Modern Warfare 3 is the worst-rated Call of Duty in the franchise’s history, and if you take any look at the discourse surrounding it, you’ll see why. All the maps are reused, the campaign is short, poorly designed, and boring, zombies is just Warzone with an undead coat of paint, and you’d be hard-pressed to find any discussion, no, sentence discussing MW3 that doesn’t include the phrase, $70 DLC. But there's more to this equation because Treyarch has touted Modern Warfare 3 as having a higher engagement than both Modern Warfare 1 and 2 combined. Further, their take on zombies has been the most successful third mode in Modern Warfare history. Finally, while the campaign is awful, it only makes up so much of the playerbase. Trophy data from many of the recent Call of Duty games showcase that more players on average are reaching the max level in multiplayer than players finishing the campaign. There is a clear disconnect between the people talking about the game online and the wider player base, and I want to figure out why, in spite of it all, Modern Warfare 3 sold.
I need to make something clear before moving forward and that is if we are talking ethics, Modern Warfare 3 is an abhorrent example of Activision prioritising a yearly release over not just the quality of the product, but the quality of life for those working on this game. Developers have gone on record about how hard they were crunched, and truthfully, I think Sledgehammer should win an award for putting this together in the time that they did; it’s impressive, but the fact they had to is utter horseshit. I also want to make it clear that I won’t be arguing for or against the price tag. As much as I could try, the point of this video isn’t to review the game, it’s to explain why, in spite of such poor reviews, it is doing so well. In order to break this down I’ll need to cover a few topics; 1, enragement and engagement. 2, content vs mechanics. 3, reviews. And 4, my own little biassed take on why people still bought MW3..
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is one of the worst rated games in the series, but why did Modern Warfare 3 sell. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 not to be confused with the old Call of Duty MW3 is an MW3 remake. This is not an Modern Warfare 3 review, nor does it aim to see if Modern Warfare 3 So bad or good. I could make an MW3 Review, but I think this video gets my thoughts out well enough. This video will encompass Warzone 3, but won't be a Warzone 3 review, and the same goes for the Modern Warfare 3 Zombies mode. So, is this the worst Call of Duty? How will this impact the Warzone 3 Meta. As of now, CoD MW3 is great, despite the COD MW3 reviews I have seen. I concede that the Modern Warfare 3 campaign, isn't the best, and if I was to do a series of Call of Duty analysis, or a Call of Duty review, or Call of Duty retrospective, I would rank this in the mid range, definitely above Modern Warfare 2. I too got scammed into buying mw2 and after multiple times I've deleted it and redownloaded it, I got my $70 worth and after the shit show haunting even in oct/nov and as soon as mw3 dropped, I officially uninstalled it for good since it will always be tied to mw3 with constant updates 😂😂😂

I'm gonna be honest, I have not even picked up a Call Of Duty since Cold War and when I canceled my pre-order of Vanguard due to its horrible beta. Since then, I've been glad I've just listened on the sidelines and never bought them, since I knew that I'd just be walking straight into disappointment. I'm honestly happy in knowing I haven't missed out on much with this franchise.

@@xKonscious I stopped getting them after MW3, then got brought back in by MW2019 after playing the Alpha and Beta, and haven't gotten one since. As much of a breath of fresh air MW2019 was, they went back to being bad after that.
Vantard was the last one I bought and I absolutely hated it.
Honestly, my favorite COD games are MW2019 and Cold War. MW is more tactical (at least how my extended custom game group plays) and Cold War is for when I just want to run fast and shoot stuff or play Zombies. Genuinely think Cold War's Outbreak mode is phenomenal and so good that I even prefer playing it solo (bc none of my friends have the game and more loot for me).
Another reason why it's selling so well is probably because it's being sold as a bundle with a ps5 in my country atleast.What's funny is that the bundle is always discounted and generally costs around 580 usd whereas the normal edition of the console(without any extra game etc) costs around 600 usd.The call of duty mw3 bundle is essentially the cheapest way to buy a ps5.
I already own sm2 and I still picked the sm2 bundle over mw3 and there’s still a decent amount of them sitting there while the sm bundle is just gone

