Why Spacesuits Are So Expensive | So Expensive

- NASA's current fleet of spacesuits was built in 1974, and each was reported to cost between $15 million and $22 million. Today, that would be about $150 million. Having not built any new mission-ready extravehicular suits since then, NASA is running out of spacesuits. In fact, NASA is down to just four flight-ready EVA suits. Since 2009, NASA has invested more than $200 million in spacesuit development, recently unveiling the xEMU prototype for its Artemis program, which plans to take humans back to the surface of the moon by 2024, with a view to eventually go to Mars. With that goal fast approaching - and the number of existing spacesuits dwindling - NASA engineers face a new kind of space race. Meanwhile, commercial space company Final Frontier Design is developing its own EVA spacesuits and plans to build new units at much lower costs than NASA. So, why has it taken so long for new spacesuits to be built? And what makes them so expensive?

@@auntjenifer7774 or...just a thought...or, the Costa are predicated on the fact that extensive research and development has to be done on everything from proposed functionality to untested materials. All this research has to be done in conjunction with NASA itself, along with their own team of pioneering researchers. Normally research and development costs can be made up over the life of the patent and the many products sold, but this isn't possible here, as there may only be literally one or two made or sold. Now multiply this times tens of thousands and you will probably still not even come close to grasping the fully fleshed out reasoning behind the concept that human beings doing things that have never been done before, using things that have never been made before, to encounter problems that have never been encountered for before, isn't just taxing on the human imagination, and workload, and ability, and emotionally, but also financially. When they say something is ridiculously expensive, it's honestly a very lazy response to act like this is some sort of cash grab. Countless people devoted their lives to developing things that's purpose is so subtle and obscure that no more that a few people will ever know how big their contribution really was. I guess I just find it so shocking that in America of all places, people are saying, in a Capitalist country, that if they don't know someone's value, that value must be overblown. We certainly didn't land on the moon with that horribly cynical attitude

One of those suits cost 150 million in todays money

I worked on the EVA IPT (Extravehicular Activity Integrated Processing Team) as an Industrial Engineer from 1999-2002. I have no idea why there would be any confusion on what's the most expensive component in the SSA (Space Suit Assembly). The PLSS (Primary Life Support System), or backpack as they called it, was by far the most critical and most expensive component. Not even close. Gloves are specific to each crewman, but really aren't that much more expensive than a leg or arm piece. The second most expensive component was the HUT (Hard Upper Torso) I believe.

You're telling me we've spent the last 50 odd years treating EVA suits like WH40k power armor?
0:00 This dude has balls.
A full spacesuit assembly today costs approx. $15 million (NOT the $150M -$250M quoted in the video). Approx. 90% is for the PLSS (life support backpack); the remainder for the suit itself. The main reason the suits are so expensive; all the engineering costs get amortized over very few units. Also, it is NOT true that NASA is "running out" of spacesuits - new spacesuit components (e.g. gloves, arms, lower torsos, etc.) are being manufactured every year. Among the many half truths in this video; the Russian Orlan spacesuits routinely give cosmonauts a mild case of the bends (since they try to use the Orlan as a "zero pre-breath" suit, but it's not fully engineered for this application). It would take pages of text to document all of the falsehoods and half truths in this video...
Do it.

Some: the earth is flat
NASA: Artemis
Others: Another conspiracy
NASA: 🤨
The reason that flat Earth is obviously wrong is because it requires a separate explanation for many events, whereas a round Earth model fits gravity, the seasons, the sun and Moon cycle, the predictable motion of the stars, etc. To illustrate this, no flat Earth model is able to accurately predict easily observable space phenomenon like eclipses and transits.
Mr. Grant Good point sir
@@papasscooperiaworker3649 thank you. I have a good friend whom I was surprised to learn believes in Flat Earth. reasons I gave him for believing Earth is round, that seemed convincing to me, were not enough to sway him, and he challenged me to look into it deeper, so I did. Many people scoff at the flat Earth concept without actually thinking deeply enough about it to provide a good defense of the round Earth model.
Mr. Grant I’d say to avoid that rabbit hole. It’s ultimately a big waste of time. However, if you want to challenge it, look up street epistemology. It’s a way of conversing that makes the person have to think about what they’re saying and it’s often really effective.

Putin once bought one of those space suits and then went to outer space to help tripulation fix a satelite.
As soon as he came back to earth, the company delivered him the space suit and it fit pretty well.
Space X- allow me to introduce myself
FYI You can't space walk with the Tesla suit
Bret 1959 Ok expert 👌🏼 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😁🤣😂🤣😁🤣
@Bret 1959 it was cheaper to go to the moon than it would have been to fake it back in the day 😐

6:17 you can see th happiness on her face.
who is that
That's engineer Kristine Davis, she's been working on the program for 4 years
I don’t understand why they can’t just keep building the old style ones? Has technology and material design not gotten better in 40+ years?
they dont have people who built that tech anymore, even the old rocket engines are so complicated that retards today dont know how to rebuild them
The answer is in your question. In "old style", there is "old".
Each of these components need extremely expensive custom machines to fabricate those custom parts.
Most of those machine tools have probably gone bad and the companies closed and their designs might be lost or are bad compared to modern technologies.
Also you need operators who know how top use them who are probably dead.
You have to remember that all this was before the age of computers.
Designing and making all new machines for new space suits will give much better return on investment than Rebuilding those old machines (which no one knows to operate ) and making them
Produce half a century old space suit
Firestarter They already said it. A lot of manufacturers for the old suits components don’t even exist anymore.
RE-L Mayer We can’t rebuild it because the companies that supplied parts don’t even exist anymore.
went to Ted and Nikolay's NYC studio and saw the spaceships featured in this video. It was a really cool experience, they are offering internships to people too. Great way to learn how spacesuits are created as it will be useful in the near future with Blue Origin, Space X, NASA and Virgin Galactic building the space infrastructure.
Luka's space helmet filling with water Wow. Dude almost droned in his suit while working in space. That's insanely scary.
What a time to talk about space suits when doctors don't have much needed protective kits here on Earth.
You shouldnt have clicked the video if youre that narrow minded
Cringe. That's a super narrow way of thinking
Ladis cool down with the new emerging companies like Space x,blue origin and indias ISRO are already working on cheap and more efficient spacesuits to save some bucks
You definitely gonna get yours 😂
1:13 "Telemetry, and everything else that a human needs to survive."
I just dont understand how its been 47 years since humans went to the moon and there has been virtually no progress what so ever
The “t minus” countdown is no coincidence , the missing T from NASA when it’s spelled backwards is SATAN, with a serpent around it... your intuition led you to this knowledge, the whole world is a lie
Fun fact: Jeff bezos buying a space suit is the equivalent of you buying a 15$ indie game; assuming approx income 50,000$ a year.
Can you imagine the obituary ;
Death by drowning.... In space
Why are space suits so expensive?
Me:- Bc they are spacesuits?
Lollllll
well yes but actually yes
I mean, I don’t care how expensive it is, it’s either dying a painful death or not
Elon Musk should design a new suit, I could just imagine how glorious that would be
Ya
But they aren’t really made for space walk isn’t it
Not SpaceX and thier fake crap. They aren't going anywhere
@Zeekuwan Those are only for use inside the spacecraft. They even said so in this very video.
@Zeekuwan spaceX suit is not for EVA they only a pressurized suit for launch and landing
Spacesuits are so expensive because they are out of this world.
Imagine Nasa spend all their budget on space suit
"did you get it?"
"yes"
"what does it cost?"
"everything..."
