How One Man Built His Own Spacesuit

- Since the age of 8, Cameron Smith has known he was destined for space. He wrote letter after letter to NASA astronauts, and spent countless hours watching and re-watching moon landings on 8mm film. Eventually, he decided to find a way to launch his own space dreams. The archaeologist began to scheme up an unconventional DIY plan: to build his own spacesuit, ascend in a hot air balloon and test his creation at 63,000 feet-the point at which no human can survive without a pressurized environment.

This man is practically living for his dream. Some people may call him stupid, but I admire his passion.
True! But i also want to be an astronaut although i can't afford it
63,000 ft is not even close to being considered space.. its clickbait video
@@Alexanderthegreatjones The title doesn't say Man goes to space. it says "How one man built his own spacesuit" Which he did, and is still doing.
No one called him stupid

Yeah ask any 100 meter sprinter training for the Olympics. 4 years of training for a 10 second event.
SandMan Jono ...not even a gopro shot of him reaching 5000 ft 😒😒
I'm going to call BS on that day until there's some evidence
@@rerikm So what if he reached 5000 ft? All you need is a t-shirt and shorts at 5000 ft. Why would they even mention that at the end of the video? It's completely pointless and irrelevant and why do you even need evidence of that? It's not difficult to achieve in a hot air balloon.
When you get to maximum altitude, don't you want to stay longer than just 10 seconds? The suit should be able to hold up much longer than that.
He was a professor of mine a few years ago. Really an amazing guy to be around with, and is truly passionate about his work. Good to see him on this channel.
What subject do he teach

Wow - the ultimate DIY project! I hope you reach your goal Cameron. Thanks for sharing your story
Hi Jared I am your biggest fan!!!!!!!!!😀
Me too!!!!! 😆😃
This seems a little more sane than blasting up a couple hundred feet in a homemade rocket to prove the Earth is flat.
Only because hot air balloons have been a proven form of travel for centuries. They're extremely simple to use and require very little engineering....unlike manned rockets.
But in that flat-earthers defense, he at least tried to prove/disprove whatever it was he set out to do. Most just blabber on about NASA being liars and in control of some sort of lizardmen run Illuminati conspiracy. All while ignoring all the evidence that's available at your finger tips.
@@Soldier4USA2005 I hate flat earthers, but damn it when you're right, you're right. At least he went looking for evidence to strengthen the case, even if its pointless, he did more to actually try and prove it instead of regurgitating what that youtuber guy said about the earth being flat and i'm so retarded i couldn't argue with facts so i just assumed he was right and now i'll argue with scientists about how stupid i think they are for using evidence...i hate flat earthers...
Lmao I remember that guy. Broke his back or something in the process
The universe is a hologram... meaning it exists on a 2 dimensional plane, most likely on the surface of a black hole. 2 dimensions is flat, thus Earth is flat.

I can see a movie made about this guy and Tom Hanks starring as him. Aloha

That's only if the space flight results in a rescue mission. If Cameron makes it back on his own then they'll cast Tom Hanks...

NASA and Space X: Hire this man.
@Ray Anthony Brady Uhhhh. What politics??
He has the same passion as they do. This is the kind of guy you want on your engineering team. He saved money where he could and cut corners that didn't violate safety.
He's proving you don't need massive budgets to accomplish something so extremely difficult and hazardous.
No, he’ll just end up at a desk job. Total waste of his talents and passion.

This guy is doing this on a shoe string budget...along with having to work his regular job.
He's also doing this alone and, as he put it, reinventing the wheel because he doesn't have the funds to do it NASA style. With millions of dollars and teams of specialists.
You claim to be logical and respectful. I say you're an asshole trying to insult someone doing amazing things because you're jealous.
There's something incredibly inspiring, yet sad about this story. I can't put my finger on it, but it's bitter sweet. Excellent video.
i also felt the same. do you feel bitter/sad because some people judged him? or because he only made it to 5,000 feet? :'(
5000 feet

@@MarkWTK Neither, I felt sad that he's been chasing a dream since childhood, and it seems all he has. My family is great friends with this guy's brother, Mark Smith, who works in the innovation department at Nike. I clicked on this because I recognized Cameron's suit. When I was 9, Cameron went to his brother Mark's pool for oxygen testing, and it was crazy cool. I got to help him out with setting up, and he's such a cool guy. Dang! It brought tears into my eyes. Such passion and a big dream.
thanks!!!
I'm doing much the same thing, different approach.
Hard-shell articulated suit (think AX2 variant) acts to constrain inflation of an inner fabric/rubber suit.
The joints of the rigid suit don't have to be air-tight, making their design/fabrication much simpler.
The air-tight bladder needs some care around elbows and such, but the shells provide the constant-volume constraint needed to reduce operator fatigue and 'inflation posing'.
A lubrication system (lots of grease!) keeps the bladder and shells/bearings from binding or abrasion.
Really good range of motion!
Dunno if this how NASA did it, as I can't find a lot of AX2 'hard-suit' data out there...
I have also been working on a pressure suit of my own.
How has this not been seen by more people???
As soon as you're ready to take on the 63, 000 feet of altitude challenge; You should invite the flat earther rocket guy, to be there when you take off; Perhaps that way,you can accomplish two more things; Like teaching this guy the fact that there's a smarter way to gain altitude and that the earth is indeed a globe; Not to mention that you might be saving this stubborn ,yet brave man's life!!👍😃