To be fair, that's unlikely to be a huge boost or reason for the game's sales. Like MW3 had great pre-orders and sales even before the game released.
There was a sledgehammer dev that came to my university, she even said that at LEAST half of everyone there got fired. There were 2 riggers for the models, now there’s one (the dev visiting) and they were crunched so hard that her BOSS had to help her, so they could make the deadline
A friend keeps telling me that the multiplayer is a lot of fun to him. I was in chat when he and a few of the guys played and sure, they were having fun.
The campaign simply doesnt matter to them. As for me, i only care about that part of the game. My trash, their treasure
This is really it man. I started playing COD in 2019 and the multiplayer is dumb fun every year. None of the campaigns have been downright bad, but some of them are so mid I get it if you don't want to keep playing.
After reaching lvl 290 i can say MW3's multiplayer is really Mid. 5/10. They didnt do anything interesting this time, its just your average call of duty... And average is already good for the fanbase. After all we dont want another Ghosts or Exosuit fiasco, right?

I bought it a few months after release bc my friends wouldn’t quit nagging me to and pure boredom. My first 3 matches were on maps that were in MW2 which I already owned and played. Same graphics, same gameplay, same menus. It’s honestly shocking. Genuinely felt robbed. Was nothing but a 30 dollar DLC. And the fact they can do this with no repercussions is crazy.

The best way I explained either to myself or the friends that play mw3 as to why this game isnt outlandish as people make it seem is because its something that can create moments. the same way people still play siege or overwatch or whatever regardless of it making them question life, its a game you can just sit an play then unknowingly get pulled into a grind cause of their challenge pregression. to an extra personal note, just feels better then whatever they were going for with mw2

Preface: I owned MWII previously and MWIII is an upgrade to MWII I bought MWIII after testing it out with the 5-day Free Trial. It was super fun DURING the free trial. Once that free trial was over, I was lead to purchase MWIII especially since it had a promo on the digital copy for roughly $47. After I paid then played, it was super laggy, SBMM was turned all the way up and it became drastically less fun the more and more I played. I was able to get a refund from Microsoft and I was thankful. I am playing BO3 (got it on promo for $20), BO Cold War (got it on promo for $20) and MW19 (got it for a steal at $5 from Gamestop). These three will hold me over until Treyarch's new BO Gulf War. Believe everyone that says Treyarch is the best then comes Sledgehammer then Infinity Ward. I believe Infinity Ward may have an internal friction with Activision which is why they keep making throwaway COD games. Or they are making terrible CODs in order to make a decent game to look as if they have made a comeback. Who knows only time will tell.

The reason why cod imo is so successful is that one thing that Activision can ALWAYS do to perfection is selling the IDEA of the game and not the game itself. From the hype of stunning trailers to trailers featuring celebrities and the promise of a brand new experience is what drives people to buy it. That things will be different this time. It’s a toxic relationship basically

I am a pretty frequent warzone player and I skipped MW3. Not going to buy DLC for a game that ruined so much of what the OG Warzone built.

my favorite game in the series by far was mw2019 just because of how new it felt when I was playing it for the first time like that feeling when I bought the game for $20 from a classmate made it feel so much better because I thought it was a steal so I played mw2019 so much to the point where my xbox could barely load the main menu walking map. I was really hoping to have the same feeling when I bought mw2 because I thought it'd be better mw2019. it wasn't but I still had my fun with it because I liked the camo grind and also the pve stuff that they added, I thought those were really cool and would to see more tbh. i don't plan on buy mw3 right now just because I feel like nothing in mw3 will make my jaw drop like it did with 2019. I really do play call of duty for the campaign because I feel like that's where most of their work should be at and I like to immerse myself into these I play. So having a shit campaign kind of sucks ass. I do miss the multiplayer of call of duty because its only in call of duty where people use their mics the most and not hearing people shit talk me for using a sniper makes me miss the experience that call of duty brings with its community. plus I'm a destiny player now and need to spend my money wisely lol

Feels like WW2 era SHG again. It'll go down as probably another underrated COD.

