  • Today we install and review some MASSIVE 250mm floating brake rotors on the Surron - these are made by Rippin Moto and are currently the world's largest surron and talaria rotors on the market! Are they worth it to upgrade your surron or Talaria?
    Video breakdown:
    - Installing big brake upgrade on the surron
    - Explanation: why bigger brakes are best for surrons and e-bikes (220mm vs 250mm)
    - Testing upgraded brakes - test ride, trail riding, brake fade test,
    - Final review: is this the best surron upgrade for your brakes?
    Thanks to Rippin Moto for supplying these rotors for review! They provided these links if you're looking to upgrade your Surron brakes:

    I put the front 250 Rippin Moto floating rotors on my 2023 Sting R MX4. Rode about 100 trail miles so far and I like them! The difference in braking performance is subtle, but noticeable. They do have much less fade on long downhills though. If you're looking for that final boss upgrade, this is it. I pair them with Shimano H03A (resin) pads for the best performance.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 10 měsíci +1

      awesome setup! those are great pads - for me the reduction in fade was substantial too. I’m running mine with TRP DHR evos now because they’re made for the wider rotors - unbelievable package

    • @MoxyDave
      @MoxyDave Před 10 měsíci

      @@logan-taylor When you say "wider rotors", are you talking about the thickness of the rotor or the inner vs outer diameter? My stock Talaria rotors are 2.3mm just like the Rippin Moto ones ... Great videos BTW!

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 10 měsíci +2

      **thickness, not sure why i wrote “wide” haha. Sting R’s brakes are soooo much better than the surrons it’s crazy. And thank you!

      Have you tried HO3C pads? I ran the H03As up front for a few months and preferred them over the stock pads. However, recently just switched to the Ho3c pads and like them a lot more.

    When your brakes lock your tires loose nearly all grip and you become less stable. This is why ABS exist. There is no reason to increase brake performance without increasing grip as you are just putting yourself at risk especially in emergencys where you will panic brake. If you want to reduce brake fade you want a thicker rotor or something that dissopates heat faster.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 11 měsíci +4

      correct - these are thicker and dissipate heat better, but they never lock up unexpectedly for me. I think it’s a good idea for anyone with a bike to practice emergency braking on different surfaces so they understand how the brakes react.

    • @johnbrown562
      @johnbrown562 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yea but if you have ever ridden a surron you'll know that your never locking your front tire up on pavement. I have sram code r's and these 250mm rotors and still haven't locked my front wheel on pavement. Even on dry dirt trails it is hard to lock up the front wheels

      @@johnbrown562 I do ride a surron. I rid one right into someone who cut me off while I was going 40. I don't know if my front locked up for sure but my rear did on good pavement.

    At some point the weight gets heavier if that matters to you and it will hit obsticles easier.
    Also the amount of pistons plays a large factor also.
    I run larger rotors on the front than the rear since your weight shifts to the front during braking and requires more stopping power than the rear. Just got the 220mm Maguras for my Grizzly :)

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 11 měsíci +2

      The meguras are sick! And true - those are all factors. I think they sell just the front kit of these, which is probably more than enough for most bikes. But for long & repeated wheelies, a huge rear rotor just helps me keep heat under control :)

    So quick question do you have to upgrade your calipers to fit the rotor thickness? Or can you run the stock calipers with a different pad to fit the rotor?

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I believe you can run stock calipers, but I'm not 100% sure because stock rotors are 1.8mm if i'm not mistaken. There might be a small amount of pad rub, so I'd just prepare for that possibility haha

  • @sagesends
    @sagesends Před 11 měsíci +1

    just a warning: ripping moto sells these in non-floating style for cheap... and they are dangerously unsafe. They warp badly when they get warm and push the pads back into the calipers, leading the lever to go to the bar next time you pull it. Me and others have had this issue, I was lucky enough to catch onto this early, but someone looped out and had a bad crash. Super unsafe, super sus. Im sure the floating rotors are fine though

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Před 11 měsíci +1

      oh no!! Rippin actually just emailed me last week that they removed the old style and are no longer selling it, so I guess that’s why. I had heard about slight warping with the old style (hence the new floating design + increased thickness) but didn’t know it was that bad - that’s awful. so far i’ve gotten no warping or issues with these, but i check all the grommets pretty frequently to make sure nothing is loosening up. I’m glad they’re no longer selling the non-floating version, I hope everyone’s doing okay who crashed - really scary.
