Why Spacesuits Are So Expensive | So Expensive

  • NASA's current fleet of spacesuits was built in 1974, and each was reported to cost between $15 million and $22 million. Today, that would be about $150 million. Having not built any new mission-ready extravehicular suits since then, NASA is running out of spacesuits. In fact, NASA is down to just four flight-ready EVA suits. Since 2009, NASA has invested more than $200 million in spacesuit development, recently unveiling the xEMU prototype for its Artemis program, which plans to take humans back to the surface of the moon by 2024, with a view to eventually go to Mars. With that goal fast approaching - and the number of existing spacesuits dwindling - NASA engineers face a new kind of space race. Meanwhile, commercial space company Final Frontier Design is developing its own EVA spacesuits and plans to build new units at much lower costs than NASA. So, why has it taken so long for new spacesuits to be built? And what makes them so expensive?

But if we mine a giant gold asteroid, there will be high demand and high supply at the best and low demand and high supply at the worst. But in both cases, the value of gold would go down due to that there is a high supply for it. But remember, gold will never be worth $0.00, even if there is an infinite supply of it.

@@auntjenifer7774 or...just a thought...or, the Costa are predicated on the fact that extensive research and development has to be done on everything from proposed functionality to untested materials. All this research has to be done in conjunction with NASA itself, along with their own team of pioneering researchers. Normally research and development costs can be made up over the life of the patent and the many products sold, but this isn't possible here, as there may only be literally one or two made or sold. Now multiply this times tens of thousands and you will probably still not even come close to grasping the fully fleshed out reasoning behind the concept that human beings doing things that have never been done before, using things that have never been made before, to encounter problems that have never been encountered for before, isn't just taxing on the human imagination, and workload, and ability, and emotionally, but also financially. When they say something is ridiculously expensive, it's honestly a very lazy response to act like this is some sort of cash grab. Countless people devoted their lives to developing things that's purpose is so subtle and obscure that no more that a few people will ever know how big their contribution really was. I guess I just find it so shocking that in America of all places, people are saying, in a Capitalist country, that if they don't know someone's value, that value must be overblown. We certainly didn't land on the moon with that horribly cynical attitude

One of those suits cost 150 million in todays money
(Mind you they have technology from 40 years ago)
Meaning if Elon Musk says hes going to send 1000 people to mars by a certain year would mean the minimum cost of all the suits for the people would be 1000×150million = 150 billion.(not including the price of the new technology he would add to the suits adding alot more money)
And if a ticket to mars cost anywhere from 250,000 to 500,000 (thats what most articles say)
It wouldn't cover a fraction of the cost of like 1 suit
And i dont think elon or any other person wanting to send people to mars have a few hundred million laying around.
(Yes you could say what if he uses cheaper materials but 1 it would still cast millions per suit and it could be dangerous send people in suits that have never been tried out in outer space and also mars is different from earth so most likely the suits will have extra things that will actually let people survive in mars (because we dont know exactly how mars surface really is like what if there is strong winds that sends a rock flying and hits someones suit and it breaks because they used cheap materials)

The PLSS (Primary Life Support System), or backpack as they called it, was by far the most critical and most expensive component. Not even close. Gloves are specific to each crewman, but really aren't that much more expensive than a leg or arm piece. The second most expensive component was the HUT (Hard Upper Torso) I believe.

A full spacesuit assembly today costs approx. $15 million (NOT the $150M -$250M quoted in the video). Approx. 90% is for the PLSS (life support backpack); the remainder for the suit itself. The main reason the suits are so expensive; all the engineering costs get amortized over very few units. Also, it is NOT true that NASA is "running out" of spacesuits - new spacesuit components (e.g. gloves, arms, lower torsos, etc.) are being manufactured every year. Among the many half truths in this video; the Russian Orlan spacesuits routinely give cosmonauts a mild case of the bends (since they try to use the Orlan as a "zero pre-breath" suit, but it's not fully engineered for this application). It would take pages of text to document all of the falsehoods and half truths in this video...

Each of these components need extremely expensive custom machines to fabricate those custom parts.
Most of those machine tools have probably gone bad and the companies closed and their designs might be lost or are bad compared to modern technologies.
Also you need operators who know how top use them who are probably dead.
You have to remember that all this was before the age of computers.
Designing and making all new machines for new space suits will give much better return on investment than Rebuilding those old machines (which no one knows to operate ) and making them
Produce half a century old space suit
