as great and revered as he is and was, really that much of an asshole when it came to intimidation and cheap shots? If so, I'm not such a huge fan anymore. I've known my share of people like that in life and regardless of stature attained, I have zero respect. Come on with the hate now, but that's how I feel. He just seemed like a very talented, narcissistic asshole who could cheap shot players with his cheap stick play, intimidate with his threats, and kick everyone's ass if the two former didn't work. My take.
Many athletes are like that. In the game, there are trash talkers from every era. It is a giant psychop. If you played, you would know that you try to get whatever edge you can. Especially when the Rocket and Howe played, there was a lot of dirty stuff going on. Youcan watch archived games and see how much the players got away with. Today, they call everything. That is why individual stats, in every pro sports league, are higher.
Well, the called it a Gordie Howe hat trick ... a goal, an assist, and a fight.
Other players in the day would say that Gordie had the "sharpest" elbows in the game ... and knew how to use them -- especially when going into the corners.
The Rocket scored most of his goals against weak teams and weak goalies while competing against just five teams. Not a great accomplishment.
So why didn't everyone else from Richard's era get 500 goals? Richard was the leading goal-scorer of the 1940s by a wide margin. So if that wasn't a great accomplishment, I guess nobody accomplished anything. Richard had the second most goals in the 1950s next to Gordie Howe. Again, not an accomplishment, so what about the players behind his totals like Geoffrion, Beliveau, Lindsay, Bathgate, Delveccio, Moore or Kelly?
@@mpm1958 Richard played alongside of 15 HOFers while competing against just 5 other teams throughout his entire career and the Rangers and Bruins were horrible teams. Simply put Richard was a great player that dominated in a total joke of a league. He would’ve got no help if he were playing as a Ranger, Bruin or Hawk.
@@toddmurphy3245 I guess that begs the question of who you believe was the true star of the 1940s
@@mpm1958 I’m not bashing any of the players. I’m just saying they had it pretty easy back then. It’s very clear to me why the Habs won five straight cups. Four out of six teams make the playoffs and all they had to do was win eight games for a cup. I respect the players but competition in the NHL was very weak up till 1980.
Have you heard of «dilution of talents»? What do you think of the today NHL players on the third and fourth line? Montreal battle since 20 years to get a strong first line... Put that way, it means that the players beteween 1940 and 1960 were the 150 best in both Canada and USA. Unlike today, every Canadian and Quebecois kid was playing hockey, so Richard was the best of the best among milions of players, like Peuskas and Pele around 1960. It took 30 years for Mike Bossy and Gretzky to score 50 in 50 while the NHL has expanded with huge dilution of talents... One could also says the Gretzky achievements are not that great because tean in western conference really sucked at the time... And the goalies, and so and so... Richard was the best at his time, and made his team great with many Stanly Cup, that's why he became greater than life, an idol and a legend, while players like Beliveau, Moore, Plante ans Geoffrion remained great but not iconic legend.
Grreat interview ... very classy as usual Gordie .
WHAT CLASS . When they made Gordie , they broke the mold .
The Rocket said some unkind personal things about Gordie , and Gordie never let that influence any comments he made about THE ROCKET . Rocket was never as gracious to Gordie , as Gordie was to Rocket ...and I say that as a boy and a Canadien Rocket fan .
Howe showed class in his words here even if I think that the Mr Hockey thing goes a bit too far. But I think their situation and status were quite different. Gordie came with his elbows in the face of everybody, bullying young players or all players as it is and nobody really answered him. He had a good hockey IQ obviously, was talented. But in his case, the challenge from other players, when it happened, stayed a hockey challenge. The Rocket had all the same hockey challenges plus the racism on the ice. Players wanted to hack him for being french. Howe didn't get to face that situation and it became a big part of what was happening on the ice. The physical assault that the Rocket had to cope with was 10 times more than what Howe had to face. Anyway, for me they were the perfect opponents in terms of hockey. Two great ones, face to face, trying to get the win, showing talent, intensity, strength.
