  • Figure Note:
Stop-Motion Transformation of MakeToys Green Giant. Fantastic set. Watch for the locking tabs. There are a number of spring-loaded locking tabs that you need to know about to assemble and disassemble the combiner.
Each shoulder has a small tab on the back (of the crane) that releases the mechanism
Each forearm has little buttons you squeeze to unlock them
Each knee has two tabs on the outside and inside that you squeeze to unlock them.
The mixer has two tabs that you squeeze to allow the ankle to extend and collapse
This thing hails from an era where 3rd party companies went after their own look. They were more toy-like and didn’t try to look like the G1 cartoon like everything does these days. I preferred this over the TFC version because it looked more like the original toy. (I picked GenerationToy [JinBao] over Toyworld for exactly the same reason)

Production Note: Each one is not very complicated, but doing all six in one go was a real chore. 1451 photos! Longest production ever. About 7.5 hours total. I’m not sure how I’m going to approach the MakeToys Computron and Defensor - might have to break them up into separate videos. Also - go on - ask me how I floated those six gun parts simultaneously. Maybe I’ll post an unedited picture if anyone notices.
    Viewing Note:
If you want to follow along, I recommend skipping to the speed run and using your , and . keyboard keys to advance by single frames. Every step of the transformation is documented in the frames of the video, in what I consider to be the best sequence. With minimal rubbing and minimal parts-parking.
Music: The music is by Ethan Meixsell - www.ethanmeixsell.com

1:20 - I love his head being left in place while his arms are transforming independently. It looks like the arms are the last step of the transformation, but something when wrong and he has to twist his head into shape by hand. lol

I try to find the cleanest way to transform a figure, where once I touch a subunit, I complete that subunit. And some choices can be arbitrary. I prefer to do the head last, when possible. In this case the arms have to move out of the way anyway so you might as well finish them. Positioning was off to show the hands, hence the camera move.

as ever, bonecrusher is my favorite, it happens everytime i see a new devastator set, bonecrusher is always near the top of the list of quality, the toyworld version in particular *Perfection*

As I was practicing this set, I also had decided that Bonecrusher had the best look to him. Best head sculpt and I like that it looks like he has swords.

Love to see creators take a look at older figures! Excellent video as usual. The gun assembly looks sick and the rotation in the middle caught me by surprise. I want to say you held it with sticks and animating putty since I can see where they were drawn over.
And I agree with you about early 3P putting its own spin on designs. I adore my Gravity Builder OSKO and can't wait for Moon Studio to start releasing theirs. Wish there was more imagination in sculpts these days, but money talks and I think we're in the minority. We might see a return to form here in the next decade once younger fans get tired of slavish accuracy to a show they didn't grow up with. Here's to hoping.

They are "helping hands" for soldering. They have a gooseneck and a magnetic base and jaws. used a steel plate as the base. The jaws are silver, so it was impractical to edit them completely out, so you can see evidence of them particularly. Will have to paint them matte black so they can hide better. I'm not interested in spending a lot of time editing out armatures. I'll post a picture in community.

To this day, this is my favorite version of Devastator! I mean, I love my Zeta one, as it's the current King of all representations of that robot, but the aesthetics of this one far eclipse any other for me personally.
I wish it were bigger though. Much bigger. IMHO, that's it's only flaw, and in comparison to the aforementioned Zeta Constructions, a fatal one from a size perspective.

The oversized JinBao version of Generation Toy's Devvy hits the same mark. I should shoot that set.

I personally prefer the IDW look for Devastator, and those two sets absolutely hit that mark.

This set I think looks better than the Menasor set. Kind of agree that Long Haul is the only real weak link in this set, but at least Devastator looks good.
As for the gun floating, I'mma do a stupid guess and say fishing wire. As a less stupid guess, probably a set of armatures, because of that one bump with the middle part.
