In this free Silent Lucidity guitar lesson series you will learn Queensryche's extremely popular power ballad in it's entirety.
Written by the band's then lead guitarist Chris Degarmo, Silent Lucidity has plenty of cool guitar challenges to sync your teeth into.
To start, we will cover the acoustic fingerstyle intro. Besides the fingerstyle technique required to play it, you will also have to deal with a few large shifts as well.
From there we switch to the electric guitar parts focusing on the gorgeous arpeggiated picking sequences.
Then to wrap up this free Silent Lucidity guitar lesson video series we will take a look at the epic guitar solo. This solo incorporates some large one and a half step pre-bends that can be quite tricky to nail correctly. Practicing this solo over and over is a great exercise in keeping your bends in tune.
When you get this song together and play it through in it's entirety you really get a close up look at how beautiful the guitar parts in Silent Lucidity are. When it comes to power ballads, I think Silent Lucidity is definitely one of the most well put together ballads in history.
So have fun with this Silent Lucidity guitar lesson series! Carl..

This is the song that got me hooked onto your videos Carl! Beautiful song and great job instructing! Thank you for all you have done for us trying to learn to play better!
Even without the vocals it is still a powerful and magically sad, beautiful, and hopeful composition
Just learned how to play it for my mom, she loves this song :) thank you so much ❤
Really enjoyed your tutorial here. I've been playing this wrong since I first learned it maybe 10 years ago. I wasn't too far off but the way I was playing it I didn't have both of those G notes together like that. Made a HUGE difference and now I can finally make the intro sound like the original. This is one of my favorite songs and as long as it's been since it was recorded it just never gets old.
I never held a guitar before, and besides that, even i succeeded playing thanks to the tutorial. Of course i played poorly and slowly , but was good for the first time.
It all begins slowly. Good job though. :)
@Allan Francis Yup, have been watching on flixzone} for years myself :D
@Allan Francis Definitely, I have been using Flixzone} for years myself =)
@Allan Francis Yup, have been using flixzone} for since november myself :)
30 yrs of picking you jus taught me a better way i play by sound thank you i will be learning alot from your videos thank you muchly!!!!!!😉
I absolutely love your lessons ! This is one of my favourite Queensryche's songs. Karl thanks a lot !!!!
Great lesson
Thank you, that's the music that I like, I tried to figure everywhere but found even being Brazilian, I learned perfectly with you, you are a great instructor, once again, thank you.
I also find its easier instead of playing the C shape (out of the Queensryche Empire book I have) at 9:40 is to just use A string 2nd fret and G string 5th fret. Its sets it up better for the upcoming D string 5th fret, B string 3rd fret. Its just a much easier shape, but both are the same but your picking pattern is not having switch hitting the open E and only having to lift the 5th fret on the G string back to the G string on the 3rd fret. Give it a try, it works well.
i saw you mess up few times and thats proof that even great guitarists make mistakes , so I as a beginner guitarist that makes me fell a lot better about ' not getting it ' . practice times 3 , and don't take failures too seriously. AWESOME tutorial THANKS !!
I just got my first guitar and knew I wanted to learn this but gosh what a great teacher. I’m on my 3rd day watching your videos I’m almost able to play fully. Thank you for sharing.
Youve done mankind a great service here. Kudos
I've been able to play it for years and its still one of my favorites, cool choice carl :)
best guitar teacher right now on youtube.....
Nope Marty music is
@@samk6251 nah I really prefer carl , but everybody got different opinions
@@josh8078 true👍
My favorite thing about the internet is that, no matter what you say, there's always one guy that has to publicly disagree with something that is indisputably subjective. Lol. It's kind of embarrassing how dumb we have become and it's one of the worst things that the internet has done to us. It's really bad when you can't even avoid it on a damn guitar tutorial lol. At least the guy did agree that we all have different opinions, which proves that people just disagree just to put their opinions out there. That style is unbelievably rampant and that's a result of the most devastating addiction in the history of mankind, which is social media.
It's Videos like this that made me go put a guitar on lay-away at Guitar Center . Making it look EASY !!! Thank you so much for "picking" a great song !!
Best thing about beginner guitar player is a left handed guitar player looking at a right handed guitar player is like looking in the mirror and you learn faster keep on representing 👍
Very easy chords, but..... also very tricky rhythmic patterns with irregular shifts from 4/4 to 7/8 and vice-versa!!! This one is much tougher than it sounds!!!
Thank you for this. So many beautiful memories attached to this song. We're learning!!
thanks for bringing up those different picking patterns on the intro.. its a huge difference.
Love all of your tutorials. Thank you so much, please keep on going!!!
The best lesson for this song I have found in youtube
I've been playing the intro all wrong
Carl, you're the best online guitar/music teacher I know, I've been watching your tutorials since I was 14 years old and now I'm way better at guitar, and btw, do you think you can do a tutorial on Gates of Babylon by Rainbow..? I'd really appreciate it...
I look up lessons on some pretty obscure songs, and this guy has done them. Love it.
Been playing guitar for like a week so this is tough but trying to find songs i love on here instead of easy songs in beginner classes.
Can you do eyes of a stranger?
Really enjoyable. Love your pace and teaching methods!
Fantastic. Exactly how it’s played 🎶
Wow. Beautiful
I learn from your lessons faster than with any other tutorials out there.
Awesome dude, thank you
Can someone help me understand why play g note on 5th fret of d string when there's an open g string beneath it, I'm just starting but am older and not much dexterity
Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Thanks this is awesome
Thank you very much!!! I've been learning a lot from you!!! Keep the awesome job!!!
Can someone explain why in the very beginning he says the first string hit is a D note and then he says thats a G note. I looked up what strings are what noptes and it says it is D so why is it all of a sudden a G. Guitar is confusing.
Reason why I wanna learn this song is because my father always tried to teach me how to play guitar but I’ve never listen because I’ve been on the internet and almost lost my dad. Before he tried teaching me this song and I didn’t want to so I left to go back on the internet. But the fear of losing him hurts and I’d try to learn this without my dad and surprise him with it because he'd always wanted to teach me this song but I never wanted to play guitar but I’m thinking of trying to learn this song:)
I’m a twelve year old and I’ve never learnt how to play any instrument but I wanna learn to play a guitar

