  • In this video, we take a closer look at testing the Askar 103 at F4 in OSC. We examine how well it aligns the red, green, and blue light in the stars, and also explore the amount of vignetting you may encounter when using an APS-C sensor. Join us as we dive into the details of this exciting equipment and its performance in astrophotography.

    Great video, thanks for sharing

Yes that’s backfocus from the .6 reducer. The .8 and native were ok on it. There’s an Askar back focus adjuster available or just add a shim a .5mm to start. Nevertheless I’m actually looking at getting this scope. It isn’t bad for a triplet budget refractor. The wide variable fl are optimum for large targets. Anything else can be post processed out.

I have the same scope and i have yet to try it with the 0.6 reducer. Seems promising and with the 533 should be just fine. I agree 💯% that for this price point is a solid performing scope! 😊

It's amazing what you can get these days right?

Well yes and no, Askar/Sharpstar is doing a pretty good job. I own a FMA230 too and it performs very well too.

I'm really torn between choosing this Askar 103 APO and the 80 PHQ / ZWO FF80 ... given the wide versatility of the 103 APO...

Was this with a DSLR or the 071?

That elongation is your back focus, the sensor is too close. Try adding a 0.5mm or even 1mm spacer

Interesting I had not considered that as I was precisely at askar's specs but I hear what you're saying as it could be down to filter thickness. I'll give it a try next time. I'm out thanks

Absolutely. Askar/Sharpstar are known to be off slightly in their reducer back focus requirements, just watch Lucimatico for his experience. With careful observation and testing this .6 reducer image could be improved significantly. I had to add 3mm to one reducer to get perfect stars.
I’m thinking of purchasing one of these in the near future and your video series is great, particularly as the High Point Scientific video on this scope scared the bejeebers out of me!
      Clear skies,
      Simon

@@astronotna If you Google 'OPT back focus chart' it will give you an idea to increase or decrease your back focus according to the direction of the stars in your image

@SimonT65 Ive totally seen it before Its like the Astrophotographers staple articles lol. Ill give it go! Just trying to test these things at the recommended specs really good information from both of you!

@@simonthorp8565 Thats awesome thanks for the add here. It's my first experience with Sharpstar this reducer is great already nice to know there is some room for improvement still on this reducer. If its video worthy I will report back here on the channel .Thanks for the add here. Clear skies