It's because of youtubers. They complain about the game yet still buy it. They are a big influence to younger generations of kids. I'm old school since cod 2 big red one and haven't bought a cod since advanced warfare. Activision will keep throwing people shit if they keeps buying it. We've been asking that question for over a decade. It's market mindshare, truth is the majority of the crowd doesn't care about reviews.
Because people talk a lot online about how they're so angry/disappointed/etc due to the perceived anonymity and group think. However, that doesn't line up with their real personal thoughts. At least, it doesn't enough to stop them from actually continuing to buy it. It's all sound and fury signifying nothing. The virtual world doesn't reflect 1:1 with the real one where people vote with their wallets.
Also, out the rage and outcry means less to the company than profits which they're making tons of. Why would they change anything? If people actually wanted change, vote with your wallet and stop paying for what you supposedly hate so much. That's when you'll actually see change.
Edit: in fact, I'm thinking I should start picking some companies to invest in based on the amount of outrage that they get online. It could be rather profitable. If people's actions reflected their purchases, it wouldn't but that's clearly not the world we live in.

A couple points here and there I disagree with. But one thing I don’t like when people bring it up is the recoil. Holding a weapon correctly should lead to next to no recoil on modern weapons. The realistic thing would be to make it less prominent

Got permanently banned on ps5. Never owned MWII or warzone, never even got into a match of MWIII after I bought it. Never played and I got banned on console. Ban appeal was denied. Gave up.
I only stooped around when MW19 came out. I was really in it for the campaign and bots only.

I haven't played COD since Advanced Warfare but I think it keeps selling because it's the group hobby of people. Similarly how people have a recreational sports team they join up with and play on a schedule there are people who do the same with multiplayer games. Mechanics, storylines, worker treatment, none of these things matter to them, they aren't even aware of such things. They have their friends group they socialize with online by playing COD with them, and every year they all buy the new COD because it's just a habit at this point.

There's gameplay realism and setting realism. Majority of people talking about wanting a more realistic CoD are talking about the setting. Less exosuits, movement, super agents, etc. and more grounded, gruesome settings that put you into the boots of an average or an above average soldier.
I bought it because I got the CoD itch and wanted to play on the OG Mw2 maps. It was fun for a bit then the matchmaking just ruins the experience.

3 of us were going to delete it the other night as it is so bad, Never been able to get a game of Invasion since its Launch on PS5, The game is not fit for purpose.
vocal minority that's the key to this, cod is bigger then ever, just for some reason people want to hate on people who want to just play an arcade shooter and other then cod we really don't have anything as good as it and now with the almost weekly updates gives people something to do, i'm happy getting off my 9-5 and play cod and turn my brain off and many many people in the trades do the same, i'm not defending cod but i think people forget this.
At the end of the day people online need to realize that no matter how many views hate videos get, no matter how many people online are seething over the series. They are a minority, the average normie is not online following every single move that a game's devs and publisher make, or pouring over the update logs. They just want a game that is fun for them to play. And I always thought that the core gameplay of COD was pretty fun, the issue is that it keeps getting buried under more and more bs.

I stopped buying cod after bo4 and decided to get mwiii because I loved the old maps being brought back. I’m so glad I gave this game a chance. If you can get over the SBMM and look at the positives, it’s an extremely fun game. Plenty of events and weekly challenges, aftermarket parts are awesome, great camo grind, smooth movement, love the feel of the weapons, beautiful graphics, and the zombies mode is a blast with so many different ways of playing it. Campaign was not good and I’m not saying this is the best cod I’ve ever played, but I’m definitely glad I gave the game a chance and am having the most fun I’ve had since bo2 or bo3

Thought this was obvious: the people actively playing know that in general MW3 feels like an improvement from last year overall. Two years of Modern Warfare support is also a first and people who skipped out last year are recognizing that the water is still fine and jumping into the pool anyway. Casuals just saw the low campaign reviews and stay away lol.
I find it funny that despite the low reviews this ended up being my favorite CoD since MW2019. That's what people hopefully will remember years frrom now, cause I know I will.
Improvement? How? Sounds like coping. Mw3 doesn’t really have a lot going on. Outside from the movement “improvements” Mw3 is a downgrade in terms of content, campaign and re-used assets from mw2. They are even adding 2022 mw2 maps in rotation to mw3 to add some variety to the lack of content of this game 🤣 let’s just accept that people who bought this call of duty are the same ones that buy it year after year no matter if it’s good or bad. People who do not really think twice. As long as it has a call of duty logo then they’ll buy it. Moreover, unlike mw3, mw2 was a complete game at launch. Mw3 is barely a dlc at this point.