Clearly, when Chris DeGarmo wrote this it seems he was thinking more in terms of picking notes, not patterns. Hence the "picking pattern" keeps "changing".
*thanks Carl !*😀
You're good!
I have a deformity of my left hand; I twist tie a pick to my left hand little finger, how can I play this music

Can you do Suite Sister Marry by Queensrych???
I have my guitar tuned (standard) and it's not sounding right ... so, is there a key to tuning up for this song? Thanks!
+cregenhold Yes there is, and its the same issue I am having to determine which key it is.
Yall ever figure it out? Same problem
Are you using an electronic tuner? Is it set to 440? This tune is in the key of G.
I can do this!🤔⁉️gonna try anyway 😀😁😄👌👍✌️😎
thanks :D!
cara gostei dmais
Thumbs Up!!
I also teach guitar
Was Chris Degarmo a genius? ;)
Standard tuning?
If it's in standard tuning he doesn't have to say so because it's STANDARD
Thank you for asking that. It should always be said first thing I think also.
chris klein?
🛸🛸👌👌❤❤
Second patter is c and a minor. your welcome
My wife fell in love with me when I played her this intro, but I was sooo incorrect. My marriage is based on a sham!
😂
my sausage fingers cant hit the open B, think ill need a wider necked guitar

Do you have to have long fingernails to pick like that?
Most don't need them really long, like just a little longer then your fingertip, just enough to catch the string. And getting used to where all your nails are is the next step.
turtles
This is great, thanks!
